Limewire's raising my cpu usage to 100%

Any particular reason for this? I have a Pentium4 3.5mhz 1gig of ram, and 500gigs of hard drive space

rockinstern September 9th, 2006 08:11 AM

Currently, I have Limewire Pro 4.12.3 and Java 5.0 I believe

NewRipper September 9th, 2006 09:21 AM

CPU usage 100%

I have had the same problem today

- CPU usage 100%
- removed and reinstalled Java j2SE RE v5.06
- removed and reinstalled limewire and frost wire 4.10.9 beta

- process using CPU is javaw.exe

no joy

please help me understand why this is happening?

cheers, nr

Peerless September 9th, 2006 09:31 AM

as Sleepless mentioned, the latest version of Sun Java is Java j2SE RE v5.08...so try uninstalling Java yet again, and dowload and install the latest release and see if that helps

NewRipper September 9th, 2006 09:35 AM

CPU usage 100%

I know and I was running j2SE RE v5.08 earlier

- as it was using 100%, i reinstalled v5.06

cheers, nr

Peerless September 9th, 2006 09:49 AM

alrighty then, sounds indeed like you have followed a logical 1st step of action..

now let's try a 2nd step...download and install both AdAwareSE and SpyBot search and destroy, install them, update them (as a note, w/spybot I suggest one of the Safer Networking servers to download from), then run them...I'll bet they find something on your machine...if they do, try running LW again and see if your Java is still acting up..if that fails, post back and we'll try a HijackThis scan and see what it turns up...

Sleepless September 9th, 2006 09:50 AM

Try these fixes, even though you don't get an error. Might help

http://www.java.com/en/download/help/5000041000.xml

NewRipper September 9th, 2006 11:32 AM

CPU usage 100%

folks, i should have mentioned this

- ran adaware and spybot before i posted

- also ran sleepless links for java error

- ran antivirus software

- also ran hijack thid

no joy

now lime wire.exe is the s/ware using 100%

cheers,nr

NewRipper September 9th, 2006 04:07 PM

- thanks for that and no it didn't work

- neither have i tried this software

- i am just trying to see what lime wire is all about but it doesn't work

- now only if someone would tell me where the limewire preferences folder is located, then as suggested by sleepless, i will delete it as the next step

- all in the name of understanding Gen Y talk of course

cheers, nr

birdy September 9th, 2006 04:21 PM

For deleting the preferences folder, see points 2 & 3 below. Just make sure LW's closed before deleting!

Then what did you try in the link I provided ?

NewRipper September 9th, 2006 04:41 PM

thanks birdy

mate, i found the preferences folder and deleted it - no joy

when i start to change the folder for sharing, the system freezes - cpu usage hits 100%

looks like i will be stuck in gen x

cheers, nr

Peerless September 9th, 2006 05:02 PM

interesting....very, very interesting...(and disturbing of course)

ok...then try this....change the name of the folder that is currently your sharing folder...then create a new (empty of course) one with the same name...then start up LW and see what happens....

Sleepless September 9th, 2006 05:08 PM

Have you tried a clean install ?

Delete Limewire using start>programs>Limewire>uninstall
Then delete the preference folder again and do a windows search for lime. Delete anything associated with Limewire

Then uninstall all Java

Download this one (use the offline installer)

http://www.java.com/en/download/windows_xpi.jsp

Do the check on the downloadpage after restarting your PC

Then download and install Limewire once again use the offline installer

www.limewire.com

I has worked for some

Dammit.. just lost KK to AA (all in on flop) ;)

NewRipper September 9th, 2006 05:49 PM

peerless and sleepless - i have done everything you said - used windows unisntaller to uninstall java - used limewire unistall to uninstall limewire

offline install for both j2se and limewire

in the limewire setup dialog, when i hit the browse button to change the default folder, cpu usage spikes to 100% and limewire freezes

NewRipper September 9th, 2006 05:54 PM

just used the default save folder - limewire install finished but cpu usage spiked to 100% and stays at 100% (48,536-48,600Kb being used by limewire.exe) - just hit 49,000kb

cheers nr

Sleepless September 9th, 2006 08:58 PM

Well I officially give up now. It's up to Peerless

The only thing I can recommend is getting an older version. Something pre 4.10 Try to PM Lord Of The Rings. I believe he has some old versions.

