can't connect, connections screen blank

I am a new user and I can't search, it doesn't give me an error message it just doesn't sya anything. I am not connected and I can't, and my connections screen is totally blank. maybe I am firewalled...what do I do about this, I have never been firewalled before when I have done similar programs...I really have no idea what I am doing, if someone could help me it would be very appreciated.
