Problems Installing version 4.8.1 Hi all, Maybe I'm not posting in the right place, if so my apologies, first time user... Been a happy user of Limewire for the last 3 years at least... Recently, I upgraded to version 4.8.1 and all was well for about a week. Yesterday, I couldn't launch Limewire (bouncing Icon then disapearing). I'm on an iMac OS X 10.3.8... Tried different diagnostics/repairs to no avail. Rest of my computer works fine... So I deleted all pertaining to Limewire except my shared file that I put in another file. Re-downloaded and re-installed Limewire. The installer reported that all was OK, but it's not since I still have the bouncing icon 8 -10 times then nothing... Have deleted/re-installed 5 times but still no-go... Anyone with similar problems or ideas for solution? Is there a known problem with the downloaded package? |
If you had have gone to the OSX section of the LW section you would have seen a Sticky with solutions to your problem. See icon bouncing in Dock (click on link) |
Hi Lord of the rings, I did find the related thread but I do have the BSD installed and I did follow the suggestions to change the faulty line in the plist file but it was already OK (string Limewire string). Did not find anything with prelude... I also have Java 1.4.2 version 2 installed as I saw that the Java version could be causing problems. Recently, I found this in console.log. Looks like a Virtual Memory problem. I do have some problems with bad RAM. Maybe this is the cause. Will look further into that. If there's any other suggestions, thanks in advance !!! 4/12/05 10:38 Emplacement: /Library/Logs/Console/eric/console.log Contenu: Mac OS X Version 10.3.8 (Build 7U16) 2005-04-10 19:24:46 +0200 Error occurred during initialization of VM java/lang/NoClassDefFoundError: java/lang/Object Error occurred during initialization of VM java/lang/NoClassDefFoundError: java/lang/Object Installing LimeWire 4.8.1. Please see my link above. That is not the sticky I was refering to. |
OK, will go through the list and post back... |
no luck... Hi again, Well, no luck... As per list: -1, updated to Java 1.4.2v2 but was already there. -2, Disk Warriored, repaired disk with install CD, repaired permissions and ran fsck... -3, uninstalled/re-installed: no-go -4, installed LW Beta: no-go -5, won't install in new user or no-go also -6, installed LW 4.8.0: no-go -7, For now, re-installing OSX is not an option as all other applications work seemingly normally... Howerver, I'm starting to suspect an ill Installer but I can't find a standalone version at Apple to replace mine... Will search this further. -8, JUM version : no-go... Maybe other suggestions from you guys... Thanks |
No do step 1 again. But view bottom of this page 1st: Can't launch LW: Bouncing in Dock (click on link) Need to remove the Java4.2Update2.package |
Tried it. I trashed the Java142Update2.pkg and downloaded the standalone from Apple but still got an already installed message. I didn't empty the trash though while doing the Java install... Would that be of consequence? On another note, I got a kind of opened orange box as icon instead of your icon for Java142Update2.pkg...Same difference ?? |
1 Attachment(s) Trying to forward picture of "receipts" Here it is... |
In list mode it looks very different than when viewing it in icon mode which can happen with many icons. Heard of this before but can't remember of find the post that deals with it. Perhaps wait for Stief or et voilà or someone else to arrive. I guess you could try to reboot before reinstalling. |
Salut Eric You don't have to empty the trash--just moving the java receipts temporarily to the desktop will do. I'm not sure which receipt needs to be moved: try moving all java receipts out first, then put them back if the reinstall goes properly. After messing with receipts though, you'll need to Repair Permissions. |
Java in receipts Salut Stief, Ok, I will try removing all Java packages from receipts, and re-install them from Apple. In the meantime, I've also cleaned out the Virtual Memory swap files to see if that does something... Will post back. BTW, Living in France but originally from Montreal |
Maybe I'm not doing something right. I've dragged 2 install packages that have Java ( Java.pkg + Java142Update2.pkg) to the desktop as was suggested. When installing the newelly downloaded Java package, I still get from Installer that "this volume does not contain any Java version that needs to be updated" (Freely translated from french...) So I'm at a loss to replace the old with the new... any other ideas...??? |
