 I'm running OS 10.3.2
and LimeWire Pro 3.8.7 when entering a search for programs that I've searched for in the past with great results, I now receive no results? I've atteched a screen shot for you.

et voilą March 14th, 2004 12:22 PM

 quit and relaunch?

stief March 14th, 2004 01:24 PM

also, click the "Any Type" radio button and retype your search term. Your connections look fine.

ebene1073 March 14th, 2004 03:13 PM

search trouble

 Well, I tried both and neigther worked, I also tried searched for audio and it wouldent even search then I tried Images and it searched but had no results

stief March 14th, 2004 03:31 PM

using "any type", what happens ifyou type in, say, something like"shakespeare" or "serial"?

ebene1073 March 14th, 2004 03:38 PM

I tried both, it does a complete search but with no results.

stief March 14th, 2004 03:47 PM

weird. Would you go to the View menu, and show->Connections. I'm guessing that pane will show you connected as a leaft with 4 connections. Correct?

To clarify...
Is the LW Pro 3.8.7 a new install ?

And, were your past good results achieved using the same install of 3.8.7 ?

See, it is not really clear if you are suffering from some change that has occured pertaining to your existing - old reliable - installation of 3.8.7...

or

Problems that are now happening subsequent to you changing/updating versions or re-installing 3.8.7

In other words, are you comparing 'old' with 'new', or 'old' (existing) with 'old' ?

ebene1073 March 14th, 2004 03:54 PM

seven connections

ebene1073 March 14th, 2004 04:00 PM

ursula, I am having these problems with a new clean install of LW 3.8.7. I was having these problems with by older install of 3.8.7 as well... prior to these problems I was having no problem with my older install then all of a sudden I have problems so I deleted and downloaded 3.8.7 agan and reinstalled.

stief March 14th, 2004 04:07 PM

OK--you're well connected.

Try downloading this magnet MagBay.jpg (it's just a 2MB sailboat picture), and see if it shows in your downloads pane. I'm starting to think you are getting responses but they aren't drawing on your screen for some strange reason.

ebene1073 March 14th, 2004 04:13 PM

I went to the link but it's not obvious what you want me to download?

stief March 14th, 2004 04:16 PM

sorry--typing too quickly! The magbay.jpg sailboat picture.

and that would be where exactly on this page?

ebene1073 March 14th, 2004 04:28 PM

got it

ebene1073 March 14th, 2004 04:30 PM

got it... no problem

stief March 14th, 2004 04:38 PM

Yes--you have good bandwidth too (56KB). Did it display in your downloads properly? If so, control-click on the download to try to browse my computer. That should at least show that your results pane can/can't display results. I'd try to browse you, but your browse is disabled (Chat turned off?).

ebene1073 March 14th, 2004 04:44 PM

my chat is on (cabel connection) my option to chat with you is greyed out so I can't select it.

stief March 14th, 2004 05:01 PM

Something odd there too.

Try once more to download the magnet (you'll probably have to delete it first), then while it is downloading try to control click on the download and choose "browse host"

In the meantime, go to LimeWire->Preferences, enable Chat, and hit the Apply button

Next, go to Bug Reports->View example and select all (command A works), then Command -C to copy the results.

Email them to me (you can use the email button in my posts) and I'll see if I can see anything

ebene1073 March 14th, 2004 05:13 PM

still wont let me chat?

stief March 14th, 2004 05:24 PM

Looks like you can't accept incoming connections (like chat).

You still should have been able to Browse Host. Were you able to watch the progress of the download ?

Anyway, to check if your firewall is blocking incoming gnutella traffic, go to Apple Menu->System Preferences->Sharing->Firewall->New, then scroll through the list until you can choose "Gnutella/LimeWire (6346)"

When checked, that will allow your computer to receive incoming connections. Your downloads and uploads should be much better too.

(Still, that shouldn't stop you from getting search results)

Are you tired of this yet?

