in windows XP you would hit the start bar and choose control panel...

once there, you would double click on Add or Remove Programs...wait for the list to be populated...then scroll through and look for any codec pacs you may have installed...for instance, I have the Klite codec pac installed, and its clearly listed as such...once you find it, choose to uninstall/remove it...then reinstall it (you will of course need the installer to do so...it might be a good idea to hunt one down before you begin this process)
