Try uninstalling both LW & ZA, then reinstalling LW & finally reinstalling ZA? Making sure that LW is installed before ZA has fixed the problem for a few Vista users
Also, make sure that the Windows firewall's off & that ZA is allowing LW.
PortForward.com - Free Help Setting up Your ZoneAlarm Firewall.

Try this version of Java, some people have had connection problems with the latest updates. Download the JRE offline installer & remove any other Java versions before you install this one.

When you set up port forwarding, did you use the instructions here?
Port Forwarding for the Linksys WRT54G
And did you make sure to set up a static IP adress first? Otherwise port forwarding won't work.

I did what you suggested, but it hasn't helped. Also when I try to change the listening port limewire freezes... even if I try to disconnect so it's not attempting connection. I took the instructions from portforward.com - the limewire section. Also when I try to close limewire it still shows instances running in my task manager which I cannot close with the kill process button in the tastk manager. Is that normal and how do I kill limewire when I'm donewith it, The only thing I've found that works is restartin the computer. Thanks everyone

Try deleting LW's preferences folder when LW's properly closed. See point 3 here & also point 2 if you've used older versions of LW in the past (there could be a folder in either location).
Fixes for LimeWire
This will kill all of your settings within options, you'll have to go back through afterwards & reset things. If you're not sure of your settings, go through LW's tools > options & write them all down, so that you can reset things later.
