 Firstly need to modify iTunes settings so it 'Adds' the files to its own library. Secondly, modify LW's settings to auto-transfer song-files to iTunes.

Yes it will, go to LW's menu bar, Tools -> Options -> My Files, near bottom is Configure option for iTunes.
 This is in LimeWire 5, not LW 4 which did not have the transfer ability, only a LW playlist option.