You will need an email account that has at least 5 MB free. Believe they are about 4 MB but can't remember

I only have Pro installers saved unfortunatly

Limewire does use quite a lot of ram but little CPU usually. 48000 might even be pretty normal

Could you give more specs on what kind of PC it is and protective software you use for future reference and maybe a fix later

Peerless September 9th, 2006 09:15 PM

there is definitely something wacky going on here...

reminds me of when I had installed a new hosts file, and it was wacked...did exactly the same thing....and it took me a week to figure out wtf was up...in my case, since the hosts file is directly associated with your OS, I had that symptom as soon as I booted up..cpu totally sucked dry, temps of the thing through the roof..took me a couple of days to figure out which system process was doing it, then a few more to remember I had installed that new hosts file...upon removal, things went back to normal...

hmmm..the only thing I can think of at this moment is that something deep in LW is totally corrupted...

when you did your uninstall, reinstall stuff, did you by any chance manually delete everything that was left?

like in the incompletes folder, totally deleting said folder?

and in program files deleting the entire LW folder?

maybe even doing a search in your registry and totally removing ALL traces of LW?

and as noted, changing the name of your downloads and shared folders so that upon a new install, they are not associated with LW at that point...

basically I think you need to really wipe your system clean of any traces of LW ever having been there, starting with a totally clean slate and a totally empty shared/download folder

twisteddman September 11th, 2006 02:41 AM

i am having this exact same problem. it started yesterday. i had LW running overnight in the mornihg it had stopped with an error. i restarted and it worked fine untill i noticed that my computer was running slow. it was LW using 100% of my cpu. i have already tried reinstall an looking for viruses an spyware and every thing else that has been suggested. ive noticed that it slowly starts using more and more cpu, and that if i shutdown all searches in LW it gets better and then starts using more and more cpu again untill after several hours it will error and ill have to cntr alt delete and shut it down. i only inatalled LW two weeks ago. it ran peachy untill yesterday.

birdy September 11th, 2006 03:27 AM

Here's another thread about using too much CPU
http://www.gnutellaforums.com/showth...ght=100%25+CPU

If you use the forum search to look for 100% CPU, 99%CPU, too much CPU etc etc... you'll probably find a heap of old threads & maybe some other things to try:)

twisteddman September 11th, 2006 04:10 AM

the info on those threads didnt help. i did just change to to an older version to increase my download speeds as was suggested to me for that and it seems to have rid me of this issue. i changed to version 4.9.37. but thanks for trying to help by suggesting that i didnt try searching for my problem first.

Draxxus902 September 11th, 2006 08:45 AM

I've got the same problem, if I find out what's going on I'll post it up.

NewRipper September 12th, 2006 01:25 AM

folks;

I have tried everything suggested by peerless and sleepless -

deleted all traces of limewire from registry and machine - no joy - btw i have 2 gb of ram

so draxxus902, i look forward to your findings

Draxxus902 September 12th, 2006 06:14 AM

I even cleaned my registry (even though I just installed windows on this computer 2 days ago) and it still goes slow. The only thing I haven't tried yet is the old version of Java (4.2234 or whatever). I'll try that and report back.

NewRipper September 12th, 2006 11:51 AM

mate, i have done all of the above incl. changing java versions, deleting all folders associated with limewire and searching and deleting registry entries for any traces of limewire.

on reloading, limewire still uses 100% cpu

it may be an issue with the new version of limewire (v 4.12.6)

can someone give me an older version of limewire to try

other than that, i give up

if the people who develop limewire are reading this, please HELP

cheers, nr

Shawna629 September 22nd, 2006 07:26 AM

The same thing is happening with me. I did everything in this thread with no avail! I don't know what else to do!

Starfleet October 29th, 2006 10:22 PM

100% CPU does stop

Hey folks,
I am using Windows OneCare and have been overjoyed to dump Norton and the rest but my LimeWire Pro 4.12.6 also is maxing the CPU. I tried all the above mentioned steps then I just let my machine (P4, 2 Gig RDRAM & 1.2 TB HDD's) sit at max for 1 hour or so and it all returned to normal. It should not do this as I have another machine same spec that it does not do it to. I suspect software incompatiblity somewhere like Pinnacle Server or the like but I am now leary of restarting my machine. I will keep trying to isolate the process that causes this and will let you know if I am successful.:D

mag63 November 3rd, 2006 08:37 PM

100% cpu useage too!!

