BS can't connect to Gnutella

my 2 home systems - XP home and Pro - used to run new BearFlix just fine until 2 days ago. Comcast digital through MS WiFi

Now neither one will connect. Host connections keep trying "connecting...", but never connect. Sometimes get "timed out" in red.

Suspect - the most recent MS security updates, which I loaded 2 days ago.

Everything in the firewall area looks OK according to your Help items.
Suspect- firewall instructions are for cable LAN, but I am on WiFi secure WPA

Pleae help if you can.

Thanks in advance

AaronWalkhouse October 22nd, 2007 12:34 AM

You can check your two suspects by uninstalling those updates and by deleting and recreating
your firewall rules. It is more likely that Comcast is blocking it, though, as they were caught
illegally interfering with P2P traffic recently and they probably think they can get away with it
because they haven't been charged with the crime or sued by their customers yet.

ursula October 22nd, 2007 03:52 AM

Is there some aspect of BearFlix that is illegal ?

AaronWalkhouse October 22nd, 2007 05:26 AM

Is there some aspect of BearShare or LimeWire that is illegal? BearFlix is just a crippled version
of BearShare which blocks everything other than video or picture files.

Illuminist October 22nd, 2007 10:38 AM

I was unable to to connect for a short while a few days ago...

...As for BearFlix... the lad and owner over at ePirate likes it and you think to yourself ''why!?'' just use the test and utility.

lexicon3232 October 22nd, 2007 06:21 PM

Aaron,
Thanks but no joy- still wont connect to hosts.
I also un-installed then installed the BS 5.0 beta from technutopia.
It worked "better" in the sense that it sometimes got new message "handshake" trying to connect. but still never actually resolved.
I'm stumped.

Try unzipping this into the C:\Program Files\BearShare Test\db folder:

Edit: Fresher connection cache can be found in this post: http://www.gnutellaforums.com/host-c...bearshare.html

Ay Dubya...

I don't think you picked up on the thrust of my query.

Musiclab flogs Bearflix... Musiclab = legal bullshˇt, right(ish) ?

And, just exactly how long a video file might one expect to D/L with Bearflucks ?

AaronWalkhouse October 24th, 2007 10:11 AM

It was once rumoured BearFlix only downloaded small videos.
I never bothered to check, because I don't care to use crippled software.

Cheeers To That File

daltonmerf October 29th, 2007 07:26 PM

Worked for me also(walkhouse your the man)

jamie0168 October 30th, 2007 04:52 PM

Ok, I'm retarded. I downloaded the file, saved it to my "downloads" folder, moved it to the Bearshare DB folder. And to unzip, does that mean to extract all? Because that's what my computer says. I don't have any experience with unzipping folders, lol. So, I tried to extract all the files from the folder. Well, I got a warning saying that "compressed (zipped) folders was unable to create the specified directory. Ensure that the directory does not already exist and that the path entered in valid." C:\Program Files\Bearshare\db\connect. So, I deleted the old "connect" file and tried again. It did the same thing. What wrong?

jamie0168 October 30th, 2007 05:00 PM

ok, nm, for some reason, I just had to manually browse to the same place. But, sadly, I still can't connect.:confused:
I don't get it. My vista firewall is off. I went in and turned my five firewalls off in Norton. Are there any other firewalls that I have to turn off in Norton besides those five in the advanced configuration window? What else am I missing?

Peerless October 30th, 2007 05:23 PM

5 firewalls in Norton's????

norton is THE firewall....go back into it and just delete those instances of BS....while BS is off of course...then start up BS and when Norton's pops up with the queries it gives, allow access....

Peerless October 30th, 2007 05:25 PM

d00d...you are at a University...I'm pretty sure said institution is blocking p2p traffic...perhaps a conversation with the appropriate people is in order to verify this...

jamie0168 October 30th, 2007 06:38 PM

Seriously? No, I'm positive that I've downloaded on my old version of bearshare on my old laptop just fine on this exact same network with no problems. What do you mean "delete those INSTANCES of BS"? "Nortons pops ups" You're really confusing me, lol.

