Default Really, really slow -- please help

Prior to some arbitrary moment in time, my LW Pro 4.0.2 was sailing along. Now, it is EXCRUTIATINGLY slow. Commands are executed a minute later, if at all. Pull down menus are so painful to use that they're almost useless. I've tried allocating much more memory for the application, cutting uploads way down. I don't believe it's my Java. I'm on a Mac G3, OS 9.2 with a cable modem. Should have plenty of horsepower to run the program. If this is the way it has to be, then fine, but if there is something I can do to regain the speed I first had when I purchased LW Pro, I'd be grateful to know what it is.

sounds like the virtual memory and hard drive are filling up.

Does a two minute shutdown and restart help?

Oh, and there's a slightly changed LW for Classic just released--4.0.9 http://www.limewire.com/english/cont...loadfree.shtml

Thanks! Shutting down and restarting does give me a tiny bit of extra speed right at first. Then, it quickly bogs down to a hopeless crawl. Whever I start LW up, I keep getting a message about a newer version of Pro, but when I tried to download it, all I got was what I already had; 4.0.2. Come to think of it, it was about the time I started getting that invitation to download the new Pro that my LW speed went down the tubes. Yes, I can still download files, it's just a painful experience rather than the joy it once was. Like rowing a boat in a sea of tar. Wah, wah, poor me.

Did you install the Pro? It should have been the 4.0.9 (at least it was yesterday when I tried).

btw--a few more ideas.

perhaps cleaning out the incomplete folder can help if there are too many old ones hogging the background processes.

Also, (and I hate to suggest this), sharing fewer files will be speedier.

Large new files take a loooong time to hash in Classic: is this what is taking so much time?

I downloaded it by the numbers, but it was the same iteration I already had. (It says something about "frozen for Classic" at the site.) I do have a fair number of shared files, but not really that many. Here's the kicker: when I first upgraded to Pro 4.0.2, I experienced an incredible increase in speed. I was amazed by it. That lasted for at least three months. My point being, with the system I have Pro once worked blindingly fast, then for some reason three months later slowed to an almost imperceptible crawl where it has remained.

I'm still puzzled by the Pro problem (see http://www.gnutellaforums.com/showth...threadid=33991 ), but oh well.

So much can change in three months it's hard to pinpoint a cause.

You can revert and try a clean install (just drag the following somewhere else)
-System Folder/Preferences/.limewire folder
-System Folder/Preferences/Incomplete and Shared folders ( or wherever you have located them)
-Applicatiions/LimeWire folder
-any installers

Download the new installer from your Pro page (maybe clear IE's cache first) and it should give you a fresh start as before.

Really though, to continue p2p filesharing, OS X is the way to go. Apple has given up on java for Classic, and so much continues to advance that even LW had to give up on trying to make LW work on the old Java.

You could always try Cabos, it is still LW 4.0.8 core with another GUI, but you never know.

Cabos: http://cabos.sourceforge.jp/

os 9 really sucks for file-sharing..

Bonne chance

Merci! I will be going to a G5 with OSX as soon as my wallet will allow -- very soon, I hope. Meanwhile, I'll try the link you sent. Thanks again!
