Moderators

There are senior members on the forums who serve as Moderators. These volunteers keep the board organized and moving.
Moderators are authorized to: (in order of increasing severity)
Move posts to the correct forums. Many times, members post in the wrong forum. These off-topic posts may impede the normal operation of the forum.
Edit posts. Moderators will edit posts that are offensive or break any of the House Rules.
Delete posts. Posts that cannot be edited to comply with the House Rules will be deleted.
Restrict members. This is one of the last punishments before a member is banned. Restrictions may include placing all new posts in a moderation queue or temporarily banning the offender.
Ban members. The most severe punishment. Three or more moderators or administrators must agree to the ban for this action to occur. Banning is reserved for very severe offenses and members who, after many warnings, fail to comply with the House Rules. Banning is permanent. Bans cannot be removed by the moderators and probably won't be removed by the administration.

The Rules

1. Warez, copyright violation, or any other illegal activity may NOT be linked or expressed in any form. Topics discussing techniques for violating these laws and messages containing locations of web sites or other servers hosting illegal content will be silently removed. Multiple offenses will result in consequences. File names are not required to discuss your issues. If filenames are copyright then do not belong on these forums & will be edited out or post removed. Picture sample attachments in posts must not include copyright infringement.

2. Spamming and excessive advertising will not be tolerated. Commercial advertising is not allowed in any form, including using in signatures.

3. There will be no excessive use of profanity in any forum.

4. There will be no racial, ethnic, or gender based insults, or any other personal attacks.

5. Pictures may be attached to posts and signatures if they are not sexually explicit or offensive. Picture sample attachments in posts must not include copyright infringement.

6. Remember to post in the correct forum. Take your time to look at other threads and see where your post will go. If your post is placed in the wrong forum it will be moved by a moderator. There are specific Gnutella Client sections for LimeWire, Phex, FrostWire, BearShare, Gnucleus, Morpheus, and many more. Please choose the correct section for your problem.

7. If you see a post in the wrong forum or in violation of the House Rules, please contact a moderator via Private Message or the "Report this post to a moderator" link at the bottom of every post. Please do not respond directly to the member - a moderator will do what is required.

8. Any impersonation of a forum member in any mode of communication is strictly prohibited and will result in banning.

9. Multiple copies of the same post will not be tolerated. Post your question, comment, or complaint only once. There is no need to express yourself more than once. Duplicate posts will be deleted with little or no warning. Keep in mind a forum censor may temporarily automatically hold up your post, if you do not see your post, do not post again, it will be dealt with by a moderator within a reasonable time. Authors of multiple copies of same post may be dealt with by moderators within their discrete judgment at the time which may result in warning or infraction points, depending on severity as adjudged by the moderators online.

10. Posts should have descriptive topics. Vague titles such as "Help!", "Why?", and the like may not get enough attention to the contents.

11. Do not divulge anyone's personal information in the forum, not even your own. This includes e-mail addresses, IP addresses, age, house address, and any other distinguishing information. Don´t use eMail addresses in your nick. Reiterating, do not post your email address in posts. This is for your own protection.

12. Signatures may be used as long as they are not offensive or sexually explicit or used for commercial advertising. Commercial weblinks cannot be used under any circumstances and will result in an immediate ban.

13. Dual accounts are not allowed. Cannot explain this more simply. Attempts to set up dual accounts will most likely result in a banning of all forum accounts.

14. Video links may only be posted after you have a tally of two forum posts. Video link posting with less than a 2 post tally are considered as spam. Video link posting with less than a 2 post tally are considered as spam.

15. Failure to show that you have read the forum rules may result in forum rules breach infraction points or warnings awarded against you which may later total up to an automatic temporary or permanent ban. Supplying system details is a prerequisite in most cases, particularly with connection or installation issues.

Violation of any of these rules will bring consequences, determined on a case-by-case basis.

The freeze-ups sound like a video driver problem. Beleive it or not, many IE6 and XP problems are solved by upgrading your video driver. (This is because windows is a GRAPHICAL USER INTERFACE.) The problem may manifest itself with Limewire, but I bet getting updates - and running updates from windowsupdate.com will help.

I had the same problem then some. My basic Limewire works fine, but the constant barage of "Update to Limewire Pro" finally wore me down and I bought the $9.50 upgrade, figuring that if the basic works with XP, so does the Pro. WRONG! I got the same freeze up problems you did, PLUS my ADSL crashed and I had to manually remove all the limewire software, saving my music to desktop, reinstall my ADSL software, then re-download the Limewire basic.
AND, I can't find any link but this to ask for a refund of the upgrade! Good luck to you all. I am however, happy with basic and overall, I think Limewire is an okay deal.

Default It's XP, not Limewire

I had tremendous problems after I loaded XP onto the machine with Win98. I finally ended up losing ALL of my downloaded files (over 1200 mp3s), when FAT 32 became unstable and made the computer refuse to startup AT ALL. The quick fix- reinstalling XP with the "new" file system NTFS, failed. I believe because traces of the evil FAT32 remained. I have had to format the drive, reinstall XP and everything else yet again.

But XP then told me that Java was "damaged" so I downloaded from Sun the newest version. Thus far no problems. I'll just be busy putting the files back on the machine from cd's and downloading the ones I hadn't backed up.

