Windows Firewall

My limewire says that theres a wirewall blocking it, but i turned my windows firewall off and it still doesn't work, i also tried iMesh, the same problem occurs there, i have windows anti-spyware, and norton anti-virus as well, but they don't have firewall i don't think... can anyone help me out with what to do!?!?!?

Norton has a firewall and Norton sucks. Really. Install Avast (free anti-virus, firewall) http://www.avast.com/ then uninstall the plaque also known as Norton AV. You will be better equiped against viruses and LW will function better.

I use Norton Firewall 2005 and, although it is sometimes difficult, it is not enough to say it "sucks". A reason for it "sucking" would be far more helpful.

I am not going to defend or promote this product because the chances are there are more user friendly firewalls available, whether they are more effective is another matter, but at this stage I could not point to one.

I have always used NPF with LWPro and I have never ever had any problems with the two programs conflicting with each other, so your bold statemet about "sucking" needs clarification.

The present version of LW seems to be more sensitive to firewall detection. There's plenty of people who have posted their concerns that with previous versions they didn't get firewall issues before but now all of a sudden are getting firewall warnings from LW.

I recently upgraded to LWPro 4.9.11 and, as I said before, use NPF2005 and I do not have any problems whatsoever.

Therefore, I am surprised when someone criticises one of these products without any form of coherent explanation, it’s like asking to accept someone’s word on faith only especially when you don’t know what their motives are.

Basically, all I am asking is for people to explain their criticisms.

hardware firewalls (NAT routers) is the best. for MANY reasons, the most notable are that its not software and wont take up any memory, its very easy to configure, its more secure since its operating on the perimeter of the network, and you can split you connection up and create your own network, and the most notable is that they are not as prone to crashing, hence they are more reliable. so any decent hardware firewall will outperform ANY software firewall by a longshot. even speed is much faster.

UK Bob, sorry I offended you, but there are many reasons behind my idea of Norton being the plague. I've seen it destroy computers. It is one of the worst AV to actually find viruses in many tests. It also uses more RAM than others. Finally, it is not free and people have to pay anually to get their computer protected: try to make that happens with newbies, old persons etc.

Get Avast! I installed on many computers and it is the most uniobstrusive efficient AV. And free for home usage.

I would also like further clarification on this subject.

As with ukbobboy01 I run NIS, and have no problems.

Also as ultracross said about NAT firewalls my modem also has one, which is in use.

I have no problems running NIS with LW nor does my NAT firewall either.

There are many anti-virus and firewall programs both free and comercial that do a fine job. Best to do your home work and research the products t-mac.

i have to agree with et voilà on this. i have seen norton pass up obvious virus's that i have purposely put on my computer and avg will pick them up (such as netbus and subseven etc) but norton never does. i havent tried norton internet security, but if it operates the same way as its AV does, i dont want anything to do with it.

i have done back to back comparisons with the home retail versions against avg, and avg seems to always outdetect and outperform norton.

I did not say that you can't get LW and NIS together working well. Many users don't know what to respond at first when they see the Norton pop up when LW is installed for the first time and they choose not allow access by fear. It's cool that Norton is sufficient for your needs, but you should really try alternatives too if you want to comment on the product quality. I've tried McAffee, Norton, Grisoft AVG (another free app) and Avast. My preferences are:

1: Avast
2. AVG
3. Norton
4. McAffee

Do what best suits yourself guys, just be aware of free alternatives.

Of course, as ultracross said the best firewall is a hardware one such as a router.

LODR: LW firewall detection when running as a leaf has always been a little imprecise. Having the status bar in 4.9 just shows what was hidden before. (did you chech error reports each 5 mins in 4.8? )
