No Limewire for Some Macs...? Okay, for several months I've been checking for solutions to the dreaded MRJ problem... Even after all the many solutions and suggestions, apparently there are just SOME Macs that Limewire won't work with. That seems to be the dead end I'm at, and it's so frustrating. In the past I used Napster and Mactella, but now, since I can't get Limewire to run, I've got nothing. I'm jonesin' for new music. I'm hoping there's an alternative, or an answer, or a solution I haven't tried yet, but I'm pretty sure I've covered every single one of them I've read in the forums. Any help or suggestions will be GREATLY appreciated. |
Could you please tell us what sort of system you are running? That will help us help you. |
No Limewire/some Macs--system OS 9.1 Hi... Running OS 9.1 on my B&W G3. thanks |
Alright. First try dling the latest version of Limewire. Secondly, if that doesn't work, what exactly IS your problem? You say LW doesn't work? Does it not connect? Does it connect but doesn't return searches? Do searches not return successful downloads? |
No Limewire/Some Macs...continued saga As I said, I've tried every single suggestion posted in the forums. I can't install LW, no matter what version I download, or which site I download it from. The problem is the dreaded ""Unable to launch Java App. MRJ may not be installed correctly". I've re-installed Java, updated MRJ, downloaded every version of LW, from different sites, etc., etc. You name it, and I've been trying it for over a year. From what I've read, it seems like there are just some machines that are unable to use/work with Limewire, no matter what. I'm hoping that's NOT true, and I'm still willing to try new suggestions. Thanks SO much. |
Alright. Here's something that will probably work. I looked up on Mactracker (nice little program that), that your B+W G3 can support up to Mac OS X. You're running 9.1. I would suggest that you update to 9.2.2. It's free. Yes, it's a hassle, but if you really want to do this, I think that might do it. |
LW/Mac...Wary of 9.2 upgrade Thanks for taking the time to help me out, I do appreciate it. But....I'm very hesitant about the 9.2 upgrade. I've listened to many sad stories of the hassles it's caused. (i.e., application conflicts, etc). I'm a graphic designer, using all the standard desktop publishing programs (Quark, Illustrator, Photoshop, etc.). 9.1 has been fairly stable (knock wood), and you know what they say: "If it ain't broke, don't upgrade"---or something like that. If that's the only way you think LW will work, I'm not sure if I can risk it. Any thoughts? If I did, how difficult would it be to go back to 9.1 if I needed to? Did Mactracker have any other thoughts about this? ;-) I'll be waiting patiently here, chicken that I am. |
Mactracker says you can take the latest OS X release. I entirely sympathize with how you feel. I felt the same way when upgrading from 9.0 to 9.2. The only way to really look at this, is to go to the publisher of your software's website and check their compatability. Search Apple's forums and supports for known conflicts. If you're a graphic designer, ask other people in your industry what OS they use, and if they've encountered any problems upgrading. If you're really not feeling confident about it, you could install (not upgrade) 9.2 on a separate drive, so that worse case scenario, you simply switch back to your 9.1 drive. From my experience, when I had my ol' iMac DV SE 400, and updated from 9.1-9.2.2, I had no problems to speak of, but then, different situations entirely, of course, but it's nice to hear a happy ending :). |
9.2 upgrade I have done a 'survey' of what others are using, and most of them are on 9.1, like me. I don't have another drive to install it on. Is there any other way? Reverting back would probably not be a simple task, right? |
There's no other way while still keeping your current data. You can't partition your drives, because you only have one with stuff on it. No, it's not easy to revert, you have to install 9.1 again and then trash the 9.2 version. |
Dead end? No LW? So, we've reached an impasse here....the ONLY solution is to upgrade to 9.2? Give me something to hope for---will anything else work? And, I'm curious as to WHY it won't work on 9.1. There must be someone out there running the same system and LW, right? Lots of questions...any answers would be terrific. Thanks again. |
