Your link points to the Java Standard edition with all sorts of stuff I don't want, and has a footprint over 200Mb. I'll stick with my itty bitty run time for now.

I went to the download page, and it says I have the latest.

If you choose "Windows Installation", under the JRE column, in the 'Download J2SE v 1.4.2' area [NOT the with Netbeans..], the download should be about 1MB.

And the period at the end of the link caused me a deal of grief until I figured out that was the problem. But all is well with the link now.

With LimeWire 3.3.3, it no longer hangs the entire computer. So that is good. It run for over 2 hours before it lost it's connection and took my other connections with it (Outlook could no longer send/receive mail, Messenger was disconnected, could not play internet backgammon (gads!)).

All apps recovered nicely once I shut down LimeWire.

That's good to hear it no longer freezes your computer, although still bad to hear it drops all connections.

Have you tried disabling Ultrapeer mode?

I also am having the same problem, see my previous posts. Running 3.3.4 with Java 1.4.2, with UltraPeer disabled. And still getting a system freeze after 3-5 minutes or so. However I am wondering if it the satellie connection I am using. Does the large satellite latency perhaps cause a problem? Although I doubt that would freeze my system up. As always, any suggestions appreciated.

For myself, disabling Ultrapeer seems to be working fine for me.

So now I have LimeWire 3.3.3, Java 1.4.2 final, Ultrapeer disabled, and a really high port number (20400).

This combination seems to be working so far. I have had it run for 4 hours and there were no problems.

So far, so good. Atleast for me.

You can also try disabling outgoing and incoming compression (Advanced -> Compression, check both boxes) and possibly the row stripes (View -> Row Striping) -- that seems to help speed things up on my slower computer.

I think it is hopeless. Did all the above suggestions, but still freezes my system after a minute or 2. At first I thought it was the Java, byt running the sample Java programs doesn't freeze up my computer. Only when I run Limewire. It never did this before XP. Guess I will keep trying the new Limewire versions as they come out, or wait until the next system software upgrade :(

Sorry about the lockups, Clem. We're trying hard to make LimeWire as lightweight and speedy as possible, but it's not very easy for a program this complex. All the options and different OSes that LimeWire runs on makes it difficult to test as well, because there's almost an infinite amount of configurations that can change how LimeWire works.

I assume you've tried running the 3.4.1 beta?

Adam is also working on some elegant changes to message processing, which should significantly reduce the amount of threads required (and in turn reduce the amount of memory and CPU required), so that might help stabilize things a bit, although I have no clue when it's going to be released even as a beta.

Got it working fine. The problem was I had an old version of the Directway software driving my satellite connection. Just downloaded the new software and for fun, tried Limewire again, with all the other changes that were suggested on this forum. Running perfectly. Thank you for your help.
