iTunes burned from CDs can't be shared by Limewire (OS X.4)

I can't figure out what's going on and the help desk at Limewire Pro doesn't answer my questions. We recently loaded a bunch of songs into iTunes off CD. Limewire is set to share iTunes library. iTunes is set to "share music". "Sharing" in Mac System Preferences is set with the firewall "off" and the box clicked to share "iTunes".

It's weird. It almost seems like anything we download from Limewire goes into iTunes, but anything that originates from iTunes (a CD being uploaded into mp3 format) does not get shared. Yet Limewire preferences lists iTunes/iTunes music as THE file that is shared.

I have ALSO tried copying the albums uploaded into iTunes (as mp3s) into my "shared" folder, and then listing the "shared" folder (users/(my name)/shared) as another shared folder in Limewire.

But none of these songs are being shared!

Is it possible that when you load a cd into iTunes (6.0), that apple has made the mp3 encoding UNshare-able???

Just wondering, because all I'm tryin' to do is give back, baby!

Thanks in advance for any help. -- 4trogan

What makes you think the files aren't being shared? Do you mean shared between computers using iTunes on your own network or within LW on the gnutella network. Have a look at the songs in the LW Library window & look to the right of them under the Hits column. Do you see any getting hits?

I added more songs to my iTunes library last night from CD & for this case, added those 2 albums to share for LW. They're listed in LW ok.

Lord, you may want to view the thread "Sharing music ripped with iTunes broken?" in the OS X forum, as what this guy is talking about is exactly what is happening to me. IOW, Limewire says they are being shared, but they are NOT being shared. I get hits, but no one downloads the files from me. So I guess I am talking about sharing within the LW network, not my home network. (Probably shoulda stipulated that first, sorry)

The very same files that LW says are there in LW prefs, are NOT there when I check from other people's computers. The only way these files are seen is when I use another computer in my house on our wireless network, and then of course LW signals this as putting the file in all blue stars. Otherwise these songs are invisible to everyone.

Could you create a magnet link for one of them & send it to me via personal message & I'll see if I can downld it & browse you. But don't post the link here. To send me a pm, click on my username & choose send personal message. To create a magnet link, see How to use Magnet Links & Direct Connect

When you say you can't find it from other computers, are you sure you can find your computer? Also, do you see a brick wall in front of the blue world icon at the bottom of LW's interface?

Before I do the magnet thing (which I admit - I don't know what that is!)...

I have to tell you there IS a brick wall in from of the blue world icon!! What is going on!?? (now I'm feeling really dumb... I thought for sure my firewall was off/open for limewire)

thanks

The problem could either be your OSX firewall or your modem/router's internal NAT firewall. For OSX firewall see OSX Firewall settings for Tiger
For your modem/router, it depends on brand & model. Check to make sure UPnP is enabled. See Connection problems? Check here first! (click on link)

Personally I often have my OSX firewall disabled. Only occasionally turn it on.

Yep, using an airport. Bet that's the problem. Will check out what you told me about -- thanks so much.

Lord of the Rings June 19th, 2006 11:59 PM

There is a link there for the airport but here's a direct link: Apple Airport Extreme/Express for Mac users[/url] * (NAT-PMP)
You would need to restart LW after such changes.

Lord, I just did what the article asked, and it did NOT work. Firewall (brick wall) is still showing in Limewire, even after restart. I just can't think of where this firewall might be coming from.

Could it be the ADSL modem itself?
Is it possible I am overlooking something obvious?
Were you able to browse me with the magnet link I PM'd you?
