Moderators

There are senior members on the forums who serve as Moderators. These volunteers keep the board organized and moving.
Moderators are authorized to: (in order of increasing severity)
Move posts to the correct forums. Many times, members post in the wrong forum. These off-topic posts may impede the normal operation of the forum.
Edit posts. Moderators will edit posts that are offensive or break any of the House Rules.
Delete posts. Posts that cannot be edited to comply with the House Rules will be deleted.
Restrict members. This is one of the last punishments before a member is banned. Restrictions may include placing all new posts in a moderation queue or temporarily banning the offender.
Ban members. The most severe punishment. Three or more moderators or administrators must agree to the ban for this action to occur. Banning is reserved for very severe offenses and members who, after many warnings, fail to comply with the House Rules. Banning is permanent. Bans cannot be removed by the moderators and probably won't be removed by the administration.

The Rules

1. Warez, copyright violation, or any other illegal activity may NOT be linked or expressed in any form. Topics discussing techniques for violating these laws and messages containing locations of web sites or other servers hosting illegal content will be silently removed. Multiple offenses will result in consequences. File names are not required to discuss your issues. If filenames are copyright then do not belong on these forums & will be edited out or post removed. Picture sample attachments in posts must not include copyright infringement.

2. Spamming and excessive advertising will not be tolerated. Commercial advertising is not allowed in any form, including using in signatures.

3. There will be no excessive use of profanity in any forum.

4. There will be no racial, ethnic, or gender based insults, or any other personal attacks.

5. Pictures may be attached to posts and signatures if they are not sexually explicit or offensive. Picture sample attachments in posts must not include copyright infringement.

6. Remember to post in the correct forum. Take your time to look at other threads and see where your post will go. If your post is placed in the wrong forum it will be moved by a moderator. There are specific Gnutella Client sections for LimeWire, Phex, FrostWire, BearShare, Gnucleus, Morpheus, and many more. Please choose the correct section for your problem.

7. If you see a post in the wrong forum or in violation of the House Rules, please contact a moderator via Private Message or the "Report this post to a moderator" link at the bottom of every post. Please do not respond directly to the member - a moderator will do what is required.

8. Any impersonation of a forum member in any mode of communication is strictly prohibited and will result in banning.

9. Multiple copies of the same post will not be tolerated. Post your question, comment, or complaint only once. There is no need to express yourself more than once. Duplicate posts will be deleted with little or no warning. Keep in mind a forum censor may temporarily automatically hold up your post, if you do not see your post, do not post again, it will be dealt with by a moderator within a reasonable time. Authors of multiple copies of same post may be dealt with by moderators within their discrete judgment at the time which may result in warning or infraction points, depending on severity as adjudged by the moderators online.

10. Posts should have descriptive topics. Vague titles such as "Help!", "Why?", and the like may not get enough attention to the contents.

11. Do not divulge anyone's personal information in the forum, not even your own. This includes e-mail addresses, IP addresses, age, house address, and any other distinguishing information. Don´t use eMail addresses in your nick. Reiterating, do not post your email address in posts. This is for your own protection.

12. Signatures may be used as long as they are not offensive or sexually explicit or used for commercial advertising. Commercial weblinks cannot be used under any circumstances and will result in an immediate ban.

13. Dual accounts are not allowed. Cannot explain this more simply. Attempts to set up dual accounts will most likely result in a banning of all forum accounts.

14. Video links may only be posted after you have a tally of two forum posts. Video link posting with less than a 2 post tally are considered as spam. Video link posting with less than a 2 post tally are considered as spam.

15. Failure to show that you have read the forum rules may result in forum rules breach infraction points or warnings awarded against you which may later total up to an automatic temporary or permanent ban. Supplying system details is a prerequisite in most cases, particularly with connection or installation issues.

Violation of any of these rules will bring consequences, determined on a case-by-case basis.

Thank You! Thanks for taking the time to read these forum guidelines. We hope your visit is helpful and mutually beneficial to the entire community.

Confused Limewire Won't Connect

I used to get a Firewall error but let me reassure you that I have disabled everything that could even be conceived as a potential firewall. Now it just sits on Connecting... forever. I tried fixing this once and I finally gave up, I would really love to make it work. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

