Firewall

Hi all;
So I finally got rid of the firewall in Limewire. What's to prevent someone from accessing my shared files along with a virus or worm? Is that possible and how do I protect myself?

You just never know where I'll show up with a problem.
I'm new to all forums, I don't even know how to "chat". So when I come upon an opportunity to post a question I don't pay attention to where I am probably because I'm lost. I'll get the hang of this sooner or later. In the meantime, cut me some slack.
