I suspect you are wary about doing all the OSX updates, as I see you are not running 10.4.8. Updating might cure the problem. It could well be a java problem, and up-grading / reinstalling java might be what is needed, and something that often helps is to do a safe boot, repair permissions, and then reboot. (Hold down shift key whilst rebooting, The comp will take longer to start but will  Run Disk utility>First Aid>repair permissions, and then reboot normally.
Let us know which model Mac you are using. If it is an older one this might be an issue