1. OS version? (eg: Windows 98) Vista
2. What firewalls you have? Windows firewall
3. How much ram? 1918MB
4. Hard Disk space available? 97GB free
5. Connection type? (eg: dialup, broadband, cable, etc.) Cable
6. Modem & router brand name & model numbers? Belkin 54G - Not sure of Model but have attempted to bipass via direct connection with same error.
7. Where are you trying to connect from (house, appartment complex, school, student accomodation, work, etc.)? House
8. What version of LimeWire (LW) & Java do you have? (Go to LW's menu Help>About LW...) Will show both LW & Java version. LW - 5.3.6; Java - 1.6.0_16
9. Who is your ISP (Internet Service Provider)? Comcast
10. Do this simple test for us. Using your browser go here: http://www3.limewire.com:6346/ The page should say 'Your test worked!'. What happens when you go there? Your test worked
11. Are you sharing the connection with other computers or p2p sharing programs? If yes, please give details of set up. One other desktop and on a rare occasion one laptop, both are usually off, the desktop is hard wired, the two laptops use the wireless modem.
12. Is this a your 1st try at LW or is this a new problem with an experienced user. I am familiar with LimeWire, I have been using it for a while on Windows XP, but this is the first time I tried it on my laptop using Windows Vista.
13. Do you see a brick wall in front of the blue world icon at the bottom of LW's interface? _ click here to see Sample image Used to, not anymore, still won't connect, just says connecting and the bars are gray...
14. For those using a modem/router, how is your modem/router set up...are you port forwarding or is UPnP enabled? I don't know? I've tried both settings in LW, and I've added the LW port to my list of connections. Don't know too much about the router.
15. What security programs are you using (antivirus etc)? Some people might not be aware that their security suite includes a firewall AVG, Spyboy, Adaware, Windows Defender, NONE of which are currently installed, I uninstalled all of them in an attempt to get this thing working.
16. What country are you living in? Sometimes there are ISPs with the same name in more than one country (eg Clearwire in the USA & also in Ireland). USA

Is your Belkin working in wireless mode or wired?

If LW has previously been added to your Vista firewall, remove it & re-add it. Add it to both UDP & TCP exceptions using sub rules & give it all port ranges.

If you are using LW on another computer, make sure they are not both attempting to connect through the same port. ie: LW's menu bar, tools -> options -> advanced -> superreallyadvanced -> firewalls.

Make sure your Belkin firewall is set up for UPnP. Have you logged into it to check?

Try these things: http://www.gnutellaforums.com/connec...t-connect.html

This does not sound at all good. BTW the way to check firewall status on LW 5 is via Tools menu -> Advanced Tools.

And yes, some spyware programs & even some 3rd party firewalls are anti-p2p sharing programs so you do need to be careful which ones you choose. AVG ... see http://www.gnutellaforums.com/host-c...tml#post347634

Ok, uh, I guess it's working in wireless mode? I mean technically the desktop is connected via a wire but the two laptops run through the wireless setting?

Limewire is on my approved list of my firewall but my Vista Firewall is also currently disabled.

I have both exceptions already, only thing is I had chosen the ports that limewire said it was running on. What number ports should I change it to?

Only this computer is now trying to access limewire, my old laptop worked fine with it but it died, so now I'm stuck with Vista and it will not work.

I have gone into my router settings and honestly don't see anything about UPnP so I'm not sure how to set that up.

I also tried changing the limewire firewall settings from the UPnP option to see if that would help.

I have no spyware, anti-virus or adware programs currently installed BUT the ones that I would normally use, DID work with Limewire on my previous Laptop with XP.

I have to leave for work in a minute, I may be back in a few hours during my break. If you have any other advice, please post it here, I imagine you won't be around by time I get off but I will try any steps to rectify it tonight.

I deleted the settings from my firewall and am readding it and I uninstalled my Java and will reinstall that tonight as well. I will let you know if anything changes.

Thanks.

Why when I try to re-add limewire to my vista firewall does it say I'm adding Limewire 4.18.6. - Didn't we say that I had Limewire 5? Even when I click on browse and choose my current limewire, it still has it listed that way.

Default Java Download ???

Okay so I'm home and ready for round two - One Problem.

I'm slightly malfunctioning at the moment and I'm not sure which offline Java I should download. Any chance someone could give me a direct link? Thank you.

Okay scratch that, figured out the java with a little assistance.

With that being said...

I deleted and readded Limewire to the Vista Firewall (although it's still disabled.)

I uninstalled Java and replaced it with the offline installation.

I checked Tools and Advanced Tools and it says that I AM behind a Firewall but when I click on why it says unknown. I don't understand!

I'm going to continue down the list on that other thread and see if it gets me anywhere.

After you deleted LW's preferences folder, did all of the settings within LW's options revert back to default?

What listening port is your LW using?

Did you make sure to remove all other Java versions installed on your computer, before you installed the latest update?

When you disabled LW's performance options, did you make sure to click 'ok' to save the change?

Have a look at the router & see whether you can find the model - if nothing's showing on top then have a look underneath. The model might start with F5D...., F1D...., F6D.... etc If we know the model then we might be able to help check out UPnP settings & also look at port forwarding.

Have you tried any other p2p apps & if so do you have the same connection problems? Some other free apps below.
FrostWire

Phex

BearShare

Default XP divers won't work under Vista

jaustera

It seems that Vista has struck again, I had the same problem you have when I tried to connect my son's (then) new Vista PC wirelessly to my modem. This should have worked especially as my other son's laptop and PC worked flawlessly while being further away and running under Windows XP.

The way I solved my son's problem, after weeks of trying to get "flakey Vista" to work with my modem's XP wireless driver was by going to my modem's website and downloading the (beta) Vista wireless driver.

The simple fact is that XP drivers are not stable under Vista, whether you set the O/S to run the driver in XP mode or not, I was only able to get my son's Vista O/S PC to connect to my modem by getting the driver specially written for Vista.
