I think so. I haven't found anyone else using it so far, though. I hope there is some kind of symbol or icon.

finding chattable people

Yes, right now you just have to right click and see if the "Chat with host" option pops up. You can do this from search results, uploads, or downloads.

I agree that some sort of icon or other indication is needed to find chattable people. No promisies, but we'll almost certainly do that for the next release.

Regarding the Mac installer, I would suspect that people are attempting to use the installer that does not contain a JVM even though they do not already have the JVM present on their machines.

The primary LimeWire 1.7 installer for the Mac includes an updated MRJ, version 2.2.5, that has important improvements, but that is also a bit larger than previous versions. This pushed the installer size up to about 11MB. We decided to give people the option to use that installer without the MRJ in case they already had it installed. This installer, however, will not work if they do not already have the MRJ. I am not positive what will happen in this case, but it is quite likely that the scenario that you described would occur.

That said, we also did upgrade the Mac installer to use a new version of InstallAnywhere from ZeroG (version 4.01 as opposed to 3.5). This should, however, be more stable than previous versions. The previous installer had problems on some systems, but this one should be more successful.

Do you know if people are having problems with the installer that includes the MRJ, the installer without the MRJ, or both?

Thanks.

Mac Installer

I am not sure if they were using the new MRJ, an old version, or none at all. This question has popped up several times on the board before, and every time, the question has gone unanswered. It came to my attention again when this post appeared.

All of the people who posted were unregistered, so I doubt we'll be able to contact them directly. ¿Maybe we could post a reply to the thread asking them to give us info about their MRJ? If they do visit the boards frequently, then they might see it and respond with the info you need to discern the cause of the problem. Just a suggestion, though. :-)

Sorry, I don't mean to be ignorant, but i'm running9.2, i'm assuming the runtime for java is up to date. I guess depending on what system people are running will determine if things are cool or not. Is that correct. (or if they use the software update application.) I downloaded the version not needing an MRJ update and it works great for me. (for what that's worth)

Thank you for your response. Hopefully, we'll be able to figure out this problem soon. If you don't mind, I'd like to aska a few questions:

Have you used program that would have already installed an updated version of MRJ? Do both 1.6 and 1.7 beta behave the same way on your system?

Thanks again! :-)

I posted to the thread that you mentioned. It looks like most of the people posting were probably using the 1.6d installer from the dates of their posts. We have definitely had problems with those InstallAnywhere 3.5 installers on different Mac configurations, but we were hoping that the IA 4.01 version (the version we're using in LimeWire 1.7) would work a little bit better.

The tricky part here is that we're really doing the simplest install possible, so if the installer fails, there's really not much we can do about it except wait until InstallAnywhere releases an updated version (which they will be doing fairly shortly).

Hopefully, however, people will not have problems with the new installer.

I have yet to have any problems installing any version of Limewire. 1.7 seems to run a little smoother on my computer. With 1.6d, I had some problems with 5-10 second freezes where everything would stop for a minute. After boosting the memory to 40k, it did seem to help the situation. I have yet to encounter any freezes with 1.7.

That's great to hear. We fixed a problem in previous versions of LimeWire where we were doing unnecessary dns lookups on new incoming connections, which could freeze on the Mac in the manner you specified.

We changes this code, so hopefully it will not occur in the future. It can still freeze initially on startup because there are some required dns lookups that we have to do, but other than that it should be fixed. Please let us know if you see freezing occurring again in the middle of a LimeWire session.
