OK. I'm bewildered!

I previously said that I prefer to understand what and why I'm doing something. I don't understand but it is working now.

Here is a seriously abbreviated version of what I had previously done:
-installed various P2P & torrent programs - they wouldn't connect on the XP machine
-uninstalled both ZoneAlarm & AVG virus scanner - they still didn't work.
-reinstalled both ZoneAlarm & AVG virus scanner - they still didn't work

Here is what I just did:
-disabled ZoneAlarm (not uninstalled), tried BearShare - didn't work
-uninstalled BearShare 4.5.0.63, installed BearShare 5.2.5 - It WORKED!
-re-enabled ZoneAlarm - It still works!
-I checked the bittorrent client in Opera and it now works too!

It doesn't make any sense and I don't understand why but it is working.

BTW - Once it was working, I checked my event log and found one 4226 entry - (TCP/IP reached connection limit). I presume that I should use lvllord to increase the number of half open connections. What number would you recommend?

That thing defaults to 50 which is probably good enough. If you ever see it
again try 100. BearShare and BT won't need more than that. It can go up to
16 million but there's no point because nothing can go that fast without
crashing your router. ;]

The fact that the newer BearShare worked makes sense. We were still using
Win9x and XP SP1 back when we were testing BS 4.5 and the changes to
accommodate XP SP2 didn't come along until many months later.

Now that it is working try the b25 version with BearStart. There are several
reasons to prefer it over any of the newer versions.

Hi Arron,

I've done as you recommended (installed v 5.1.0b25, BearStart V2 & used lvllord to set half open connections to 50).

Everything is working perfectly!

In my search for information, I have followed your links and Googled many other sources. Everywhere I go, I find different forums and I find your posts helping other people! You are amazing! I always find it incredible that there are people like you who so selflessly offer their time and support to others.

You deserve a Hero Badge.

Thank-you VERY, VERY much!
