Default Limewire won't even open - Java JRE problem

Hello everyone and salutations. My first post.
I had a Mcafee error that required uninstalling and reinstalling that program. Perhaps by coincidence, I cannot open Limewire. By clicking on my desktop icon, I immediately get the error message: "Limewire Launcher Error: Limewire needs the Java Runtime Environment 5.0 or above. Click OK to go to java.com where you can install java."
Well, having done that twice now, I see 104 different java files on my computer, some java 1.5 and others 1.6, all recently added. Everything else works on the computer, and I can surf eBay and other online sites freely. Limewire won't open even for the help box. I have an older system..new one 4-6 months away.
I'm running Win98SE 933 mhz, P-III, IE6.0, Cable modem.
'What to do? help please...

Try this:

1. Download the JRE offline installer for this version of Java.
Archive: Download Java 2 Platform Standard Edition (J2SE) 5.0 Update 11
After you've downloaded that installer, remove all the other Java versions on your computer. Now install the Java you've just downloaded. Restart your computer.

2. Reinstall LW. If you're using an older LW & have the installer saved...reinstall from there. If you're using the latest LW (4.14.10), download the installer from LW site & make sure to use the offline installer. When you click to download & the dialog box pops up, cancel that & use the option to download the offline installer.
Lime Wire » Download LimeWire

If it's still stuffed, delete LW's preferences folder when LW's properly closed. See point 3 here & also point 2 if you've used older versions of LW in the past (there could be a folder in either location).
Fixes for LimeWire
This will kill all of your settings within options, you'll have to go back through afterwards & reset things. If you're not sure of your settings, go through LW's tools > options & write them all down, so that you can reset things later.
