Want to get limewire but worried about virus and spyware

I really want to use Limewire but I amworried about viruses and spyware. Is it really true that limewire is virus and spyware free?Is there anyway to check to make sure your not downloading anything bad? When I download a file does it come zipped so I can scan it?

wondering why July 18th, 2006 12:28 PM

The Limewire software is completely virus and spyware free...
You must relise that what you choose to download may not be, LW has no way in controlling what is being shared....
Take a look at this thread it will tell you what to stay away from
http://www.gnutellaforums.com/showthread.php?t=41432
Also read through the stickies at the beggining of the open discussion forum, they have lots of useful info in them.....;)

Have you ever gotten spyware or viruses and how long have you been using LW?I am also thinking about getting a mac, will you think that will be better.

wondering why July 18th, 2006 12:37 PM

No I haven't ever gotten a virus or spyware from using Limewire...
I have been using LW for just over a year now, when I first started out, I educated myself through this forum as to what to download and what to stay away from...
I never download zip files or exe or any type of program.....
When I download movies I always check them with Bitzi and I'm always aware of the file sizes....:)

shivy July 18th, 2006 12:42 PM

Yes I will obviuosly check out the file before I download and do all files come packed or only some files.I would like to scan it whiles its packed to make sure. Also who is bitzi,I plan on downloading movies too.WHats wrong with zip and exe files, what file types should I download?

wondering why July 18th, 2006 12:47 PM

Bitzi is great...check this thread it will tell you what it is and how to use it...

I wont download those sort of files as most of them contain viruses....
With movies I usually go with the AVI's and with music the MP3's, but learn the file sizes....;)

oh cool thanks,is it easy to download and configure and stuff, after I download does it automatically work?

wondering why July 18th, 2006 03:57 PM

When you have downloaded a movie and want to watch it on your comp, you will need to get the codecs for your selected player so it will work, or you can just download the VLC player as the codecs are already installed...
This thread will give you the links you need...

If you decide you want to burn a movie to disk so you can watch it on a dvd player you need a program that will convert your files and then burn them...I personally use http://www.dvdsanta.comfor this, but there are others to choose from...

With your MP3s you can burn them to disk also, there are many programs to do this also, I personally use itunes to do this....

Always remember to scan your download with your AV before opening them...
I hope this has been of some help.....:)

Limewire does have spyware

According to the Spyware info site, Limewire is "confirmed to have spyware or other unwanted parasites bundled into" it:

Actually it says "(The most current version of Limewire is reported to include
spyware. LimeWire 4.9.28 is clean. Older and newer version may not be.)".

No mention is made who "reported" that LimeWire includes spyware and it is
obvious no verification of this false report was attempted. Not only that, but
that web page hasn't been updated in a whole year and even then it says
right at the top of the page that it was outdated at the time.
