All files turned into exe

I downloaded a zip file that was somewhere around 200k-500kb and tried to open it from my downloads folder and recieved an error message saying "file is corrupt from transfer", so I deleted the file. Now when ever I try to open a file audio or video from my downloads folder or from limewire they all give me an error message saying "file is corrupt from transfer". In my downloads folder they are all still saved as .mpg and .mp3 files but in limewire all of my files have been moved to the programs section, they all say 408kb's and they are all listed as exe. (note did not happen to mov files & also files downloaded after the incident work fine). Is there a way to recover my old files???????? and even if not, do I need to be doing something to remove a virus from my computer?????
