Can't Change My Limewire Options

i'm having the problem where my limewire is opening on it's own, even after i shut it down. so i went to change my options, but the box won't open. every time i try to open my options, it looks like the box is going to open, but it disappears. i tried to get into the options menu by using the configure tab in the library, but it does the same thing. HELP!
I'm running windows xp, and limewire pro 4.12.3, DSL

Sounds like a virus to me. Check WARNING: Viruses on network you should be aware of! (click on blue link)

I got tired of the problem and just uninstalled limewire. going to reinstall it and see what happens. replies to my post would still be nice though, if anybody has any other suggestions. just in case it happens again, or anybody else has the same problem. thanx

limewire problem

Hi. I'm having the same problem. Uninstalling does'nt fix it.

Lord of the Rings July 20th, 2008 12:44 AM

Try deleting your LW Preferences folder whilst LW is closed; instructions here: Point #2 & 3 in Fixes for Limewire (sample image included at bottom of page.)

Upon restarting LW you will need to reset all options. Now the two to be wary of are:
1. make sure Tools > Options > System Tray is set to Shutdown Immediately.
2. make sure Tools > Options > Advanced > System Startup is not checked.

Something else that can cause problems is having too many incomplete files, especially if some of them are really fakes files which drives LW crazy, so try Tip: Purge the Downloads Queue! (click on blue link)

Oh .. also make sure there is no limewire file in the system start up folder or settings.
And make sure your Java is up to date & properly installed. Online installations with java are risky & known to cause problems. Also having older version Java can cause issues with the newer java.

Chiaira July 20th, 2008 11:29 PM

Same Problem Again

Limewire worked normal for a couple days, but the problem poped up again. Tried going back to the older version of java, deleting the hidden folder and incomplete files, but no luck so far. I've even reinstalled it just to make sure, going through all the steps again, making sure ALL files are gone before i reinstall limewire. But, when I am able to set-up my preferences again after deleting the hidden file, I'm not able to select some of the preferences. Example... I can browse and select which files to share, but not the check boxes below about sharing folders.
Anyways, it's weird. I'm not sure what's going on. Any other tips that might work??? I really like using Limewire!

With the option box that is not showing the buttons at bottom, try grabbing a corner of it & dragging it down. That is a problem that shows up occasionally for some users. ;)

Chiaira July 21st, 2008 04:42 AM

I can see everything, but i can't select it. when i click the box nothing happens like the option is frozen. i can see it, but i can't change it.

Lord of the Rings July 21st, 2008 04:54 AM

All I could really suggest is see Fixes for Limewire (click on blue link). I'm sure one of those option or more than one combined would fix it.

BTW if you have a lot of incomplete files, I would highly recommend Tip: Purge the Downloads Queue! (click on blue link) as your incomplete (particularly any fakes) might be causing your LW problems.

Fixes Not Working

There is no Administrator option  the only user is mine. I tried typing it in, but it just gave me an error:mad: Any ideas??? Other than that, none of the fixes worked. I even tried all options in my compatability settings:bangh:

Lord of the Rings July 21st, 2008 02:49 PM

Which version of Java were you running when LW was running fine?
Which version of Java are you running now? Are there any other versions of Java installed?

Was there any system or other program installations or updates you did just before this issue started happening?

Try these things:

1. Run this utility to clean your registry: Crap Cleaner

2. Tip: Purge the Downloads Queue! (click on blue link)

3. Defragment your drives. Make sure they are no more than 75% full if possible.

If still no good, can you post these details: System details - help us to help you (click on blue link) :)

BTW do a search of your computer, see if there's any other LW's on there.

