Default Clear Inactive deletes completed downloads?

I'm using LW 3.8.5 on Mac OS X and, while I was on the search page i hit the "clear inactive" button. Instead of clearing the files which failed to download, I lost all the files that I had downloaded today. They aren't in my library nor in iTunes, they just disappeared. Where did they go? the info on website was redundant with no clue as to what constitutes an inactive search item or whereit might be cleared to.
