Default 1608 installdriver instance error....my experiences

It seems this is a common problem on win2k machines, and I am having this problem on installing version 1.8 and 2.0

Here is what i have done so far. All have which have failed, but some of them may work for other people.....(not me though!)

I know nothing about this bug, but from what i have read it is a security issue (i think). There is a microsoft KB article (Q105416) on the problem, and it talks about changing your Dcomcnfg.exe settings, and also the security settings of c:/windows/installer.

I tried all that it said, but no luck.

I have tried installing the package as administrator - again no success.

I have tried downloading and running cydoor.exe before installing (recommended in another post). Again no luck.

I have removed limewire1.7 before installation - no luck.

I have clicked my heals and said "no place like home" before installation - no success there either.

So I guess I am stuck with version 1.7 until this problem is fixed? But the problem has been around since version 1.8 from what i read, so it doesn't look like being fixed anytime soon.

if any developers are here - can u give us win2k users any thoughts? Any chance of repackaging version 2.0 using the installer that was used in version 1.7 ???

I had the exact same problem, but them I downloaded the install from the alternate site, and for whatever reason, it worked perfectly.

We added an FAQ item for this issue at:

http://www.limewire.com/index.jsp/faqs#Installation

Also, I would strongly recommend uninstalling all previous LimeWire versions in the Control Panels>>Add/Remove Programs window, restarting, and trying the installer again.
