Here's my problem- Only the quictime icons in the shared folder work. The blank icons just bring up the limewire program. I think the problem is that limewire is only set to play quictime and not the other music players, but I don't know how to change this. Thanks for the help!

Files depicted as blank sheets just indicate that there is no default application set to play them. In that case, you have to set the application yourself by Ctrl-clicking the file in the Finder, clicking Get Info and setting the Open with with whatever application can open the files you want.
Also, there are posts in these formus saying something about files being depicted as blank sheets because their file names are too long (and, as a possible consequence, the file extension is truncated).

I've been having the same problem of late. For a long time all my
music downloads appeared as QuickTime files. Recently most have appeared as blank "limewire documents," and cannot be opened by any app I know of. Maybe one in twenty works now. Is there a setting that can be changed? This problem came out of nowhere--before all worked fine. Hoping, Lcbiades w/old Mac, old OS Last edited by lcbiades; June 12th, 2004 at 07:44 PM. |

You should be able to change the settings for .mp3 files in Control Panesl>File Exchange.
This problem can also be resolved with a little program called Snitch. It's shareware for $20 and the best money I ever spent. I have all of my music files set to download as Quicktime Files so I can test them with Quicktime before adding them to ITunes. I then use Snitch to change them. Insofar as those music files with long names, I shorten them so I can add the .mp3 extension and then expand the names in ITunes. Just highlight the song and "Get Info." There's more than one way to skin act but this works for me. |

No luck so far--I played with file transfer and pc exchange, but
nothing doing. I'll keep trying. Thanks for the help--any more ideas would be appreciated. Thanks again |

May not be the place for this topic but I've always wondered how "file helpers" in IE5 Preferences relates to the Internet Control panel and also "File Exchange" in the Control Panels.
