Limewire killed my system...help (can't use Task Manager or open options)

My wife was downloading a song and it was not filed as corrupt or anything and has been checked by several scans. All of a sudden my computer reset, i am unable to get LimeWire to log off without forcing through a programs to stop. It will not uninstall completely and than won't reinstall calling the program corrupt. I have also lost all of my Notification area (task bar right side) They are empty boxes that i can access. I am unable to CTRL/ALT/DEL also and can not open any option menus in any programs includeing LimeWire. WFT do i do now? any help is appreciated. I have years of billing and work info on this computer and can't afford to lose it. thanks in advance

I have the exact same problem with an additional one called Sychost which i can't get rid of from the start-up list in msconfig it just keeps on reloading itself, have never had these problems before only since i downloaded Limewire yesterday & dowloaded a couple of music files, now even after countless scans by Norton & 3 spyware removal utilities i am at my wits end.

Even though i have un-installed Limewire that too keeps on loading itself on to my my screen.

Any help would be most appreciated.

yea i suddenly have the same problem as well..in my start up however, it says DW_Start. so i turn on my computer and im doing some stuff then all of a sudden limewire pops up...i close it, but in a few seconds it restarts again..its getting so anoyying so i had to uninstall it. My task manager works, but options opens up and disappears in a flash. so i cant use options either.:bangh:..i wouldve done system restore but for some reason when i went to go to so, it was turned off..no previous settings had been saved as a restore point..so yea im in pretty bad condition right now...id appreciate all the help i can get... thanks

this is a virus....search this board for the term and I'm sure you will find some valuable information...

Peerless April 6th, 2008 09:24 AM

question @ helpme87: are you getting a message similar to "task manager has been disabled by the admin"?

helpme87 April 6th, 2008 09:42 AM

I have and am having the same problems as the guy above. Option window pop up and disappear instantly. Also my task bar next to my clock is just a black empty box. I have uninstalled i think totally LimeWire but the other things still are not working.

What type of virus search? i have run my scan many times

worst case scenario: only a reformat and clean install will fix your problem...if this is the case then you have 2 obvious paths you can follow 1: backup all important data to CD/DVD or 2: buy another HDD and use it to install your OS on and keep the existent HDD to use as a slave for data (which of course means you can pull your important data off of it and move it directly to the new HDD)

Success guys :xirokrotima:

Found the answer in another thread =

Got rid of Norton, downloaded AVG free & bingo performed a full scan located 2 trojans including the main culprit Sychost & 1 virus then deleted the nasties & now my pc is back to normal :yahoo:

Got me beat how a free anti virus program can out perform a so-called top of the range product in Norton but it sure did.

Takes a while to go from 98% to finish so give it plenty of time.

but try AVG as well.
