I downloaded a song on Limewire and I'm trying to place it on a webpage for background music. When I try to save the song so I can search for it later. When I try to save it, it says that it's saved as a .m3u but is downloaded as mp3. When I try to upload to the website it says that.m3u is invalid.
Help!!! I had a friend who put the song in his itunes and took it from there. I dont' have itunes. Any suggestions? Nancy |

An M3U file is not an actual media file. It is in reality a playlist format, one of the uses of which is to play an MP3 off the net without the MP3 itself being linked to through the browser for download:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/M3U : : : : To download the (most likely MP3) file that an M3U points to, open up the M3U file in a text editor such as Windows' Notepad, and copy and paste the address of the media file(s) into your browser or a download manager to download it on your computer.

What do you mean by opening in windows notepad? What I did is put it in a queue as if I was going to put it in a folder for my mp3 player. WHen I hit Save as is when I get that it's saved as a .m3u.
Could you give me a better explanattion? Sorry for confusion. Nancy |

Right-click the m3u file and choose Open with...., then choose the Notepad.
When the file has opened in Notepad you should see a webaddress where the real MP3 or WMV is hosted. Copy this web address and paste it into your browser address filed and click "Enter". That should bring you to the real mp3 file. However, if Notepad can't open the file (out of any reason) then I would try to copy the m3u file and paste it into another folder. Then go to this folder and change the ending ".m3u" to "mp3". That you can change this it might require to go to the folder, open the Folderr Option via Tools>View and click where it says "hide known file extensions (so that it is not marked). After you've done this you could try to open the file with the media player to see if it still works. Afterwards you could try to upload it again.

Thank you!! It didn't work with Notepad but I went to the folder, hid the extension and it worked.
Thanks again. Nancy |