Well, first off, let's go in to what exactly your problem is? What is it exactly? Also, stief suggested to try to start up with extensions off. That means to hold down the shift key while you're starting up. This will turn off all of your extentions. If it works then, you have an extentsion conflict, and to use Limewire, you can simply use no extensions or a very basic set, and then switch back for your normal set to do your graphics stuff. |
Limewire problem--details Okay, this is what happens after I download the Limewire installer: After launching the Limewire installer, the screen with the clock graphic comes up for a few seconds, and then this error message: "Unable to launch Java application. MRJ may not be installed correctly". I have MRJ 2.2.5 installed. I have tried re-installing it. I've tried different versions of the Limewire installer, but I can't even get past this point to even install it. I tried starting up with extensions off, as suggested, and the same thing happened. Thanks in advance... |
Alrighty then... Let's try history. Did Limewire ever work? If so, can you remember what changed on your computer from when it did work, to when it didn't work? |
No Limewire...ever. No, I've never been able to get Limewire to work. Never even made it past the installer. (For over a year, I've been reading through the forums about this problem, and it always dead ends, with no solution...just that "Limewire won't work on some machines.") Waiting on a miracle... |
Salut Jottagirl, so you've passed all the troubleshooting tests without results. If I would really want to run LW with a problem that relies on an OS intallation (this is obviously the case, it happens with every OS in a few cases), personnally I would reinstall OS 9.1. This is the natural solution. Sorry, but the masters at catching os 9 bugs are gone to greener woods.... (os x). I would back up everything, format the HD, make two partitions this time (much safer to keep a computer functionnal) and I would reinstall it. Then you'll be happy and ready to share with the gnutella community:) If you are not ready to enter this process, I'll understand you as data loss may occur with people lacking computing skills (this is really a potential benefits vs potential losses case). Sorry I can't help you any further. Bonne chance. |
Re-install existing OS 9.1? So, I should re-install my *existing* system 9.1 software, and then try installing Limewire? Does this mean there's something corrupt within the system, or a conflict? And, re-installing would fix this? I just want to make sure I understand what I'm doing BEFORE doing it. Here's a thought...is there any other way to get the LW application OTHER than the downloads that need to be unstuffed, and then installed? Does it exist in any other way, any other place? Maybe that's not the issue at all, but it does seem like the installer is the problem. Is that an obvious observation? <g> |
NO you shouldn't reinstall os 9.1 on top of your existing 9.1. As you said, on mac os classic it singnifies great chances of data corruption. If you really want to have a working LW you'll have to format your hd with a prior backup as described in my previous post. Bonne chance. |
Partitioning HD Sorry, I mis-read your earlier post--missed the part about partitioning the drive. This is something I've never had to do, although I realize it's not that big a deal. I've got 4 GB space on my hard drive, which should be enough, right? What are the pros/cons of giving this a try? |
Partitionning is not that easy. You have to format ALL your hard disk so it doesn't matter how much space left there is. This is what I recommend to you: find a kind mac user with backup, reformat and partitionning knowledge and ask him to help you to enter this procedure. Of course you could always do some googling to get that knowledge and do it yourself.... If you feel that extra work doesn't worth it, I recommend you to not do it as it seems to be your work machine (work may be more important than hobbying sometimes....) ;) Bonne chance |
Partitioning I probably could do it with a little instruction, but as you said, it IS my work machine, and the risk may be too high. Which puts me right back where I started--no Limewire for my Mac. Is this the end? <g> |
Is it the end? No! I am sure that you want a lovely eMac for your personnal use at your home.... There you'll be able to run LW and do what you want without having a risk to make your boss angry;) C'est la vie! |
