HOW TO FIX: problems with new versions of OSX / firewall / launch

For those who are struggling with the minefield of solutions to various start up problems with new versions of OSX & LimeWire I was at my wits end when I finally tried absolutely every solution I could find and this worked for me:

1. Make sure you have the latest verion of Java. It's not as easy as it sounds to locate as there are so many updates and add-ons about so use this link:

http://www.apple.com/support/downloa...2release2.html

2. Make sure you have your firewall ON (see system preferences>sharing). where it says allow, go to NEW. Gnuttella WONT be in the drop down list on new Macs so from the drop down select other, and next to TCP & UDP numbers put 6346 and description, LimeWire.

3. Then, and this is the one that stumped me, restart in safe mode and repair permissions. (To do this hold down the SHIFT key immediately after the computer restarts & keep held down until you see the apple icon and the whirling cog. Then let go shift and you will get a password request for safe mode. Once up and running on the title bar click Go>Utilities>Disk Utility and on the first aid tab click 'Repair Permissions'. Then restart your computer.

MY COMPUTER WAS 2 HOURS OLD WHEN I TRIED AND FAILED TO DOWNLOAD THE NEW VERSION OF LimeWire AND I THOUGHT THERE WAS NO WAY THIS COULD BE MY PROBLEM BUT IT WORKED.

I'm not taking credit for the solution which I got from Lord Of The Rings post, it was just really hard to find so I'm hoping this will help people.

Good Luck

I Tried exactly what you did - No go!

This did not work for me at all.

Lord of the Rings November 5th, 2005 04:55 AM

That's because you're using Tiger not Panther. The same principle should apply if the problems started after updating your OS or Java. But you'd need the Tiger version of Java.

Anyse November 5th, 2005 05:44 AM

Java

I do have the newest version of Java for Tiger.

Lord of the Rings November 5th, 2005 05:52 AM

I think you're missing the point of this thread. This thread is re: people who can't launch LW after having updated their OS via apple's Softw Update program. Installing online can result in incomplete/corrupt installations or else, apple's online java installation has bugs. That's why for this particular type of problem, it's recommended to re-install Java using the "Offline" installer. This does not apply to connection problems but installation problems. Check the stickies for LW bouncing in dock to see what I mean. Since I'm a Panther user, I can't verify that the same problems occur in Tiger or that the same solutions apply. But chances are that they do. I'm aware of it fixing at least one person's problems in Tiger after giving them the link to the Tiger Java installer.

Anyse November 5th, 2005 06:05 AM

Java

Yes, I did use the off line installer of Java right off. I have destroyed alll preferences twice per each installation of even the new build that you referred to me. I have done EVERYTHING as instructed.

I notice a very large number of threads and messages regarding this firwalll problem and know that I am not alone!

Should I not be able to get mine to work by Friday, November 11, I will ask for a refund of payment for a non-working product. I have used Liemwire over a year with NO problems whatsoever and I know that it is at your end that it does not work properly. I hope that you can fet this bug fixed by Friday.

This is not Limewire. This is a public forum that caters for many gnutella programs & we are simply volunteers that help out on the forum. The forum site is not owned or run by Limewire or any other gnutella client program. Thus, such problems & demands should be put to LW's technical & sales support. All advice we offer is based on personal experience & from what we've learnt from helping others on the forum. :) We aren't experts! (or I'm certainly not.) lol :D

Panther users: Here's something I totally forgot all about: LW on OSX.3.9 fixed :0) (click on link)

problems launching LimeWire

Download and reinstalling Java seemed to do the trick. I agree, it seems almost trivial, but I've just upgraded to Tiger, and had to upgrade TechTool and Cocktail, run them, then download the Java update, as well as all the steps in amyturtle's post. That seemed to work for me.

OSX upgrade problems with java

I have had a with LW not working after upgrading my OSX to 10.4.6. I tried all the alleged fixes I could find on the LW site but to no avail.

Eventually I downloaded "Java131and142Release2.dmg" from the apple site and this fixed it immediately without have to do a safe start.

Recent connectivity problem on Apple Mac

I am experiencing difficulty in connecting to LW recently.
I'm running OSX 10.4 and have the latest version of JAVA (Java131and142Release2.dmg).
My problem is that when I launch LW (v.10.4.9) the front-end window appears but the softward sticks in the mode "trying to connect to the network".
This is a recent phenonomen for me; didn't have any connectivity problems beforehand.
I have read the advice from Amyturtle and set up LW in the firewall as per the advice there.
Any further advice?

momfig July 15th, 2006 08:21 PM

I am a new user of LW and have done all of the above things. LW downloaded and I can do searches, but on the bottom of it's window, it say's that it detects a firewall. I did the changes metioned above and added LM to me firewall list and it has a check mark by it. Any idea what to do next? I am a mom trying to set this up for my son to use ( me to ) and he is getting impatiant. Please help!

