Files Slow down and Connection dies

Ive been trying looking into this problem for days now but I cant seem to find exactly what the problem is. Ill list my specs and other symptoms.

1. OS version? Windows Vista Home Premium
2. What firewalls you have? EZ Armor Internet Security
3. How much ram? 2048 mb ddr2
4. Hard Disk space available? 90gb
5. Connection type? broadband
6. Modem & router brand name & model numbers? Motorola Canopy Subscriber Module, Linksys WRT54GS v6 with DD-WRT v23 sp2 firmware
7. Where are you trying to connect from? Home...out in the country
8. What version of LimeWire (LW) & Java do you have? LW V.4.12.11, Java SE Runtime 6 (newest one)
9. Who is your ISP provider? Kingston Online (Wireless)
10. Do this simple test for us. Using your browser go here: http://www3.limewire.com:6346/ The page should say 'Your test worked!'. What happens when you go there? It worked
11. Are you sharing the connection with other computers or p2p sharing programs? If yes, please give details of set up. No
12. Is this a your 1st try at LW or is this a new problem with an experienced user. Limewire worked for me on windows xp sp2 but hasnt worked since i got my new computer
13. Do you see a brick wall in front of the blue world icon at the bottom of LW's interface? yes

- My ISP send my signal wirelessly to my house and the modem is mounted on my antenna so I cant do anything with it.

-Limewire is allowed in my firewall and it has been set up for port forwarding in the router usinng portforward.com

-Had no issues with Xp Media Center but i cant remember if Limewire could detect a firewall on that computer.

- I can download a single small file like an mp3 but any large files give me problems. They are much slower than on XP (download at 4 kbps as oppsed to 80 before) and the speed also fluctuates a lot. It will peak and then slow and crash my internet connection and then restart.

- If I try other p2p programs or torrents its the same.

Thats all i can think of but let me know if there is anything I missed. Basically the only difference on my system is Vista and I cant seem to get this to work. Any thoughts are much appreciated.

Did you ever connect with your currnet set up, if so just double check that your port forwarded number is still the same in the listening port box and the manual port forward box in limewire...

Also try disabling your EZ Armor Internet Security and see if you can get a better result...

Are you running Vista security at all...It's not wise to run 2 at once....

jmcginnis April 5th, 2007 08:29 PM

Vista firewall is disabled. I had just installed EZ Armor today and was using Vista firewall before that. No change with either allowing limewire or being disabled. As far as connecting, I can get full green bars right away but just cant download at the right speeds if thtas what you are asking. Also, both ports are still the same.

Try doing a speedtest and tell me what you get....
http://www.speedtest.net/

Also try downloading a magnetlink and tell me what speed you get for that...

jmcginnis April 6th, 2007 08:22 AM

Ok, My speed test was 1467 kb/s download and 551 kb/s upload.

I downloaded "The Scene Episode 001" at 25-35 kbps and it took about 20 mins. My internet did not shut down this time.

Something is definatley blocking your speeds...
I'm a little confused about what you have put down for your speeds is the 1467 the kbps or the KB/s...
And I take it the 25 - 35 is KB/s not kbps...Could you just clear that up..;)

When you Port Forwarded your Router are you sure it worked properly and did you set up the static IP first ??

jmcginnis April 6th, 2007 01:02 PM

Sorry about that both speeds are in kb/s.

As for the port forwarding I followed the steps on portforward.com exactly and put the settings into my router but other than that I wouldnt know if it was correct I guess.

Hmmm this is a hard one...Try these fixes it may help, it's worth a try...;)
Try uninstalling your Java from the add/remove programs and then re-install the JRE offline version....(4th one down)
http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp

Then uninstall Limewire using the uninstaller which is found in start > all programs > limewire...then re-install it using the offline installer...
http://www.limewire.com/english/cont...oadfree2.shtml

If that does not help with your problem try deleting your preference folder...

Ok, I did all three and no change. Any other ideas? Ive tried just about every option that I've found on here but no luck yet. One question though, my ISP says that are not restricting P2P at all but even if they were, this would in no way be relevant to Limewire detecting a firewall right?

wondering why April 7th, 2007 02:04 PM

I think it can, there have been cases of people seeing the firewall when their ISP has shaped their connection..

Are you using AERO in Vista ??

Try downloading the Beta version of Limewire 4.13 that has been known to work...
It's very good it also does torrents...I use it myself and recommend it...;)

jmcginnis April 8th, 2007 10:25 AM

I tried using the Beta version but no luck there either. Im also trying to get a better (3rd party) answer about whether or not my ISP is messing with P2P traffic. If so, it is a very recent change.
Also, about Aero, I have it sitting in the task bar but I never use it just because I never think to if thats what you mean.

Try the tips here & see if it makes any difference (you could even reinstall Java 6).
Reduce the drag caused by LW

I can't find anything to suggest that KOS are traffic shaping, but I guess it's possible. Their AUP vaguely mentions bandwidth management but you've used them with no probs before:confused: Unless you changed your internet plan recently?
http://www.kos.net/about/aup.kos

jmcginnis April 8th, 2007 10:30 PM

I have tried everything mentioned on the Reduce Drag link or it doesnt really apply to me (1000's od shared files and full queue for example) and KOS says no traffic shaping. Ive excludied just about every possibility except Vista so Im thinking of dual booting my laptop with XP sp2 and see if it is any different. Than at least I know its a Vista issue and find out whether or not I can adjust for it. Options are running out. Thanks for all the ideas though. I will keep you posted as Im sure that if this gets figured out it could help at least a few people.

wondering why April 10th, 2007 10:05 PM

That's a good idea with the XP, at least then you will know if it is Vista...
Please do keep in touch and let us know how you go...Good Luck...:rolleyes_2:

Update

Ok, here's the latest.

1. My ISP has confiremd no P2P blocking in any way shape or form.

2. The will not give out the username and password to access the router but they did say it has a built in firewall that could be the issue with the
Vista/P2P combo.

3. I tried dual booting with XP Pro with SP and my limewire speeds returned! However I also tried Azureus and the speed was generally the same and changed a lot.

4. Even though the speeds returned on limewire it still detected a firewall.

5. I also don think the port forwarding helped since I am now positive that my router is supporting UPnP and that the firewall being detected is the one in my modem.

Hope this helps.

wondering why April 11th, 2007 11:38 AM

The only thing is if you Port Forwarded correctly and the firewall you are seeing was the Nat firewall in your router it would disappear..

Did you know that you can log into your router by entering your ISP's IP number into the address bar in your browser....
Try logging in and have a look at the UPnP set up...
When you Port Forwarded how did you get into your router then ??
Did you go to the port forwarding site and follow these instructions ??
Make sure you don't forget the static IP part....

jmcginnis April 12th, 2007 04:31 AM

Sorry,
What I meant was that I have a firewall in my modem that I cant acesss. My ISP has set a password on this that they will not give out. I have tried port forwarding on my router but UpnP does work on it so it doesnt really change anything. Static IP is set also.
