Mac OS 10.3.9 update breaks limewire? Just installed the Mac OS 10.3.9 update. Limewire now will not start up. I went and downloaded the most current version of limewire, did a fresh install of it. And still, limewire will not start up. Anyone know of this, anyone else have the same problem? Any fixes? Thanks. |
Yes--it has been noted on a number of forums. Looks like the easy fix, credited to kc8apf http://forums.macrumors.com/showthre...61#post1389161 , is to reinstall the second last security update--the one with all the java parts http://www.apple.com/support/downloa...34orlater.html If the security update won't install, just move the SecUpd2005-002Pan.pkg receipt out of the hard drive /Library/Receipts folder and try again. |
Dear Stief, It worked!! Thank you so much. What a great forum. Tim |
Limewire OS10.3.9 fix Yes, thanks very much! I would've never figured this out if it hadn't been for the forum. |
Thanks, stief Many thanks for your help. Excellent forum. |
Ooops--don't credit the messenger ;) but also good to see that the OS X crowd does show some appreciation. Hope Apple listens to the forums and mailing lists and quits breaking java. The real credit for getting word out about the fix goes to et voilą, the Appleforums, and above all "kc8afp" from macrumors who had the message out much earlier. Quote:
For the record, Apple has officially noted the use of the security update as a fix http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301380 cheers all--hope the sharing is going well. |
Hi. I'm the poster who started this thread. I'd like to thank y'all very much for the help. Very appreciated! And I had noticed a bunch of other Java related problems even after I'd started this thread... so I'm thrilled for the fix. As per the instructions, went and got SecUpd2005-002Pan.dmg from the apple site and installed it. No problem with install, and I did *not* have to go get the abovementioned reciept out of the library and remove it. Very simple. Just ran the 002 installer. All the Java problems dissapeared. Cool. Good fix. Thank you! |
OS X Limewire stopped working Limewire has suddenly stopped working! I have reinstalled, removed preferences and even paid $18.00 for new download and still no luck. I am a great fan of limewire so really not happy. Please help. |

I'm glad this solution in this thread worked for so many, but as for myself, I've had no success so far with the reinstallation of the said security updates SecUpd2005-002Pan.dmg or JavaUpdateMacOSXv10.3.9.dmg. I've done all the trash preference things. I'll keep trying of course in case I did something strange along the way but at this point for the record, LimeWire still just won't boot in 10.3.9 for me. Right now it hangs at "Loading HTML Engine..." stage. Sometimes it doesn't even get that far. Reinstalled LimeWire several times etc. etc..... |
did you repaired permissions of your harddisk in disk utility? (you should with every update). Ciao |
Yes I did a disk permissions repair and I just did another one - still no LimeWire. Now also Noton Antivirus will no longer update but gives me an error message (I will contact them today) . I'm at a loss. I may have to reinstall the entire OS. Ironic this happening with the 10.3.9 update only weeks before the release of Tiger. I was perfectly happy with 10.3.8 and had ZERO problems! I just noticed that some files in the Java142Update2 have older creation dates and sometimes different byte amounts than the ones installed on the HD. Should the installed files be replaced by the older ones? |
I replaced some files keeping the replaced files in a folder on the desktop for safe-keeping. I also ran a virus scan and found a few! So.........EVERYTHINGS WORKING NOW! I thank you. :) |
Hey Reesho I've got the same prob. Done the update to 10.3.9, done the java and security updates... still quits at "loading html". Aaarrrrgggghhhh... I can't cope without Limewire. Tis driving me nuts. There's got to be something else to try. I also have done permissions, just a matter of course really. |
Unfortunately since it's been awhile now I no longer have the folder with the files in it that I replaced so I can't tell you exactly what they were. I'm not even sure if it was that that helped. I did run a virus scan as I said and found a few. I was doing a lot of brain surgery in the system files and replacing outdated or inconsistently dated files. There's gotta be a well know fix for this though. If I remember something else I'll post back. Good Luck. |
I am running Tiger 10.4.1, and Limewire will not start up, I have installed the newest java, which is Java 2 SE 5.0 Release 1, please help !! |
None of these fixes works for me - Help I have done all this @$%*( and still Limewire crashes on startup, just as described. I ran the 10.3.9 Java installer, ran the old security update, checked my permisssions. Nothing still crashes at statup why? |
i am having the same problem as reesho. i followed the steps suggested in this forum and still my limewire will not move passed the HTML engine...stage. i also followed the java updated suggested by apple.com which too was to no avail. as a note, i only use Limewire basic(free version) and was wondering if anyone has overcome the 10.3.9 problem without the use of Limewire Pro? |
similar probs I've followed the instructions for the workaround, but I can't resolve this issue either. Attempting to replace the update is blocked as I get an error message stating that the Java doesn't need to be replaced on this machine. Deleting the existing file doesn't help either. Can anyone advise about a manual workaround where we can remove the updates and then reinstall? |
Try this: Double-click the harddrive icon, open the Library, open the Receipts folder, then find the file: Java142Update2, delete it and try again. http://www.apple.com/downloads/macos...update142.html or you could apply it to the JavaSecurityUpdate4 & reinstall that one. I'd try the other 1st. Receipts folder sample image |
Oddly, there was no existing Java142Update2 in the Recepits folder. Even so, I get the same error. JavaSecurityUpdate4 would allow itself to be installed. However, Limewire still refuses to start up. |
Other than the radical of reinstalling OS, lol :D You could try a couple of other things. 1. Delete the LW Preference file found here: /Users/your_username/Library/Preferences/LimeWire 2. Set up a new user account & log into it, & see if LW will launch from there. At least that should show whether it's the Java or not that's the issue. After all, the problem only surfaced after the update right? 3. I guess you could try this version HERE to see if it makes any difference. (Probably won't!) |

