Firewall. How many times have you heard this, "Hi I am a newbie". Well, surprise, surprise, I am a newbie and wish to ask you folks for your help. I am thoroughly enjoying using Limewire but today I just happened to hover my pointer over the 'Globe' in the bottom left of the download screen and I got the words "Limewire does detect a Firewall. I have a Firewall which is Zone Alarm Free, i would be most grateful if you could explain this to me. luya56 |
You need to make an exception in the ZoneAlarm firewall and limewire should work. |
Zaraabath, I am most grateful indeed for that very swift response. I am going to prove to you that I really am a newbie. How do I execute what you suggest. The only info. I can give is, when I go to Zone Alarm program control, Limewire has four ticks next to it, I suppose that means it's protected, is that correct? If it is, then I don't understand the message "Limewire does not detect a Firewall. luya56 |
you need to give the model of your modem/router as some have built in firewalls. The ZoneAlarm is fine. |
Zarabaath, it would help all here if you would please actually read the posts. luya56 IS USING LimeWire and enjoying it. The post is a request for general info... Quote:

Want to try again ? |
It means limewire is blocked by some kind of firewall, either a software one, or a modem/router one. |
First of all, thank you Ursula (I once courted a lovely girl called Ursula if you knew how old I am, you would say " you must have good memory" lol) for your input, it's most appreciated. Zabaarath, I am afraid I am unable to give you any more info. than I already have, except to say my Modem is a Conexant Soft K56 Modem(M). Regards luya56 |
Have a look on PortForward.com - Free Help Setting up Your Router or Firewall and try and find your router on there to see if it's got a firewall. |

http://www.gnutellaforums.com/connec...-you-post.html As the Conexant Soft K56 Modem is a built in dial up modem and doesn't have a firewall, if you are using broadband, cable, dsl, your modem/router is the little black box that connects you to the internet, if you have a look underneath it you will find the make and model number for it...;) |
Zarabaath and wondering why, thank you for your reply. I looked underneath the Modem and it's a BT Voyager 105. It's a basic router and after Googling, it appears to me it doesnt have a Firewall. I am running on Win XP Home, I have 768mb RAM, 38GB Hard Drive free space and and an external Hard Drive with 280GB free space. As stated in my initial post, I have AVAST Anti Virus Free and ZONE ALARM Firewall free installed, both detected on AOL start up....luya56 |
Who is your ISP ?? What Java version are you using at the moment as well ?? |
wondering why, apologies for not responding sooner, I have been away for a few days. My ISP is AOL but being a beginner I am unable to tell you which version of Java I have. When I click on Java and then Properties it says alongside File Type-- File Folder...luya56 |
Wondering why, I should have looked in my program control in the first place. The Java version is 5.0110.3 Regards ...luya56 |
You could try these fixes... Try uninstalling all versions of Java from the add/remove programs and then re-install the JRE 5.11 offline version.... Hi, again, luya56... A simple thought re: your problem... What I wonder is whether or not you may have performed an update of your XP Home installation ? Especially an update that involved installing Windows XP Service Pack 2. (XP Service Pack 2 is a bit notorious as it includes a 'built-in' firewall that is enabled as default. Best to disable it.) Perhaps, because of your relatively small bandwidth capacity, you had avoided Microsoft updates in the past but now you have done the SP2 update ??? I am also a bit confused as you state that you are using the Conexant Soft K56 Modem AND another Modem/Router, the BT Voyager... You are not using both. Perhaps the Conexant is for a FAX line or something ? And, a little later... Right- I checked the BT Voyager 105... It's an ADSL modem router so, there goes all that sympathy for you re: your slow dial-up connection... :p But, this only reinforces my thought that it is possible that you did do the XP SP2 update fairly recently and the SP2 firewall may be the culprit ! |
