56K Modem connection freezes randomly

I currently use Limewire 3.4.7 on OSX 10.1.5 with a 56K Modem. It worked well for several weeks but recently, Limewire would randomly freeze my internet connection. OSX would still recognise that the connection was active, but I basically couldn't access anything via my browser, email, ftp, etc.

This problem only arises when I use either Aquisition or Limewire but not with any other network apps. I've reinstalled Limewire, and disabled sharing and this seems to help initially, but the problem resurfaces after a few days. As a result, I'm only able to use Limewire for about 20 minutes before it freezes my connection and I have to redial.

From browsing this forum, a few others share the same problem, however I haven't found a solution for it yet. Can someone please help?

Well, disable ultrapeer (although I highly doubt you are one).

Perhaps this is some sort of bizare conflict with your firewall? Do you have one? If so, open up port 6346. If not, open up port 6346 in the OS X personal firewall which can be found in the sharing subsection of system preferences.

What did you change or alter on your computer when you noticed this problem?

Same problem

Ultrapeer has been disabled all along and no, I don't use a personal firewall. I've had a look at the Sharing section of the System Preferences but am not sure what you mean about opening port 6346, as there are no port options.

I haven't changed any settings nor installed any apps that resulted in this problem. The strange thing is that whenever I uninstall/reinstall Limewire, it works fine for a few sessions, then the problem creeps back in.

When I listen to the signal (via my phone) during one of these 'freezes' it sounds like the signal has entered a loop with a repeating signal being received.