Anyone can help ? Gil |
I haven't attempted the fix using the terminal. What I might suggest is re-installing Java using the "Offline" standalone Java installer. There's a choice of a few. The one the article suggested is this one: http://www.apple.com/support/downloa...acosx1039.html However, I've found most people seem to get it fixed using this one: http://www.apple.com/downloads/macos...update142.html If it doesn't allow you to install it, then remove the java142.pkg from the Receipts folder. You'll find it here Receipts folder sample image |
SecUpd2005-002Pan.dmg won't install From all the great responses, I thought this would work perfectly. My problem is the same as everyone else, crashing LW. I followed all the suggestion, and each time I rty to install SecUpd2005-002Pan.dmg, it won't let me. It tells me I can't install on this colume because it does not contain a version of Java Web Start that needs updating. Is there something else that I can try? Thanks for any help. |

Lord of the Rings: Thank you for your help. But nothing has worked for me, and it was too much. I bought and installed Tiger, and everything seems to be working fine now. It was either that, or become bald. Again, thank you. |
I also haven't paid for an new subscription to Norton. I don't really care about the virus updates since they're all for windows. Glad to hear you solved your issue anyway! ;) |
I've done all the advice on this thread, but still cannot get Limewire basic to startup. I've got a bobbing icon, which then stops..and nothing. I've tried installing Java and security updates recommended but it would not let me as I don't have a version which needs updating apparently. Can anyone help? Please. Thanks |
I'm with you Scruffian. I followed all these links and directions and still just a bobbing icon that stops bobbing after 5 seconds. Nothing. Anyone else got a bright idea? Does installing Tiger fix it???:( |

Yes, it does !! But some other apps won't like it : next I had to Install a new version of OpenOffice and still have trouble with EyeTV... Gil |
osx bouncing icon no limewire A lot of people seem to be having this problem. (e mac osx 10.3.9) date is 21st Jan 2006. Limewire was working 3 days ago now it's not. I guess some updates have come down the line from apple and wiped out java again! this has happened to me 3 times now, each time fixed by upgrading to the latest java, installing it alone then repairing permissions etc. I dont know now which java I should be trying to download to fix this issue for panther? On the apple forum there is a post that states the QT 7.0.4 upgrade breaks java applications, could the most recent QT upgrade have done the same, and how could I resort to an older QT application. Help I just cant seem to fix this. |
Is there a QT conflict This questioned is aimed at The Lord Of The Rings? Same old problem, Apple upgrades then Limewire crashes! At todays date 21st Jan 2006, what is the most up to date Java for osx 10.3.9 ? Do you know about the QT upgrade that breaks Java apps' ? How can I try and fix this. You have fixed my problems in the past i am sure you can do it now! Regards A |
Ouch. No easy solution yet; this problem looks like an issue for a new thread. Developers of other java apps are noting a new conflict with the QuickTime 7.0.4 Update and 10.3.9, and the solutions to the previous problem don't work this time. I haven't found a link to a practical fix so far. Quicktime 7.0.4 kills Java application Here's the link to an uninstaller Quicktime 701 Reinstaller for Quicktime 7.0.4 |
On the Final Cut Pro forum, the attitude is always a wait & see approach, re: updating QuickTime. Better to wait & see whether it's safe to update. It's not uncommon for updates of QT to have some kind of bug. |
This QT upgrade appears to be the problem! I have just returned to QT 7.01 from 7.04 and lo and behold my limewire is back! Now seems to be working fine, these Apple upgrades should come with a health warning! How are novice users meant to know the implications of these upgrades? Thanks for the info. A |

