Playing movies

I need to know how to switch my player. i have a windows Vista and most of the movies I download will not play on windows media player because of a codec. I downloaded divX player or whatever but how do I get them to open with that or another player? Or how can i use wind. media player, but get them to play and recognize the codec? PLEaSE RESPOND ASAP please