Cheers

ebene1073 March 14th, 2004 05:37 PM

Thanks for all your timely help.... I'm soooo tired of this as well.
Did all you suggested and then quit and relaunched LW only to recieve the same dissapointment. We don't need to solve this tonight.
:(
Thanks a million!

stief March 14th, 2004 05:48 PM

Sorry we couldn't find a quick fix.

Sometime, consider doing the regular safe boot/repair permissions .

The other setting you can try is the checkbox in the Preferences->Advanced->Force IP

cheers.

ebene1073 March 15th, 2004 09:19 PM

Ok... this may help, I don't understand any of it of course but you might. I launched LW tonight and a window poped up notifying me of a internal error, so I selected revew and this is what I got.

Hi
I can't read bug reports very well, but it does show up as #6 on the bug tracking page
http://bugs.limewire.com/bugs/home.jsp
All the others like it come from Panther users, (and one LINUX), so it's not just your setup. 15 others reported it too. If you happened to notice what steps trigger it, do post those details.

Hope you were able to get browse host working, and the safe boot/permissions fixed something.

I'll check back tomorrow.

Cheers

ebene1073 March 16th, 2004 07:26 AM

I still have no search results and the bug report pops up upon launching LW.

trevornd March 16th, 2004 12:41 PM

no search results

I am having the same problem. 10.3.2 and the last two versions of Limewire, plenty of network activity but no search results:(

ebene1073 March 16th, 2004 01:03 PM

Lime Wire support told me to up date to 10.3.3, delete limewire and all related files and ailias, reboot computer and reinstall LW. I did and I am still having the same problem????????????

trevornd March 16th, 2004 01:26 PM

no search results

I have done all suggested too and still the same result

stief March 16th, 2004 02:49 PM

Hi again--and welcome too Trevor.

ebene, Pro support is right. Since something is wrong, starting fresh with the all the updates is a good idea.

Did you both deinstall the old LimeWire folders in the preferences (click on the desktop, and use the Finder's Find command to search for any file containing the term "limew"). This will find all the old preferences so you can move/trash them and start from scratch again. This means you'll need to reset all your preferences again, but that is also good.

I still don't know if you repaired permissions after doing a safe boot. Please clarify.

rkapsi March 16th, 2004 03:34 PM

ebene1073, please open Terminal.app enter the following command(s) (Copy & Paste):

ls -l /Library/Java/Extensions
ls -l ~/Library/Java/Extensions

Let me know what it says (ls = list i.e. it lists the directory contents).

ebene1073 March 16th, 2004 07:52 PM

stief, I did all you mentioned above although I'm not sure what you mean by repare permissions.

sberlin March 16th, 2004 08:00 PM

ebene,

Please try the commands that rkapsi posted. The problem could be caused by conflicting packages, causing LimeWire to load a wrong component (and causing lots of other things to go wrong).

Thanks.

ebene1073 March 16th, 2004 08:05 PM

rkapsi, I'm not familiar with how to run comands in Terminal and are

ls -l /Library/Java/Extensions
ls -l ~/Library/Java/Extensions

the comands you want me to run?

rkapsi March 17th, 2004 12:13 AM

Hi ebene,

yes that are the commands. You can copy & paste them to the Terminal. The Input/Output looks like this:

Code:

Last login: Wed Mar 17 09:12:57 on ttyp2
Welcome to Darwin!
CodeBook:~ roger$ ls -l /Library/Java/Extensions/
CodeBook:~ roger$ ls -l ~/Library/Java/Extensions/
ls: /Users/roger/Library/Java/Extensions/: No such file or directory
CodeBook:~ roger$

ebene1073 March 17th, 2004 07:16 AM

what do I paste it on to? When I launch terminal, all that pops up is this (see picture).

forgot to attach pict.... here it is

rkapsi March 17th, 2004 08:03 AM

Hi ebene,

uuugh this looks weird! Can't you resize it? I can't even set mine to that size. The Terminal should look like this:

http://www.kapsi.de/files/ebene1073/terminal.png

Have you noticed other irregularities with your installation? There's maybe something broken. Never mind! Lets make it manually. Open a new Finder window and browse to the directory as shown on this picture (/Library/Java/Extensions)

http://www.kapsi.de/files/ebene1073/extensions.png

Is the Extensions directory empty like on this picture? As next click onto the house and then Library. Is there a Java directory?

