Limewire unexpectedly quits

Basicly LW unexpectedly quits randomly i have not been able to link it to anything
i am running OS 10.3.2
this has happened when there are no other programs running it happens most when it is on screensaver but not always

can anyone help me?

stief October 29th, 2004 06:12 AM

Can you run System Preferences->Software Update? Currently 10.3 is at 10.3.5

Follow that with a safe boot (hold down the shift key on a system restart), repair permissions using Disk Utility, and restart again.

Ratman October 29th, 2004 06:31 AM

i just checked again and found that i was looking at the wrong number i am definatly running 10.3.5 and have been for a while

i also repaired permissions just a short while ago (bout a week) the problem has been occuring efore and ater that

Lord of the Rings October 29th, 2004 06:33 AM

A down & under mun. lol Screensavers were notorious for causing problems on macs in the past. But for OSX I'm not sure. Personally I can't afford to have mine set to auto start b/c of video processing I do. So if I leave my comp, I turn the monitor off.
Make sure you have the most recent version of Java. Restart you comp doing a Safe start & repair permissions using Disk Utility. It's generally wise to repair permissions after installing new softw. See: http://www.gnutellaforums.com/showth...6094#post96094 (permissions)

http://www.gnutellaforums.com/showth...3462#post93462

Are you attempting to use LW in the Classic environment? Not very wise to. How much ram do you have? Unfortunately, java for Mac is not very ram efficient & arguably has a bit of a memory leak.

Lord of the Rings October 29th, 2004 06:34 AM

Oh how many threads have you got going here, lol. I've combined them!

Ratman October 29th, 2004 06:46 AM

i have the latest version of java
and i have 256 built in and 512 extra ram

Ratman October 29th, 2004 06:58 AM

no not trying to use LW in Classic
and i checked (ran software update) and i have Java 1.4.2 installed just going to repair the permissions again then ill get back to you

by the way
G4 power book
1.33 Ghz
256 RAM built in and 512 extra

stief October 29th, 2004 07:01 AM

Follow LOTR's links to get info on the safe boot.

If you open Console (it's in your Utilities Folder), the next time LW crashes you should see an error report there. Either message one of us with the log, or just post the first few lines here.

btw--your machine should have logged all those previous crashes: you can view them with Console's File->Open Quickly and look for CrashReporter

Ratman October 29th, 2004 07:06 AM

I don't know what this means but i hope you do

Lord of the Rings October 30th, 2004 01:52 AM

When you installed OSX did you install the BSD package?

Ratman October 30th, 2004 02:33 AM

yup

stief October 30th, 2004 02:44 AM

Looks like you are getting a java crash
Exception: EXC_BAD_ACCESS (0x0001)
Codes: KERN_PROTECTION_FAILURE (0x0002) at 0xf0d3efe0

(which isn't really a LimeWire crash). I'm not sure of this, and will check with some experts this weekend.

In the meantime, did you do the safe boot, and do you have more than 2 GB of free disk space?

The reason I ask is there's something with LW and Apple's java that causes the Virtual Memory to keep growing and using up lots of disk space.

Ratman October 30th, 2004 02:58 AM

yes and yes

Lord of the Rings October 30th, 2004 03:24 AM

Are you using the english/international version of LW? Did you try the beta 4.1.8 (english installer not international)?

Depending on your state, don't forget to change your clock forward tonight. lol

Ratman October 30th, 2004 03:38 AM

i am using version 4.1.8 english downloaded from mac update

btw it crashed just a few minutes ago did you want me to send you the log if so how much of it?

stief October 30th, 2004 07:17 AM

sure . . . from a few lines before "Exception: EXC_BAD_ACCESS" (or whatever the message is).

The lines probably start with the data and time of the current crash.

Ratman October 30th, 2004 05:15 PM

i am looking in the console log for LW and i can't find "Exception: EXC_BAD_ACCESS" nor can i find a date and time
not sure if i am looking in the right place
should i be looking in the crash report that OSX generates as their bug report to apple?

Lord of the Rings October 30th, 2004 05:18 PM

Do a search of your HDD for crash & you'll find a list of them. Then choose the most recent. Also tell us what the majority of crash reports you have are called.

