Yeah, Pat, that chat function is a bit of a joke. I see several queries like your's, and no-one ever has the answer. Mine's never worked either, smiley face or not. Might work on PCs ?

Hello!
The chat function do work.It is not less stable for the Macintosh version of LimeWire.I have tried it on a PC and the success rate is the same for both. The reasons you cannot chat with everybody that have the happy face symbol can be these: 1.Out of Bandwith to initiate a connection due to too many people downloading from him/her. 2.He/She has disabled chat in LimeWire but in the search result field that persons file will still have a happy face symbol due to the fact that every person that are using LimeWire 1.8X are potentionally chattable and will be listed with a happy face. Why do some people turn it off?.Well I initially thought of doing so myself because I was affraid of getting framed by some company or agency who migh be obtaining some evidence that it is Acctually me who is sharing the files and not someone else.So when using that function be very carefull to what questions you are beeing asked.Never respond to a question like this "What is your name?",I just downloade this and that file what else do you have to offer?" etc.It could be the RIAA! And also some people just find it annoying and have turned it off for that reason. My own experience is that about 1 out of 4 happy face results is actually chattable.

Good thinking, Joakim! Running out of bandwidth is especially possible if the host is on a phone modem. In my case, however, the chat box opens, but doesn't want to do anything. No cursor, can't type. If you click on 'send message' there's a "you:" at the top, but that box is otherwise DOA.
I even received a chat attempt once, and I still couldn't reply. It said "hi,who are you?" -kcome to think of it, you're right, it was probably the RIAA, the *******s. Speaking of RIAA, anybody know any good (and free) Mac alternatives to Limewire? Soulfilet P.S.: Who are you, what have you downloaded and what's your ss#? |