Petti March 17th, 2004 08:37 AM

I am having the same problem

Hi. I've been following your thread. I started Limewire Basic this morning, as I always do with no problems. It reported some pop up window of a bug & told me to reinstall Limewire. So I did a search for Limewire on my Harddrive, trashed all remnants of it, and went online to reinstall Limewire Basic for Mac OSX. I was able to download my favorite theme. Then I went to "Audio" & tried a general search for something everyone has to see if it was working- I typed in under "Artist", the word "Beatles". It wouldn't let me search. The I tried search all types for "Beatles". It appeared to be searching, but came up with nothing. I rebooted my computer. It is still not working. Something is wrong today. I have no Java folder in my "house" icon, but I do have one in my hard disc, with no extensions. Can anyone help?

ebene1073 March 17th, 2004 12:07 PM

rkapsi,
my java/extensions folder is empty just like yours.

rkapsi March 18th, 2004 11:56 AM

Hi ebene,

sorry for the delay. I must admit I have no idea what's wrong with your system. I had the same idea like sberlin but your Extensions directory is empty (i.e. there are no conflicting packages).

The only advise I can give you at the moment is: check your system and watch for anomalies like the "tiny" Terminal window. I've never seen (or heard of ) a such effect. The smallest window size I can set is:

http://www.kapsi.de/files/ebene1073/termsmall.png

stief March 18th, 2004 04:00 PM

Hi again ebene (and welcome Petti)

Here are the links for Safe Boot and Repair Permissions (they're also in the Tips and Tricks Forum).

Mac OS X 10.2, 10.3: How to start in Safe Mode

Repairing Permissions

Another idea to check if the problem is somewhere in your Home setup or preferences is to create a new Admin user, and install LimeWire there. This will be as if you'd never installed LimeWire before.

The OSX help menu has the instructions (just paste "Adding a user account to your computer" into the Finder's Help window).

The new user, will have its own password, Home Folder and prefs, which will give you the closest to a fresh start without doing a system reinstall (and it's easily deleted from Accounts afterwards).

If the probelm repeats here too, then you'll have eliminated the user setup as the problem. Post back--

Sure is good that Roger and Sam, who understand coding, are aware of the situation (thanks guys for taking the time).

ebene1073 March 20th, 2004 05:41 PM

stief,

OK, so this is what I've tried from you last suggestion. I created and installed LW in a new user account and have the same problem.

- rkapsi, I launched terminal in the new user account and it opened up like it's supposed to, I switched back to my account and launched it again to have that supper minni window open.

ebene1073 March 20th, 2004 06:07 PM

Just figured out my terminal prob.
I went to apple support on line and found Article ID:25730. it turnes out that Terminal needs Apple's Monaco font. If that font is disabled or missing, the Terminal window will be really small and unusable.

stief March 20th, 2004 08:23 PM

hi ebene

thanks for the tip and ref to the terminal problem.

So--since a new user has the same problem, at least we know the problem is probably in the system, not the user setup.

rkapsi and sberlin will know more about the java pieces required, but I don't know which java pieces (or fonts?) are required to draw the results. Hmmm--have you tried switching to a different theme (from the View Menu), and resizing each of the three panels of the search pane?

There were some problems with java updates on OS 10.3 (see http://developer.apple.com/technotes/tn2002/tn2099.html). You may want to try the test in terminal
java -version
and see if you get the "hot spot error" mentioned in the article.
Anyway, a java reinstall shouldn't hurt. Here's the link http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=120309
