sharing with portable device

So How is it that you transfer you music to portable devices???
My mp3 player is supported by windows media player and I also have a media converter for the mp3 player. But for some reason I can't find the music files within the media converter? Windows media player dose not support lime wires file format, or do they and I am just missing something????
