Wait!!

Wait! I'm having the same problem, how did you solve it? I have a Mac OSX and I'm trying to download Limewire basic, so I go through the whole website (get basic, download for Mac OSX), and it downloads and pops up on my desktop as LimeWireSoftOSX but when I click on it it tries to open in excell for some reason, no installation option ever comes up, and it ends up quitting excell before anything happens. I used to have LimeWire and this all worked out fine but I had to delete it off my computer, now I can't get it back!! I've been trying to fix this four HOURS. HELP!!!

Only A Hobo August 19th, 2005 01:52 AM

hmm......... you are saying that you get an icon on your desktop entitled LimeWireSoftOSX [Is there an extention??? and what does it look like...??It shoud be a harddrive on a sheet of curled up paper] What you should have is one called LimeWireOSX.dmg and this should appear in your download manager window when you select the save location.

I have just downaded the file myself wih no problems.

My first action would be to Delete that file. D/l a fresh copy from

http://www.limewire.com/english/cont...loadfree.shtml

( not from a link you may have used)

Can you try Ctrl/clicking it >open with DiscImageMounter .. which should be the default for that file.

Also

Is this your firsttime with LW??

Did you get it from www.limewire.com?

And did you pay for it? and are you on OSX or 9/Classic and did you D/L the correct one?

If you sort it out PLEASE come back and tell us wow you did it :)

mafdet22 August 23rd, 2005 07:15 AM

yes, this is my exact problem too! I have both the .dmg and the soft. I know the .dmg is the one I want, but how were you able to finally open/run it?

Lord of the Rings August 23rd, 2005 07:22 AM

This is generally a browser issue. Explorer & Netscape don't handle dmg files very well. So poorly in fact that you probably have an incomplete dmg. If you re-downld it using Safari then the file will be a little larger in size & should mount without problems. If need be, drag & drop the dmg onto Disk Copy to mount it (not double-click it.) To find Disk Copy, go to menu bar & select Go>Utilities & you'll find it in there.

LimeWireSoftOSX
Sounds like a scam version! As Only A Hobo suggested, only get LW from the "official" LW site: http://www.limewire.com/english/content/download.shtml

mafdet22 August 23rd, 2005 08:25 AM

hi,

yeah, I did get it from the official site. It was a browser issue though, thanks so much! I'm now up and running, getting some Dexter Gordon as we speak!

Thanks!

Lord of the Rings August 28th, 2005 08:27 PM

Take the advice & use Safari instead. Safari comes with OSX! You'll find it in your Applications folder.

Youngg September 2nd, 2005 12:15 AM

For the information of all, the same thing happens with Mozilla Firefox.

The oly browser I could get work was Safari

Good luck.:)

DMG problems

I'm having the same problem-- I've just upgraded to OS X (10.1.2)-- I have been using Limewire happily for a year or so but just tried to download the newer version for OS X-- after a few aborted tries (where it only partially downloaded a couple of times, but since I'm on dial-up even that took ages) I downloaded the whole thing, but when I double-click I get an error message saying it "cannot be mounted." This is the second time I tried to download it-- the first time it seemed to think it was a Quicktime file. Doesn't anybody have it archived as just a StuffIt file? Thanks for any advice.

Only A Hobo September 3rd, 2005 04:47 PM

You might find there is a bit of a problem with the early OSX systems. more can be found if you lok through the other posts.

...... but the file you have downloaded should say LimeWireOSX.dmg, If it says anything else my first hought would be you are not downloading it with Safari, but you will have seen that in the thread above. dmg files should open with disk image mounter at least on my OSX they do .. I really cannot remember OSX 10.1.2 very well, or if I ever used it! any way his might help a little!

Lord of the Rings September 3rd, 2005 09:49 PM

You just updated to 10.1.2 from what? I think the last update for 10.1 is 10.1.5 which you should update to! I'm also aware the very 1st Safari version had some bugs in it. But Safari is the recommended browser to use for downlding LW for OSX. It means you have downlded an incomplete dmg & OSX doesn't recognise what it is. eg: say the downld size should be 5.5 MB, yours is probably a little smaller at 5.3 MB or something (I've just taken those figures outta my head as an example!) This issue also happened to me.

luiz September 4th, 2005 03:22 PM

Yes, the file does say Limewire OSX.dmg, and yes, I downloaded it from the actual Limewire site. I just upgraded from v. 9.2. I don't seem to have Safari on my computer (which came loaded with 9.2 and X-- I've been running 9.2 until now though), so I can't use it to download or open anything. This seems to be the case with all .DMG files, not just Limewire-- Disk Mounter doesn't recognize them or says it can't mount them. This is making me kind of crazy-- all the utilities and apps I have are for older Macs, but now I can't upgrade them since I can't open the new versions! Argh.

Lord of the Rings September 4th, 2005 04:38 PM

command (apply key) & F & type in Safari & you should find it. If not, then you only did a partial install of OSX. You can downld Safari from here http://www.apple.com/lae/safari/ & upgrade here http://www.apple.com/macosx/features/safari/

Downloading as Excel file

I had this problem too - from the official Limewire site until I swapped from IE to Safari.

jessdrpepper2000 December 10th, 2005 08:51 PM

hey i just figured it out
just change the file name- add a ".dmg" to the endof it, and it will change from the microsoft file into what it shouldlook like
yes!!!

That's not a bad idea but not the end solution for everybody. Some browsers don't downld the file properly & you end up with an incomplete file (the size a little smaller than it should be.) I use Netscape & am very wary of downlding dmg's with it. Internet Explorer also suffers similar problems. For safety I always use Safari. I can't speak properly for Firefox as I found it doesn't run properly on my system anyway (very slow ... takes up the whole window, etc.) & I can't remember whether I was able to downld dmg's with it or not.

I downloaded lime wire(basic version) for Mac OS X (10.4.8) but I can't open the file. It keeps opening up the installer. I can't tell if you solved this problem in other posts. Can you help me out?

Lord of the Rings December 31st, 2006 12:55 AM

Which browser did you use to download LimeWire? The 1st thing to do is use Safari to download it with.

limbo28 July 25th, 2007 02:59 AM

yeah me too... i'm using OSX v.10.4.9 and whenever I press the LimeWire icon, which looks sort of like a white hard drive, it just goes to the installer again and again. I used Safari too...so....what now?
