Searches do work better when your LW is connected properly to the network.

Your symptoms actually sound like you are connecting as an ultrapeer which is much much slower to connect than the usual Leaf mode. As an ultrapeer, you need to be connected to about 22 peers I think it is before searches will work properly & 26 to say you're fully connected turbo-charged out of 32. You can check your status via the menu bar -> Tools -> Advanced Tools ...

This will also tell you if you are firewalled and how many if any peers you are connected to.

If you were not connecting as an ultrapeer & it shows a firewall message, then I recommend looking at: http://www.gnutellaforums.com/connec...t-connect.html

BTW LPE works better after a clean install. (ie: removing any previous LW preferences, just keeping the downloads.dat file.)

Edit: oops I didn't realise birdy had replied. I was distracted for a while. lol :D

Hello. I have a problem now. :eek:i just discovered that i can't connect to the LPE. I can't get it to fully even start up. I had the 5.6.2. I have tried to redownload but I can't get that to go either:bangh::mad2:. Help please. Any clues ?

Thanks for the steer to the repair kit. My version had stopped working. Limewire ConnectFix 1.3 worked first time.

Try the connection fixes: http://www.gnutellaforums.com/connec...t-connect.html

If none of those work. Uninstall LPE, remove the LW preferences folder. Then re-install LPE. LPE works best with a clean installation. ;) Make sure you make a firewall exception for LW. :)

Edit: good timing lol .. we both posted same time David91. :D I won't say why, but the Mac connection-fix installer is actually better than the Windows one. :p Not a lot of difference though.

I followed the instructions and downloaded the fix but no joy - still does not connect. I am running Windows 7 and internet explorer 64 bit. :sos:

For Windows 7, you must set Java to Run as Administrator ! Otherwise it will have difficulties such as connection problems. I also incurred the same problem at one time.

Since LPE seems not to run with the newest Java 1.7 which I suspect is really a beta, it will probably be easiest for you to reinstall Java 1.6.

Right-click the Java 1.6 installer & choose 'Run as Administrator'. You may need to reboot after installing I'm not sure. Download the safer 'Offline' Java Installer For Windows: Java Downloads for All Operating Systems.

It would also not hurt to do the same for LPE, right-click the short-cut on desktop for LPE & choose Run as Admin. when you get to that point. ;)

Thanks Lord of the Rings. I can now connect and am happily downloading successfully where possible. I ignore the license pop-up and it seems to go ok. However I have downloaded some items which have informed me in an American accent that 'this is an illegal download' and directing me to a website where I can download for free legally. I think it is the newer stuff that it complains about: ie James Taylor ok - Rumer - not ok.

What is your experience or take on this?

Again thank you and thanks to Birdy also and all of you for your invaluable experience and guidance. It is much appreciated by all of us.

best regards

You will find quite a high percentage of spam files that are put up by the record companies as spoilers. There are also a significant number of malware files designed to infect your machine. You need to build up experience to find the "real" files and filter out the rest.

Thanks for the warning - I have downloaded 4 files and scanned them with AVG and they are all clean but I will stay alert.