The boss... I'm a freelance designer...I *am* the boss....makes it very hard to sneak around my OWN back. I'm not thrilled with the ending to this long saga. I don't see a new machine in my future for a long, long, time, due to financial troubles. In the meantime, I really miss the music. :-( If any other ideas pop into your head, or anyone elses, PLEASE let me know. Thanks much. |

I'm not sure if this qualifies as another "idea" but although I have a Mac much older than yours, I too am using OS 9.1 and I'm stuck with it until I get a new Mac...(not to be soon). I'm also not an expert but I occassionally do tackle the clean install method to clean up accumulated bugs in the OS...Do you have Conflict Catcher 8 with the downloadable upgrades (8.0.6 and 8.0.8)? Nice thing about CC they send you a BOOK. The manual includes a very(?) easy to understand step-by-step process for the "clean install" operation.; far better for me to have a book than trying to access any onscreen help when I'm doing this stuff. I've been using LimeWire since 1.6 and although the "improvements" are slowly leaving me in the dust (taxing this old Performa and the dreaded MJR, my most up-to-date version LW 3.6.10 did install and works fairly well. By the way I NEVER remove a previous version of LW that is working until I have had a chance to use the newer version...I still have LW 1.7, 2.7.13 Pro, 3.4.7 Pro and 3.6.10 Pro installed and use each of them every once and a while (I find that LW 2.7.13 gives be the least number of "crashes" per session. As the old LW 1.7 installed the best MJR I can use, I ALWAYS use the LW version Mac download which does not include another copy of MJR. Good Luck |
|
Good ideas! I totally go with the CarbonLib bit especially. |
Hi Guys: I'm a peer-to-peer newbie, but an old hand at Mac's. I doubt that CarbonLib would be the culprit, would it? Limewire is supposed to be developed in Java (TM) -- that means it 's platform independent, and should -- theoretically -- run on ANY Java platform. Have you installed the SDK? Or not. B. |
good to have an old mac expert around. Most of us are on 10.2 and up, and our experience with 9 is getting dated quickly. As this thread shows, we are really trying to come up with anything that jottagirl could do without a clean OS install. |
No expert here, steif. Just someone who got hooked on Macintosh, with my trusty +. I haven't gotten up to anything beyond the Classic OS yet, and am stuck on this BZ thing. As to Jottagirl's problem (with her work machine), the first problem is why would she want a JAva daemon (presumably) inside her firewall on LocalTalk? IMHO, she needs a DEDICATED audiophile machine. A G4 cube might be one suggestion. B. |
Oops, that should be ZG NOT BZ. B. |
Update... Sorry I haven't posted this update sooner. Thanks to ALL who have offered solutions. Here's where I'm at: 1) Re-installed Carbonlib with no results 2) Tried running Conflict Catcher, but got SO bogged down & confused by it, I gave up. (Now I remember why I never use it) Any suggestions on how to narrow down the testing would be appreciated. 3) Love those suggestions about a new computer, and donations will be happily accepted. Until then...not. <g> 4) Just a reminder...I haven't even been able to INSTALL Limewire, much less getting to the point of increasing memory, etc. And yes, I have tried increasing memory of the installer. So...right back at ya, boys....still waiting for a miracle. |
Have you tried disabling virtual memory whe you install? Or enabling it if you have it diabled? (enable to 1 MB above real RAM) |
Tried that latest suggestion about disabling virtual memory, with no luck. Banging my head against the wall, with no music.... |
Salut, here's a suggestion: install virtual pc on your computer and install windows 98, then you'll be able to install a P2P that will run slowly but you'll get music without messing too much with your computer. Bonne chance |
<<install virtual pc on your computer and install windows 98,>> Hmm...that sounds like more work than it's worth. Buying the software is the first problem, I guess. *sigh* |
Sorry if I didn't see you had tried this (just another long shot), but have you tried installing with all extensions turned off by holding down the shift key on a restart? I'm wondering if something like Ram Doubler or Adobe TYpe Manager might be involved. I guess I just can't see how LW can run on an old OS 8.6 machine but not on yours, unless there is some unusual 3rd party stuff installed. |
