2 probs (LW keeps restarting & can't access options)

1. Vista home premium 32bit
2. windows
3. 2GB
4. 300GB
5. broadband
6. Modem & router brand name & model numbers? Uh?
7. Where are you trying to connect from ? home
8. LW 4.14.10 Java
9. Virgin (NTL)?
10.Test worked!
11. NO
12. Using LW just over 6 months
13. _No
14. UPnP enabled
15. Panda 2007

Firstly, everytime I close LW it restarts itself. Its probably something really simple as I cant see anyone else with this problem. Also when I select tools/options the menu pops up for a second then disappears. Seem to of fixed first problem by deleting LW folder in roaming, but sometimes it will work ok for a while when I reinstall the program.

Secondly, This is not LW related but any help would be appreciated. When i run Panda it comes up with a folder "\'\" in the user folder. I can access it from the search menu and as soon as i delete these rar files more turn up. they are all 110kb in size. I have tried other P2P programs in the past and I think I may let one of them use part of my hard drive for storage. It's really annoying as there are thousands of them and I want rid. can anyone help?

With thanks Stew61

In LW tools > options > advanced > system startup. Untick 'run on system startup > apply > ok. This will fix things if LW starts just once, when your computer starts.

If LW's continually trying to start, sounds like you have a worm. There's a fix here to try, it's worked for a lot of people. Click on the link below.
The easy fix for Limewire popping up every few seconds (try this first)

Always make sure that you're using a good AV program. Keep it updated & use it to scan all files that you download before you open them.

I'm no expert, but it sounds like the Panda problem's related to your computer being infected. Within that 'Viruses on the network' thread is info about multiple zip/rar files appearing. That thread has links to various AV programs & online scans.

Thank you, that BFU is pretty cool. However I have to run it every time I start my PC. Otherwise Windows just disappears. My AV is working and Windows firewall. I am going to look into those other links you suggested. Are there other scripts for BFU?

As to the problem with ther Users\name\'\ files. I don't know where I go them from, and the \'\ folder does not show up in Windows explore, but does when I search for it. Panda deleted nearly 40,000 files from that folder yesterday. Then i ran a search and there was even more. I disconnected from the internet and deleted all the files again and there was even more when I again did a search. Then I remembered Command prompt. I DIR -d \'\ and it must of taken at least 3 mins to list the files in that directory. then it was a simple DEL \'\ and all gone. I've just repeated the search and there are files there in \'\ but when I delete them it says "no longer locates in \'\" . So it looks like they've gone.
Sorry if Ive rambled but they took up a lot of harddrive and I wondered if anyone else had had this problem?

One last question does it make any differnce it I disable the DHT and TLS options?

Again thank you for your help.

birdy November 6th, 2007 01:10 AM

Disabling DHT & TLS might mean that LW uses a bit less of your computer's resources. You can disable them if you like! This thread (from another forum) suggests that TLS might not even be in use anyway.

I really think you should go to a site that can offer you specialised malware help;)

Same exact problems

I'm having exactly the same problems... keeps restarting on it's own, and also is loading the < ' > folder with thousands of program bits. will try those solutions when I get home... Please post if you get the problem solved, and by which method.

Birdy

I am working on it. i am working through spybot at the moment. BFU seems to of fixed the WW restarting but I did do a system restore after and LW is working as good as ever.
again thanks for your time and input.

Timsns those files have come back once since I deleted them all in command prompt. Which with Vista is in the accessories folder. If/when I finally find out how to permanently get rid I will let you know.

I have the same problem, I have done everything and there are no worms in my computer. This is definitely something to do with limewire.. Have tried many things but every time I exit limewire it pops back up.. Really annoying.. Any suggestions??
Thanks!

restarting and configuration problems

I too have the restarting and config problems.
Running Windows XP (media edition)
LW 4.14.10 pro
Java 1.6.0_03
Norton Firewall & virus (up to date)

I have tried BFU, ran Norton several times, did clean out a "downloader"
Tried different version of Java (as recommended in forum)
Still having problems shutting down LW
Also when I tried configuring LW the option menu flashes and disappears after one second. (Have tried the delete lime wire folder solution but it keeps re-appearing)

Also discovered the dreaded '/ folder and deleted the files through Dos prompt option.

Never had any problems with older versions of Limewire pro.

Download AVGfree AV, update it & then scan your computer...there's' a link for download in this thread: tools/options

That AV found the trojan which was causing the problems with options for the original poster. See whether that also fixes the popping up problem for you.

If not, look at Stew61's posts here in this thread...he did a system restore after using the BFU. Give that a try. If things are still bad, go to one of the malware removal sites listed in post #2 of this thread.

Thanks Birdy

But still no luck :(

I have tried to d/l AVG but my somputer will not let me install it, ran an updated Norton scan (again) no threats found. BFU freezes and stops responding.
The hidden folder ('\) with 700 files.

I had uninstalled Limewire yesterday - ran two different virus scans - nothing found

What ever it is it is annoying