Ratman October 30th, 2004 05:27 PM

the most numerous crash was "JavaNativeCrash_pid****.log"
and the most recent was "limewire.crash.log"
which part of it do you want

there are 54 of the "JavaNativeCrash_pid****.log" in the list

Lord of the Rings October 30th, 2004 05:38 PM

That seems to back up what I said to you earlier, pm. Since LW runs on Java. If Java is failing, then naturally LW will follow it if gets that far. Dare I say it & Stief may disagree here, but a clean re-install may be in need. I didn't dare suggest this 2 days ago although I thought it. I suspect there's something wrong with your Java installation. When installing/updating try to refrain from using other apps - I know how tempting it can be. But wait on Stief's response 1st! I'm no OSX expert!

stief October 30th, 2004 05:44 PM

whoa!--54! That's way too many!

Try reinstalling java http://www.apple.com/support/downloa...update142.html

btw--here's a shot of how to get at the logs from Console's file menu [removed--too big :)]

Ratman October 30th, 2004 05:51 PM

i'm going to try reinstalling java but what is the best way to do it
do i need to delete any thing before i do
and do i need to do it in a safe boot
etc

btw thanks for the help guys i do appreciate it

stief October 30th, 2004 06:02 PM

The update says it will completely remove/overwrite older stuff, so no special procedures are required.

you know, if you have the hardware test discs that came with your machine, checking the RAM might be a good idea too.

Ratman October 30th, 2004 06:17 PM

where i found the crash report was a little different to yours
i don't know if that makes a difference but heres a shot of it

well i can't seem to attach a file cos the file i have is too big
btw how many Kb is 102400 bytes any way

I thought the max size for an attachment was 100k which is 100,000 bytes.

stief October 30th, 2004 06:29 PM

the logs are either for the system Library or the user Library (~/Library).

bytes/1024=kilobytes. (just divide by 1000 to get a ballpark size)

btw if you click on the edit buttons on the extra posts, you can get at the delete checkbox and button.

Ratman October 30th, 2004 06:34 PM

I don't seem to have hardware test discs i only have software install 1 and 2
i also just reinstalled java 1.4.2 and am about to restart the computer back in five

Lord of the Rings October 30th, 2004 06:52 PM

Only 2 disks? Mine came in 4 disks! Plus I have a hardware test that came with the comp. Yo may hav hidden it away somewhere thinking it was not important.

Ratman October 30th, 2004 08:13 PM

nah i checked everything the only discs i got were the ones mentioned earlier

and seperatly i got the applecare protection plan which i have just installed and run(tech tool) and everything seems to be fine although i can't boot off that cd so it can't do the volume structure

Have you tried DiskWarrior, it's designed for checking & repairing directories & volume structure.

Ratman November 2nd, 2004 04:23 AM

where would i find that program i searched on macupdate but didn't find it

Lord of the Rings November 2nd, 2004 05:21 AM

It's not a free/shareware utility. You should be able to get it at any apple outlet. See http://www.alsoft.com/DiskWarrior/ Personally I use both DW & Norton Utilities 8 (extremely important to keep Norton totally up to date for OSX!) Both share same & different abilities. There's other options like TechTool Pro instead of Norton but there's some differences in xtra functions.

dean9000 November 6th, 2004 03:21 AM

Solution?

I've also just been experiencing the Limewire "unexpectedly quit" problem - but I've fixed it!
The problem was caused when I turned off all of my fonts in font book (i was trying to fix a font conflict).
Without the fonts loaded, Java does the "unexpectedly quit" act. And because Limewire is a Java app, it also quits.
By just turning my fonts back on Java and Limewire are working again.
So check all your system fonts are loaded - this could be a simple solution.

Cheers,
deano

stief November 6th, 2004 04:15 AM

Nice tip! If there's a missing font problem, I think the next LW already has put in a font check.

(@LOTR: btw, system reinstalls are pretty drastic/last resorts. Intermediary step would be to install in a new admin user account to isolate a home account problem).

Excellent tip thanks! I'll adjust anywhere I find I've suggested the other.
