Install does not recognize Java 2 REse v1.4

If I try to install Limewire on WinXP (PIV, 1Ghz, 256MB ram), they ask to install Java RE v1.3. Java REse v1.4 is currently installed but not recognized. So the install stops because I don't want to install an earlier version of Java RE. How do I fix that LimeWire recognizes v1.4? THNX
