Configuring proxy?

Ok, i'm not really clear on proxy servers, but my connection is provided through my university - thats a proxy right?

so how do i know what type it is and how the *!@# do i configure it? i CANNOT get limewire to connect

and after trying every possible change in my firewall settings i've realised this is probably the problem so any advice would be soooo very helpful.