Oh & this was was what i was trying to suggest before: still no luck but getting closer - Gnutella Forums

Chiaira July 21st, 2008 07:47 PM

I was running Limewire Pro 4.12(I think that's the one) and java 1.6 (I had my hard drive formated recently, but have had this computer for about a year). That was the only version of java installed after formating, and no updates were installed just before (or after) these problems started happening. I already have Crap Cleaner and I use Sympatico Security Manager for antivirus, firewall, spyware and disk defragmenter. I always clear my downloads before I exit limewire, and purge incomplete files on a regular basis. I've erased every trace of limewire from my hard drive. now the problem happens instantly when i install limewire, not like before when the problem took several hours to happen again.
Now I'm just trying to get the most recent limewire working(NOT the pro version) and I've downgraded my java to 5.11 using the offline installer as suggested.

*Windows XP home edition 2002 service pack 2
*My firewall is blocking limewire right now because of the issues I'm having, but before the problems started it was allowed access.
*Pentium 3 Processor, 803MHz, 384MB of RAM, 75GB hard drive
*For my internet, I have High Speed Internet from Bell Sympatico and my internet isn't shared. I don't have wireless internet, it's connected right to my computer from the router bell gave me to use.
*My test result said it worked:)

I'm not forgetting to hit apply either, the box simply won't appear for more than a fraction of a second. It's like it starts to come up, but then gets minimized somehow. I've tried to grab the box with my mouse, to make it appear or see if I can move it around the screen, but it disappears before I'm able to grab it. I've been using Limewire for at least 4 years, reinstalling every time I get a new computer or get my hard drive formated and I've never had a problem like this. I've been using computers for years, and I've never seen this problem before in a program. HELP!!!!:bangh::bangh::bangh::bangh::bangh::bangh: :bangh:

AVG Free AV has fixed this problem for some people. Give it a try & see whether it helps. Check the thread below & see if it sounds the same as your problem. There's a link within that thread for downloading AVG Free. Make sure to update AVG before you scan your computer.

Sounds like the same problem.

Looks like that's the same problem I'm having. gonna try avg free and see what happens. thanx:)

Chiaira July 22nd, 2008 07:13 AM

It's a virus

Thanks, I found the virus using AVG free edition. :xirokrotima:
**Be sure to update before scanning for the virus, or it won't find it.**
Same virus and file as the other post, but I had 3.:yikes:

C:\WINDOWS\Fonts\svchost.exe Trojan horse Dropper.Generic.VUZ
C:\WINDOWS\Fonts\svchost.exe(1592) Trojan horse Dropper.Generic.VUZ
C:\WINDOWS\Fonts\svchost.exe Torjan horse Dropper.Generic.VUZ

Even if u think ur computer is virus free, still try AVG free edition. I just tried it because I had tried everyting else and nothing worked so far. Not sure how I got the virus and why my antivirus didn't catch it, but there it was, three of them!! Thanks for the help :Smilywais: Hope this helps anybody else who has this problem.
Now I'm gonna re-install limewire and see what happens.

I have tried what you suggested but there is no changing of the size of the box and I cannot apply any changes. Can anybody help? Or should I get a bigger screen:laugh_2::laugh_2::laugh_2:?

Hi loueras,

Are you having the same problem as the OP, where LW keeps opening & LW's tools > options box keeps closing?

loueras February 25th, 2009 10:09 PM

No
My options dropdown box does'nt have any "apply" or similar boxes/buttons at the bottom to confirm the changes I've made. It appears to be too big for my screen/window and I cannot figure out how to make the box smaller to actually view these bottons. Can you help? Thanks

birdy February 25th, 2009 10:32 PM

See whether this thread helps: http://www.gnutellaforums.com/230100-post7.html

It's referring to boxes within the setup wizard, but hopefully the same thing will work for you:)

Chiaira April 19th, 2009 08:06 PM

Can u tell us more about your computer??
What O/S are you using?
What version of limewire?
Does this problem only happen when you use limewire? or are other programs affected too?
Did you recently install or upgrade a display driver or anything else?
Did you try uninstalling and reinstalling limewire?
And anything else you can think of that might help identify the problem, no matter how small the change.
THANKS:)
