upgraded to version 4.9.28, can't connect using explorer

I've upgraded to 4.9.28 and now my explorer won't connect. I have XP SP2, I have a working DSL connection. I can connect using AOL dial up. I've tried removing spyware but nothing works. I downloaded Firefox and that doesn't connect either. I've looked all over these forums for the same problem but I haven't found anything. This is a first time post so bare with me.