Same here..
I could b4 get a preview of what I was downloading, not any more as the media player won't load now that LimeWire uses 100% cpu power.
I could surf the net/ e-mail/ MSN ect. now if LimeWire is on it can barely run it's self..:bangh: :bangh:

Konkeror November 4th, 2006 06:36 PM

Same problem here, i open lime wire, it uses 100% cpu, and my comp restarts... i have tried all, erasing ".limewire" folder, downloading al older version of lime wire, fixing java, everything and the problem continues....

if someone knows how to fix it, please help!!

yankee November 4th, 2006 08:53 PM

Ive experienced this same problem after so many hours of use. As far as i can tell it isnt a ram issue. Got 512 ram and 1000 megs puter min/ 2000 megs max. 1.7gig p4 cpu. At times it seems that lw just eats up the cpu resources. I just restart lw (4.12.3) and all is fine.

Sleepless November 4th, 2006 09:02 PM

To everyone having 100% CPU trouble. If all of you posted as much info on your system as possible then maybe we could figure out the source of the problem. E.g. protective software, browsers, firewall, other P2P apps and anything that for some strange reason could make this happen. Maybe even computer brand and model, as it could possibly come from some brand specific accessories

Java and Limewire version also.

Just make it as detailed as possible. That way you can compare and find similarities in your setup.

I've tried just a restart on LW and makes no difference!!!

Thanks will do, I posted the 13 things on the list as recomened by (Birdy) can I add to the same post?

cheers M.

Sleepless November 4th, 2006 09:19 PM

You could but probably a good idea to link to it from your post here then.

The 13 things that you speak of have to do with connection trouble and this is not a connection problem, but an incompatability problem as far as I can see

I had some trouble with the early 4.10 versions of Limewire myself. Never did figure out what was wrong.

Have you tried the new Beta?
It might just fix things up. There is a link to download it in "Open Discussion Topics" forum

You might want to give Java 6 (Beta 2 ) a try and see if it helps any. You can ge it at the link below. Use Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Beta 2 and use the offline installer.

Grandpa You've hit the nail on the head, FANTASTIC I have 38 processes running at present and 3 applications and CPU is only 10%. :yahoo: :xirokrotima: :super: :exel: :yourock: :thankyou:

Many thanks from Mark and the next few 1000 who read this too..

Grandpa November 5th, 2006 12:32 AM

Happy to see it worked. Enjoy

voltaire November 6th, 2006 07:29 AM

I'm also having 100% CPU usage problems.
LimeWire.exe: 92-98%, Firefox.exe: 3%, explorer ~2%, everything else about 0.
Specs: P4 2.8Ghz, 512MB Ram, XP Home SP2.
Limewire 4.12.6, Java 1.5.0_03
I'll try this Java 1.6.0-beta2 now...

Edit: Oh yeah. That took 5 minutes and now Limewire.exe is at 00-06%, 29Mb RAM.
Thanks!

100% CPU Fix

Well I just downloaded and installed :yikes: the 4.13 Beta and my problem is apparaently solved. My CPU is running approx 40% while the Sharing is scanning my sharing files (14,000 of them) and my machine is still working great. I noticed that I never did get an official response but it works great now.:xirokrotima:

Konkeror November 16th, 2006 05:01 PM

ok, im kinda confused with the problem's solution

getting Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Beta 2 and using the offline installer?

or getting the 4.13 Beta version of limewire?

birdy November 16th, 2006 06:44 PM

Try the Java beta (offline installer) first. If that doesn't help...try the LW beta;)

Konkeror November 16th, 2006 07:24 PM

sorry to ask again, but, is this the java version i gotta install?

"Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Release Candidate
The Java SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications."

thanks :aweof:

birdy November 16th, 2006 07:28 PM

Yes:D

You'll have to make sure that you've removed your old Java versions before installing that beta.

Konkeror November 18th, 2006 09:40 AM

I've just downloaded the java 6, and when i try to open limewire, it collapses...
