Running LimeWire on Vista

I just installed LimeWire Pro 4.13.0 on Windows Vista Ultimate x64. I first tried installing by just clicking on the installer and it hung on installing Java.

I then went to the Java site and downloaded Java 6 x64 version and again tried installing LimeWire once again the LimeWire installer tried to install Java and hung.

I then went back to the Java site and installed Java 6 JRE (32 bit) using the offline installer. I then tried installing LimeWire it installed without any Problems.

When I started LimeWire it showed a firewall in front of the globe and only connected to 2 host. I then checked the windows firewall and made sure it was allowed in the exceptions which it was.

I then configured my router for both port forwarding and upnp forwarding the globe disappeared and I got a turbo connection. I then did a search for a large file and started Downloading a file 200 MB file within 2 minutes I had 10 connections and I am currently downloading the file at 150 KB/s 50% done in 7 minutes so LimeWire works fine with Vista. :xirokrotima:

You can get Java 6 at the link below.

I jsut got a new computer yesterday and DL limewire just fine. Problem is that when I open limewire, it states that it's waiting for a connection and that I may be behind a firewall. Fine, I've tried to clear that issue up in McAfee by having it recognize the port and make an exception for limewire.

Also - it kills my internet connection when it's open so that I can't surf the web. Any clues how to fix this?

Grandpa March 2nd, 2007 12:50 PM

If you want to use LimeWire you will need to uninstall McAfee or try the fixes for McAfee in the link below.

Thanks chepartner. I'll give 'er a try tonight when I get home. Hoefully this will resolve the issue.

Does this mean though, that I won't have a firewall? Are there any security concerns there?

Thanks!

Grandpa March 2nd, 2007 04:40 PM

You can use the Vista Firewall. I have not looked to see if Zone Alarm has a Vista compatible firewall or not. But if they do they have a very good product and it is free.

Hiya, Im from the uk, I have no mcafrees or any other firewall apart from windows one on my system. I downloaded the new beta version of limewire.. It all works fine and and installed fine. But the only problem is, is the download speed is so slow. The globe on limewire has a firewall infront of it but i have told windows firewall to allow limewire.

I have homehub router/modem. You suggested to allow your router to allow limewire. But i dont know how to do this..

I also have new java installed so is not that either..

My harddrive also goes mad with buzzing noices everytime i download a song from limewire as if its working in overdrive, Even though its brandnew pc and only a day old.

Could someone tell me step by step how to config my router and firewall.

Thankyou

yacozwho March 3rd, 2007 03:26 PM

And zonealarm have not updated there software yet to run on vista.

Limewire and McAfee

I too have had heaps of problems installing Limewire over the last week. My OS is Vista Premium and I assumed that it was a conflict between Limewire and Vista. I have read many comments in many forums and tried numerous things.

I contacted McAfee and they advised me to uninstall the spam killer and privacy service, which I did, and then I downloaded limewire again (and it actually worked from the online installer!) limewire is now working fine.

HELP

can sumone help me with more detail on how to download limewire to vista....cause i tired with whts up to and went to differernt threads and i just need more details of wht to download from java site and how to do sum of this stuff..thanks

princess318,

The current version of LW works with Vista. The problem most people are having is is that LW won't work with Mcafee on Vista. So if you have McAfee installed on your pc, you'll need to uninstall it for LW to work. Replace it with AVG free Or try what LeeLee80 did:

Then d/load and install Java 6, the one called (Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6u1) using the offline installer http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp

BrandonL April 12th, 2007 02:21 PM

I'd love to do what LeeLee80 did, but when I open Add/Remove only McAfee security center shows up. So, then I try to see what's in Securtiy Center by opening up the program and it shows I have Personal Firewall, Virus Scan, and Security Center....go figure on what to do next...

Grandpa April 12th, 2007 04:15 PM

Go to start>Control Panel>Programs and Features and uninstall the services that are creating the problem. Or completely uninstall McAfee and install Avast.

SixInARow April 19th, 2007 08:58 AM

I just bought a new laptop with Vista on it. I had to use the offline installer on Limewire's site to get it to download, it would get stuck right after the download began normally. My problem is that it will not connect to the network, and my internet quits working as well yet I have all my bars on the wireless connection....What can I do?
edit: i'll go back through all the previous posts, I just zipped to the end to post..sorry.

Easy Fix for Vista and Limeware

I think I might have a much better way. Like all of you I could not get Vista to work for the life of me on my new computer with Vista. I had it on my older computer which was XP. I read these post and could not find Macfee so I didn’t know what to do. Just kept playing around and somehow got to internet options. I lowered my security setting there to the lowest and boom! It started to work right away. I didn’t uninstall or reinstall anything. When I’m done downloading what I want I raise the security level again. This should help those that don’t want to uninstall anything or risk the lack of security. You’ll only be unsecure for a few minutes. Hope this helps. SAL