I did try restarting w/extensions off. No luck. I do have ATM, but not RamDoubler. Also, not running any *unusual* third-party stuff, that I can think of. *double* sigh.... A thought, and maybe a stupid question: Since the problem is with the installer (I haven't even gotten past that yet), is there any other way to get it installed? |
Hmm...that's not my department. Let's try this. What third-party software (anything that's not apple) do you use? Unusual, or not? |
Here's a list of software: Quark, Adobe Photoshop & Illustrator, Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, ATM, America Online, Netscape, Internet Explorer, JamCam, Acrobat, Stuffit, Fetch, Verizon DSL software, Adaptec Toast, Portfolio Browser, Norton Utilities, Mpegger Drop Decoder. |
IMHO, the easiest and most risk free (ref: your graphics work) way to have the best of both worlds is to put another HD into that ole' B&W. A good HD with ample space can be had for 60<$>80 brand new. The install of an additional HD in your G3 is a very simple procedure that would require no specialty tools or complex procedural issues. Actually, having more than 1 HD is a good idea, especially if you are running a business. One HD (with all the data) remains as it is with no changes, i.e., formatting,OS, the other HD, you can format any way you want and install an upgraded OS. If you are gunshy of OS9.2.2, I would recommend OS9.2.1. I too, am a dedicated Classic user and will be for a long time. I use 9.2.1 on my PM8600/300 Mach5 and have used it with LW Pro for a year or so with no problems. The occasional java quirk is minimal and the quirks have been becoming more infrequent with new LW Pro releases. As an additional item to think about, look at your OS and make sure you have all your updates. I'm not just talking the specific 9.1 updates. Remember to have all updates, i.e., OT, MRJ, TCP/IP, etc, etc. Many of those updates are non-OS specific. That means you can run with internet big dogs and still have years enriched Macs with Classic systems. I run the same OS on all of my classic Macs (7600/200 is the oldest) and don't experience any problems with LW Pro. Hope this helps, good luck. :) |
SUCCESS!! 1 Attachment(s) Gather 'round to hear the miracle...I have successfully installed Limewire. I was continuing my search for the solution to the MRJ/Installer problem, and found a website with info about MRJ installation--where all the components should be. Now, I've re-installed MRJ several times, but when I checked the system folder, I noticed components missing, or misplaced. No idea how, or why that happened. I followed the instructions, and voila! The LW installer finally worked. So, for anyone interested, here's the site: http://www.stsci.edu/webet/MacSetup.html I've also attached a jpg screen capture of the info from the site. I'll do my best to pass this info on, (and post it in some forums) to anyone having the same conflict/problem. Thanks so much to all who helped, offered suggestions, and stuck with it for so long. It's much appreciated. |
Great! MRJ, huh! Which were the missing components? |
Ahhh. The joy of success. Congratulations, and I hope you enjoy Limewire most thoroughtly! |
The components weren't actually missing, they were in the wrong folder. I have no idea why, or how. |
To all involved with the Saga of Jottagirl: Wow! Thank you for hours of interesting reading. Kinda like a soap opera (but without the marital infidelity and evil twin). What a saga. Just reading about it has exhausted me - I think that sushi and beer are in order to celebrate your journey and success. Nice job boys & girls! |
>>(but without the marital infidelity and evil twin)<< Oh, but there WAS...you missed a great chapter. <g> At least this story entertained *someone*. |
Oh yeh, just call us the 'jones busters.' She got a m-r-j jones, boom-chaka-chaka-boom, she "had" a m-r-j jones, backa, backa boom. ;) Good job on the fix young lady. :) |
ahem....not exactly a "young" lady, but thanks, sonny! But I *feel* pretty childish. <g> |
Hmm, Sonny? I thought dirt and I shared a common birthday. Why thank you for the compliment. Now where did I put that invite to meet Adam, it was just..............;) |
Hey, I *knew* dirt....dirt was a friend of mine. And, Sir, you're not as *nearly* as old as dirt. And take it from me, Adam & Eve's parties aren't as exciting as they sound. You know the kind of snakes that hang out at the Garden of Eden mansion...it always turns into a reptilian free-for-all. Bobbing for apples is the highlight of the evening. |