That's the same error message I saw (in English) when reinstalling java recently, but moving all java receipts to the desktop allowed the reinstall, so I'm not sure what's going on . . . perhaps a shutdown for 2 minutes and then a restart will help. I'm assuming you're downloading this java update: http://www.apple.com/support/downloa...update142.html oops--that update doesn't mention French (I don't know if it matters). Perhaps Software Update will work. |
Hi again Stief, yes, it is that update that I'm trying to re-install... I really don't know what's going on... Did you remove any other Java files appart from the ones in Receipts ?? I guess I'll try the gurus over at Apple's discussion forum concerning this issue. Software update doesn't help... Must be something else left over that's preventing all of this. I've just tried one more time to re-install LW but with no more succes... :-(( Thanks again for your suggestions, I'll come back here to see if anything new comes up and post if I manage to fix this up. ciao |
I just removed the receipts. hmmm--see if Jen-Uwe's CVS build of LW works. http://www.mager.org/LimeWire/LimeWire.html --it uses a different installer (just the drag and drop). |
JUM version Tried the JUM version with the drag & drop... Guess what...Like the others, no-go... Got a thread going on Apple's Discussion Forum. We'll see if that brings up something... Salut... |
OK--that confirms it is indeed a java problem. Btw--you can open the Console (In your Utilities Folder), and an error message should show in Console's window when LW wont start. |
Salut Stief, I did post in the beginning of this thread a report from console but this is the last one from this morning: console.log: Taille: 41459 octets Dernière modification: 4/13/05 9:30 Emplacement: /Library/Logs/Console/eric/console.log Contenu: Mac OS X Version 10.3.8 (Build 7U16) 2005-04-13 09:29:38 +0200 Error occurred during initialization of VM java/lang/NoClassDefFoundError: java/lang/Object So there's the Java line and also the Virtual Memory error... If someone can make sense of this report... There was talk of French vs English earlier, I'll reset my iMac for English and see if that does anything... |
Reset in English but still no-go and with the same console report except that it tells me twice about the error in initializing VM and the Java stuff... Here it is one more time: Size: 51823 bytes Last Modified: 4/13/05 9:51 Location: /Library/Logs/Console/eric/console.log Contents: Mac OS X Version 10.3.8 (Build 7U16) 2005-04-13 09:29:38 +0200 Error occurred during initialization of VM java/lang/NoClassDefFoundError: java/lang/Object Error occurred during initialization of VM java/lang/NoClassDefFoundError: java/lang/Object This is driving me crazy... |
Salut Eric. I'm stumped: your java looks to be pooched, and yet it won't allow a reinstall! Maybe this old and outdated Apple technote for fixing a java install will help with some other ideas http://developer.apple.com/technotes/tn2002/tn2099.html It does mention "navigate to /System/Library/Frameworks/JavaVM.framework/Resources/ Move the version.plist file to the Trash" Maybe the version.plist needs to be trashed too? (sorry about the console idea--I'd forgotten about your earlier post) |
Java re-install Salut encore Stief, You're a bit like me, never in bed late at night...??? Thanks for the link, I'll see what can be done even if it's an out dated procedure. I'll try to find that plist file and fiddle around that. I just posted on Apple the same console log to see if anybody there as an other idea or can confirm the Java thing... Salut |
My thoughts are to install the 10.3.8 Combo. Then try again with LW ... if still no go, then try again with the Java installer. |
10.3.8 Hi again, I do have the 10.3.8 combo installed since quite a while... Waiting to see if anyone at Apple will reply to my Java problem... |
I see there's no answer yet, but following some links led to http://developer.apple.com/java/faq/ I couldn't find any better suggestions than "Archive and Install," even after finding the thread at http://lists.apple.com/archives/java.../msg00798.html (I think you can login there). Sorry. Hope your evening works out (it's morning here). |
java woes... Well, still no answer from the Apple Forum... I did go there quite a few times and always got suggestions/answers relatively quickly. This is the first time no one has anything to say. Not even "It can't be done"... From the links you suggested, this one says that Java1.4.2 can't be removed: Mac OS X Panther initially shipped with installations of J2SE 1.3.1 and 1.4.1. Java 1.4.2 Update 2 is now available for Mac OS X Panther v10.3.4 and later, based on the J2SE 1.4.2_05 SDK. It includes improved behavior for applets in Safari, and increased stability for desktop Java applications, including all of the improvements in 1.4.2 Update 1. Please note that 1.4.2 Update 2 completely replaces the current Java 1.4 implementation on Panther systems (1.4.1 or 1.4.2), and is not removable once installed. The other post talks about trying to fool the system "receipts" and re-installing. Well I've got three choices. 1- Delete Java completely (empty trash) and try again to re-install (got it on a back up anyway) 2- Archive & Install and re-install LW 3- Go without LW until the next version (I have a feeling it won't work since the previous versions didn't) So I'll wait a bit in case something else comes up and if it doesn't, well, I'll have to go with re-installing OSX... Will post back with any results See you all and thanks !!! |