I don't think the problems lie with Limewire, it's either the thing on the desk or the thing on the chair. In addition, the problem with corrupt files seems to have stopped with the download of new hot Java.

Unhappy xp!

You may have a point, that it is XP and not limewire that causes all the problems.
But still, if XP freezes only when limewire is around, it is most likely limewire's "fault".
XP isn't a really good os, as the rest of the win32 systems, and it's not ment to be stable.
But limewire REALLY bugs my system.

Some of it is mainly Sun's fault, for creating Java in the first place. But most of it is Limewire, that leaks memory like a incontinent old dog.

Limewire freezes up my Internet Explorer, my Netscape Navigator and my Explorer.exe. That I can live with, but when limewire freezes my computer, I get some serious issues with it..

Some unregistered user replied to one of my erased posts that it is my video drivers being out of sync, that causes my computer to freeze. Then explain why in gods name it doesn't freeze up when I'm not running limewire. Explain why limewire accesses my graphical adapter in a way that causes it do break. Explain why my network-load suddenly stops when "my graphical adapter hangs". There's something very fishy about the limewire, and I don't like it.

I've been reinstalling limewire and java in different orders now a couple of times, but nothing seems to help. And frankly, that's not the way I use software. That's a little too much magic for me, having the reinstall and reinstall to "get it right". It's not a stinking kernel i am installing, it's a java-klient to the gnutella network.

And quit erasing my posts, even though they are offensive to the limewire client. It should be taken out the back and get a real good bashing, it should!

Default It's not just XP

I've been having problems with freeze-ups and system crashes ever since I loaded LimeWire 2.5.5 (earlier versions never crashed even once), and I'm absolutely certain it's not XP -- I'm running Win98SE. I posted a message about this on another thread, and so far the only reply was from someone who said they've never seen LimeWire crash . . .

Default On my 500mhz Athlon 384M ram Win98se machine

Hi,

My two cents worth of data on this subject:

I have a cable connection that sometimes downloads at better than T1 speeds(>190MBs). The upload speed is only around 65Mbs though.

So... I enter T1 as my speed and connect to 10 'hosts'. I then start downloading many files. When I reach somewhere around 15 downloads and 20 'requeries' going all at the same time I have about a 50% chance of locking up my whole system. I've done this with 2.5.5 and 2.6.3, it is fairly repeatable.

I have never been able to notice what was happening on the upload side of things when this happens. I suspect that I might have had several uploads going at the time.

I figured this was an issue of system resources so I didn't worry too much about it. In my case if I connect to no more than 4 'hosts' I can have all the downloads going that I want without a problem.

I have noticed that when LW is trying to auto connect to hosts It gets REAL SLOW in responding at the download window. Again, I figured this was a system resource issue so I don't worry about it.

Ken

Unhappy Windows 2000 lockups

I was cruising along fine and happy with LimeWire 2.6.5 Pro and JRE 1.3.1, and then I decided to install LW 2.7.3 Pro and JRE 1.4.1. And that's when all my troubles began . . .

I'm running Windows 2000 SP3 on a Celeron 500 with 256 MB RAM, an nVidia GeForce 4, a SoundBlaster Live! Value, and a D-Link ISA NIC. Since installing LW 2.7.3, I've had problems with the system spontaneously locking up, seemingly at random, even when I'm not running LimeWire. When I am running LW, I can expect the system to freeze within a minute or so. I share roughly 5000 files, although 2.7.3 has never gotten through the process of sharing these out, for obvious reasons.

Hangs outside of LW usually occur when I have Mozilla loaded, which leads me to believe the problem may reside in some Java module that LimeWire loads or installs, since that seems like the only point of commonality between the two programs. My other thought is that the problem is a driver issue, given that the system hangs completely (no three-finger salute). I've tried running LimeWire with JRE versions 1.3.1, 1.4.0, and 1.4.1, with identical results.

Unfortunately, I overwrote my LW 2.6.5 installer. If anyone has a copy, please let me know. I'd be perfectly happy rolling back to the older version.

Thanks!

Tom

Default Adios, LimeWire

Well, it looks like the good folks at LimeWire don't care to announce the fact that version 2.7.3 is a massive disaster, and their only response to all the complaints I've been reading appears to be to stonewall.

While BearShare lacks the tabbed searching feature that was so useful in LimeWire, it's a lot nicer in many other ways, so I think I'll test drive that for a while.

The posts about Java are right on the money.

It is my experience that whatever PC you buy or have now that has an MS OS as its OEM, don't upgrade it more than one level unless you're buying mid-OS release, in which case, look to buy those PCs that say they are pre-approved for the OS upgrade.

Wi*** to Win98 is okay.
Wi*** to Win98 to Win2K is not okay (unless pre-approved to Win98).

Win98 to Win2K is okay.
Win98 to Win2K to WinXP is not okay (unless pre-approved to Win2K).

Win2K to WinXP is okay.
Win2K to WinXP to Win$$ is not okay (unless pre-approved to WinXP).

Get the idea?

Don't overtax your PC's OEM config with multi-generation upgrades. Get over the idea that PCs are eternally upgradeable. They are not. Not yet.
