Can't Load Limewire

I don't know what it is, probably more of Microsoft's BS, but Limewire won't load up AT ALL. It's like Microsoft is secretly blocking the program from being used or something.

HELP ME?! Why, when I open Limewire, does it not load AT ALL? It's like I might as well have not clicked on it because it does nothing. Any suggestions!? PLEASE!?

Satoris October 25th, 2004 07:07 PM

It doesn't matter where I click on it. Any shortcut on the desktop, through the start menu, or through the root folder don't load anything. I re-installed it and it still does nothing...

... i don't suppose Kazaa would have anything to do with it would they? I uninstalled it but I suppose it could have installed some anti-limewire stuff anyway.

Have you considered doing a system maintenance check with whatever utilities you have? ALso check your comp for viruses, adware, etc. Here's some: -ad-ware http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/
-Spybot - Search & Destroy 1.3 http://www.safer-networking.org/en/mirrors/index.html
-Spy Sweeper http://www.webroot.com/wb/downloads/index.php & also defrag your hard disk drives.

This may/maynot help: http://www.gnutellaforums.com/showth...9050#post99050 OR this http://support.microsoft.com/default...2Futility2.asp

Did you use the english installer? Some people solve installation probs by using the international installer which uses a different type of installer (InstallAnywhere whereas the english version uses InstallShield.) The 2 disadvantages with the international installer is it's much larger dwnld size (although the program itself is the same size), & it installs the Java 1.3 version.

Alternatively try out the LW beta 4.1.7. More info can be found here: http://www.gnutellaforums.com/showth...5&pagenumber=1

i installed international and it works every time now

but....

Now, whenever I play any vids through LW, my comp freezes up and shuts down and says "fatal error"

Just leaving LW on for 5 minutes will make the comp freeze and shut down also.

SAVE ME! I have over 2500 vids and songs, so it's for your own benefit!

Delete your Java 1.3 & update to the latest Java http://www.java.com/en/download/windows_automatic.jsp (that's probably the best to to force the interntional version to use the update version!)

Also although you can preview video from LW's dwnld's. May I highly recommend that you normally only play video outside of LW; ie: if it's already dwnlded, then open it using your default video player & not using LW as a go-between. This is obviously causing some issues on your comp. Within you incomplete folder you'll also find Preview files which are created everytime you preview a file. May I suggest you delete these (only the preview files.) If you have previewed many video files, then you may have many of these which are taking up valuable space! I've heard of people running out of hard disk space because they hadn't cleaned out their video preview files.

Forcing LW Pro International to use later versions of Java

Hi LOTR

I was somewhat surprised by your reply to Satoris about forcing LW Pro International to use other versions of Java, namely version 1.4 and upwards. Unless something has changed quite recently we had just concluded, thanks to Sberlin’s great insight, that this was not currently possible.

Here is the link: [URL=http://www.gnutellaforums.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=27954]

My understanding is that Java 1.3, shipped with LW Pro International, is fully integrated with the program and, after having a look in my “C:\Program Files\LimeWire” folder, that Java cannot be easily extracted or deleted.

It seems, unless I am told otherwise, that the only way to get LW Pro International to use later versions of Java is to provide some sort of manual selection facility, preferably under the “Tools\Options” menu.

If that method works then that's great. It would solve that issue hopefully. I'm not a pc user per se, so your experience is welcome. I only suggest using the international version for installation probs where the InstallAnywhere installer is able to overcome issues that InstallShield has on 'certain systems'. As stated, Java 1.3 is a disadvantage of the Intern'l version. But maybe my suspicion of Java being the issue might be incorrect. It's very often the cause of an issue.

sberlin October 27th, 2004 11:59 AM

If you want to use a later version of Java, don't use the international installer. It's really as simple as that.

If, for some strange reason, the English installer doesn't work, then I suppose you could delete the 'jre' directory in LimeWire, and it'll instead try and find another JRE. However, that entirely depends on how your system is set up, and could potentially cause problems.

The JRE is chosen before LimeWire is even started, so a setting within LimeWire will not work. (Yes, it theoretically is possible, but choosing the version of Java could cause so many problems that it really isn't worth it.)

Obviously the international installer & java 1.3 is not causing everybody problems, but if it is such an issue then why isn't it taken off the dwnld shelf until it is updated properly. Else ship the english version with alternative installers.