Peerless October 31st, 2007 08:55 AM

I'm still using an ancient version of Norton's, so I can't say exactly what anything new looks like...in my version when you go into the program control area there is a 'rule' for programs that access the internet....simply highlight all instances of BS, then choose to remove them...then start up BS again and let new rules be created (controlled by your responses to the queries norton's will give)

Pickle November 7th, 2007 12:32 AM

hey I'm new and I came here to get the file hehe sorry :)

anyways yay! it works! but downloads became slow... be4 it took me just 3 minutes to dwnld now it takes 20 + minutes

sb4100 November 14th, 2007 12:06 PM

WOW brilliant worked fine. many thanks

firewalls

hi, im new with LW, sick of wyzo ,u torrent etc.need all the help i can get.

understand that windows firewall allows lw to transfer files and is automatically an exception to the wall.

i m not using norton but avast home edition, any other firewalls i might have missed, there's also windows defender with vista.

second question- how do you make a RANDOM PORT selection on LW?

appreciate any feedback
thanks

Peerless November 22nd, 2007 06:49 AM

LW....hmmmm....sounds familiar...what I've found to be the truly rocking gnutella client is this: http://www.gnutellaforums.com/open-d...sabotaged.html

Problem solved! Thanks Aaron.

icqknickfan January 21st, 2008 12:37 PM

hi -
does it matter where you extract the connect.zip file to ? my bearshare is installed on G:\ not C:\

Peerless January 21st, 2008 03:05 PM

the connect.txt file goes in a specific place in the BearShare Test directory in program files...the db folder if I remember correctly....doesn't matter where you extract it to, but it must be placed in that location to do anything

AaronWalkhouse April 28th, 2008 05:34 PM

It's always the /db/ folder inside the one where BearShare was installed.

alex_capc May 22nd, 2008 09:16 AM

Thanks alot

It does works! Thx:idea:

DarkNexxus June 26th, 2008 11:34 PM

Thanks Aaron. I just updated my file (again). :)

elia95ultras August 23rd, 2008 08:56 AM

i have made what you say but anywhere i can't connect.can you help me please

thedunepariah August 23rd, 2008 02:16 PM

still having troubles

I have downloaded and extracted the connect.zip files to the Bearshare db, but still when I load BearShare and type in a file to search, my search says "Queued - stablizing connections." After a minute or so, I get an error message that says that I am not able to connect to the gnutella network.

Just to make sure - are there only TWO files in the connect.zip file? I ask because I currently only have available the evaluation version for WinZip and am seeing two files after unzipping... I'm wondering if that makes a difference or if I need the full version.

I also just moved into a new apartment and am wondering if it is possibly some sort of network administration block on my computer.

I've used BearShare for years and have never had a problem until right now. I'd appreciate any help, thanks.

AaronWalkhouse August 26th, 2008 03:13 AM

Try a fresher one: http://www3.telus.net/Aaron_Walkhouse/connect.zip

thedunepariah August 26th, 2008 09:38 PM

got the same result -said "connections stabilizing" for a minute or so, and then I got a message saying I can't connect to the gnutella network. Is there something else I could try?

AaronWalkhouse August 26th, 2008 09:43 PM

Get BearDiag and run it.

i attempted to d/l that zipped file but it said it was corrupt, can someone email it to me or post it again??? the rulez quite clearly state NO EMAILS...either learn to read or pay attention

AaronWalkhouse March 22nd, 2009 05:28 PM

I just checked the one on my site and it's still good.

http://www3.telus.net/Aaron_Walkhouse/connect.zip

I'll replace that attachment right now. Thanks for the report.

firegods11 April 8th, 2009 06:02 PM

Just downloaded Bearflix, and I can't connect. I tried turning off the firewall and all that and I seem not be able to connect at all with anything I do... Any ideas?

AaronWalkhouse April 8th, 2009 06:57 PM

Have you tried connect.zip? Has any P2P program worked for you before?

firegods11 April 9th, 2009 04:28 PM

ya it said the file was invalid or corrupted. I also downloaded AOL AIM and it couldn't connect so I'm thinking it might be something with the network... I'm not sure tho

AaronWalkhouse April 9th, 2009 05:09 PM

It isn't corrupted. Did you use this link?
http://www3.telus.net/Aaron_Walkhouse/connect.zip

If your unzip software still says connect.zip is corrupted which version is it?

Since it might be a network problem, better use BearDiag and take the problem to the
main BearShare support forum, Technutopia.

I've tried the connect files given.
It is not working for me.
BearShare worked very well for us for a long time but now, it quitted the work.
BS. Inc turned into pay per file system and now it is selling the files.
The old P2P system is totally useless and new connect.txt files seem not working very well.
I've noticed that no mods are interesting on BS title anymore.

It is an old religion like Napster. May rest in peace.

AaronWalkhouse May 16th, 2009 03:28 PM

The gnutella network is still alive and well, with millions of users and many different
programs. You can ignore the fake BearShare because it doesn't use gnutella. If your
BearShare is having problems, maybe you need to [Configure your router for BearShare].