Hmmm--why not try and see if other java apps work? http://www.broadbandreports.com/stest uses a java applet, Azureus runs on java, and maybe there are apps you could try. Does the java web start program, for example (in the Utilities folder) work? |
Java test... Salut Stief, BAM !!! you're on to something. 1- Applet Launcher, Input Method Hotkey, Java 1.4.2 Plugin Settings and Java Web Start.... don't start !!!!! 2- Java 1.3.1 Plugin Settings works..... (what in hell does it do or what can I do with it ???) 3- Testing the Java Applets with the link you provided, when I click on verify your Java version, I get a page with the coffee cup a couple of seconds worth, the HD crunching then Safari quits... Tried it with IE, and It worked but told me as a result that: JVM check passed, using 1.3.1 by Apple computer, inc. No mention of 1.4.2 !!! So I think my 1.4.2v2 is good for the dogs... What do you think ??? |
Looks like Archive and Install I'm afraid. (: Oh well--at least now you know your system needs it anyways. |
Bummer !!! Yeah, I guess I don't have a choice. I would of preffered to just replace the Java package but eh, the problem seems found and will be resolved (not tonite cause I'm beat now). Will just visit Apple a short while to report what was found here (great, great help from you guys, specially you Stief, thanks !!!) and once done, (the archive & install) will post back here for results on the LW install... I have a feeling all will go OK now. Good night all, see you soon Eric |
Bonne chance! Je sais peu. Mais conseil que j'ai donné mais ai ignoré. lol :D http://users.pandora.be/eforum/emoti.../happy/028.gif http://users.pandora.be/eforum/emoti.../happy/019.gif |
look here for more solutions to reinstall the Java 1.4.2Update2 http://www.gnutellaforums.com/showth...threadid=36268 |
Qu'est-ce que tu dis LODR? :D |
Salut tout le monde, Stief, I've read your link but I'm snowed in at work since Friday as I travel by motorcycle. So as soon as summer comes by again, probably in July..., I'll look again into that Java issue and report how it goes so it can maybe help someone else here. Keep up the good work !! A plus |
FIXED !!!!! Salut tout le monde, Hi all, FIXED !!! All I did was install the Security Update 2005-002.... et voilà !!! Ta-dam, bam... all is working fine as usual. I'm a happy man again, and thanks to all for your help, this forum is great because of the people here. See ya around Eric |
I think what annoys me about this thread is that you never tried my 1st suggestion of installing the Java using the standalne java which no doubt would have fixed your problem. Instead we've got a 3 page thread with images blah blah Quote:
|
Couldn't install Java 1.4.2v2 LOTR, why would you be annoyed??. Because I haven't followed YOUR advise?? . I DID. Or is it because it's a 3 page thread ??? I didn't know there was a limit on thread size... Maybe you didn't read all my following posts. I DID TRY to RE-INSTALL the Java 1.4.2v2 update but it CAN'T be done. This is what Apple has to say about this: Mac OS X Panther initially shipped with installations of J2SE 1.3.1 and 1.4.1. Even if you remove the package from the "receipts" in "Library", trash it, and download the thing from Apple, the installer will stop and tell you it's already there.... Feel free and be my guest to try it yourself... I had a back-up of it on a Firewire drive so I could put it back in place afterward. Read my newer thread, it should please you since it's short... I only mention the solution... And I don't usually Blah-blah around... Still, I wish you a nice day |
Read very very carefully: Can't launch LW: Bouncing in Dock (click on link) particularly at the bottom of the post. This has been discussed on the forum many times before. You could have installed the Java .. not using Softw Update ... using the Standalone Java & by removing the Java receipt. But you read it all oh you knew it all already & had Stief running around in circles not knowing what was happening b/c you hadn't read the thread after all. Wasting members & moderators time & wasting space on the forum is a concern for me yes. This forum server doesn't have unlimited space & speed & was forced to upgrade just months ago but is still limited. Quote:
