Default Format Conversion - Help please

I have successfully downloaded a movie and copied it to a DVD but it wont play in my DVD player.

I assume it needs to be converted. Could anyone please advise on how I go about this ( for free would be nice if possible!).

Thanks for your help.

Ach mein Gott... newbies.... seriously.....

Use Windows Movie Maker. If you have winME, win2000, or winXP you should have it....
look for it on all programs....

then 'import into collections' > 'add to storyboard' > and 'save movie file'

the rest is self-explanatory....

Blunose...You need a software program that will convert and burn for you...There are 2 that have step by step walkthroughs that are used by members of these forums...Have a look at them and see what you think, let us know how you go....

hmm?... really? what version do you have? I got v5.1 (service pack 2)
[you probably go an outdated version]

in fact 'AVI' type files are the first in the import list...

btw: how'd you know it was an avi file in the first place?

The reasons a dvd might not play in your home set-top player is multiple:
* Burnt at too high a speed, __ * Your player doesn't support DVD R disks, __ * Your player only supports DVD-R or DVD+R but not both, __ * you encoded the video & audio at too high an overall bit rate (max. should be kept below 9 Mbps), __ * your settings for burning were inapproprate (Data disk instead of video dvd (UDF format)), __ * the program you used to convert did a horrible job, __ * the brand of dvd disk you used is cheap & unreliable, __ * some dvd players are brand specific & don't perform well if at all with some brands of dvd disks, __ * your burner doesn't properly support a particular brand of disk.

There's probably more possible reasons but these are the ones I can think of off the top of my head.

I actually said "let's say it's an AVI file"...Anyway onto Windows Movie Maker, I have the exact same version as you and I followed your instructions and imported an AVI movie I have on my computer and it created 487 frames and I'm not dragging them one by one onto the storyboard to find out at the end of it all it doesn't work....Are you seriously telling me you convert and burn your Movie files that you download from LW this way.. Windows Movie Maker is designed to give your home movies special effects, music and such....