What a relief! Will future updates cause this problem as well? |
:) :) :) I am also back in business after doing the QT 7.01. reinstall!! I now swear to stay 3 mths behind in updates!! |
Glad to hear this is getting things moving again. Apple inform me that I must have QT 7.05 to allow our i pods to function properly. Is this really true? If I download 7.05 i guess limewire will dissapear! What do we all do? A |
Tell Apple to fix their java and their Quality Assurance testing. I gather the update adds new "funtionality" to the IPods, so your iPod will still work, but without whatever new 'goodies' they wanted to sell you. This article suggests that the automatic Software update no longer installs the bad version. http://java.ittoolbox.com/news/display.asp?i=137816&t=7 |
I have the same problem with Limewire on my G5 (with 10.3.9 - I have not yet tried it on my ibook with 10.4.2). I tried to do what the others here have done but it would not let me reinstall the java update. When I looked in my LIbrery/Receipts folder, the only thing there is something for the adobe reader, nothing about the security update. Followin another link on this forum I followed Apple's support page re admitted problems with Limewire. However, when I went into Terminal and types jave - version, I did not receive the 'Segmentation Fault' message. It just told me my version. Not quite sure what to do now. Any other suggestions? |
Take a look at Receipts folder sample image & you'll see a few Java versions. One is the security update (oh I just realised the JavaSecurityUpdate4.pkg doesn't show in that example.) However, I've found a lot of people have been able to solve the issue by re-installing Java 1.42_update2. If you choose that one, then that's the one you'd need to remove from the receipts folder; ie: Java1.42_Update2.pkg Get that installer here http://www.apple.com/downloads/macos...update142.html The Java 1.42 for Tiger is a different install. AFAIK it's still this one (if you're having similar problems): Java 1.4.2 for Tiger (click on link) But if you have Tiger, you might be just as well off getting Java 1.5 (however you'd need to follow the suggestions in the following link to force LW to use it ... it won't use it unless you use java utility to tell it to): http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301073 There should be some small improvements by allowing LW to use Java 1.5 |
also try reverting the Quicktime http://www.apple.com/support/downloa...cktime704.html |
I just downloaded some songs on mu Mac G5OSX, on Limewire basic, and even though they are in my Limewire Library, they do not update on my I pod...has Apple Blocked this? I have a lot of songs on my I pod from previous downloads...it seems they are no longer automatically going into the I tunes program in my Limewire Folder,....Help. I want to hear and play my stuff with my i pod! |
I've been having no problems with the newest iTunes or LW versions in regards to music transfering. The LW playlist within iTunes should be igored. It cannot be copied or burned. You need to use the other techniques for transfering music to iTunes. It's discussed here How to transfer music to my iPod (& iTunes) for mac users |
lw isnt running on mac osx 10.3.9 hello i just downloaded limewire 4.10.9 onto my mac osx 10.3.9 and have done everything the help area has told me but still i am get the message that the application limewire has unexpectedly quit. the system and other applications have not been affected. would you to submit a bug report to apple? now I went to the limewire site and read about the issues that osx 10.3.9 has with this program and went to the links and downloaded the upgrade for the java and still nothing can someone help me with this matter? |
hi... do i remove the receipt from the receipts folder before i re-install the java update? |
You should only remove the java1.4.2update2.pkg file if the system disallows you from installing the 1.4.2 java. If this is the case it will either say, already installed no update necessary or give a null error. Only in that case do you remove the receipt file which can be found in the OSX HDD -> Library -> Receipts folder. Receipts folder sample image. The system requires the receipts files so normally these files should never be touched. |