Lord of the Rings July 15th, 2006 09:21 PM

I only sometimes use the OSX firewall. :D If you temporarily turn the OSX firewall off & still have a firewall indication, then the firewall is most likely due to your modem/router. Most high speed modems & routers have internal NAT firewalls. If your connection device has UPnP ability, then make sure this is enabled because LW is UPnP capable (UPnP means LW can request a port being opened for it by the device whilst LW is open.)

If your device doesn't support UPnP, then you may need to forward a port. More details in sections 2 & 3 here Connection problems? Check here first! (click on link)

Do this simple test for us. Using your browser go here: http://www3.limewire.com:6346/ The page should say 'Your test worked!'. What happens when you go there? If you received a blank page, then it sounds like your connection device is at fault. You'll definitely need to see details in above paragraph. ;)

problems downloading

thanks for the info- I followed the instructions for my firewall set up and did the test you indicated. It said that the test worked. In LW I no longer have a firewall detected. So I did a new search, selected a song from the search list and selected download, but nothing happened. How do I find out if I set something up wrong? I can search for songs, but nothing downloads for me.

Lord of the Rings July 16th, 2006 05:25 AM

1. Check License requirement (click on link) & make appropriate changes to settings. ;)

2. There are fake results being spammed for copyright files. Noticeable by receiving perhaps 100 hosts for one file, 99 for the next, etc. Instead, choose those with perhaps 10 or 20 or so hosts from under the # column of the search results. ;)

momfig July 16th, 2006 09:40 AM

Thanks for getting back to me. I went to the site you indicated and under searching I have checked to let me know if a license is required. i also did the bug report and it says "false". Now when I open LW the fire wall warning is on again. I went to sharing - firewall - and I have G/LW selected.
Also, I was reading your other postings and you say that LW Pro is only 18.88. I just payed 24.44 to allcoolmusic.com. Have I been scammed? If I have, maybe that is why I am having so many problems.

Lord of the Rings July 16th, 2006 09:58 AM

Oops! Yes, that is a well known scam site; Known Scam Sites (click on link). For tips, see the rest of that thread. Especially the last few pages. Also see get your $$$ BACK!!! (music members) which has more tips about getting your money back.

Can you tell me what brand & model of modem/router you have?

momfig July 16th, 2006 10:35 AM

Thanks again for the info. I called my cc company and they said that I have not been cahred yet, but that I need to give them a phone # for All Cool Music to be able to cancel. I told them that I would try to get one. I emailed them, but i have a feeling that I will not be hearing back from them. Can you tell me how to get the corrrupted LW off of my mac? Can i just trash the whole file?

Lord of the Rings July 16th, 2006 10:44 AM

Yes trash the LW program folder! Also ... delete the LW Preferences folder found here: /Users/your_username/Library/Preferences/LimeWire

BTW get LW Basic first ... if you like it & can sort your issues out then later consider getting pro. Basic is free: http://www.limewire.com/english/content/download.shtml

BTW can you tell me about the question I asked above about your connection device?

momfig July 16th, 2006 10:47 AM

Why do you want this info

momfig July 16th, 2006 11:06 AM

I have an Apple INternal 56K modem (v.90)

Lord of the Rings July 16th, 2006 11:56 AM

K thanks. That means any firewall problem is either your OSX firewall or your ISP. Double-check your firewall settings.

But then again, dial up modems can be a bit stuffy at times with LW. It can sometimes take time to get connected properly.
I used dial up with LW for 3 years before I upgraded slightly. :D (bottom end adsl broadband speed but unlimited upload & downld quantities.)

momfig July 16th, 2006 01:42 PM

Thanks

Thanks again - sorry about not getting the info to you sooner. I have been dealing with this problem for two days and am very frustrated only to find out that I have been scammed. You have been very heplful. Thanks
I did check my firewall settings and I have it on and G/LW picked.
I told my son we are just going to use the iTunes music store for him to buy music. I am afraid that if I limit him to copyrited material only on LW he won't be able to get what he wants(new songs).

Lord of the Rings July 16th, 2006 02:00 PM

It just takes skill nowadays to recognise the dud search results. Pity bitzi doesn't have more music content as it would be very handy. You can still get such files.

Don't worry I know what frustration on dial up is like ... & when I was running LW on dial up, I was using a G3 in OS 8.5 with an obsolete version of Java. :D So that was frustrating in itself. lol :D

momfig July 16th, 2006 04:08 PM

Thanks again - if I try LW again, I will probable visiting with you again. I hope i learned enough. I will let you know how I come out.

Someday bye-bye dial up

Help Me>>>>

I installed Limewire for OS/X with no problem. The problem comes when I try to install. The box comes up to install and starts me out in the 'introduction'. When I click on "Continue" it get's stuck and doesn't do anything and I have to 'force quit' the installation process. I can't get the program installed...

any suggestions???

Trying to install LW on Intel Mac OSX 10.4.7......

I have the same problem when I try to install LW Pro. I started the installation as per LW's instruction and clicked on the OSX option, the download seemed ok but the installation sticks with the coloured wheel symbol. I too have too force quit. I am just wondering whether using an Intel based Mac is the problem and LW's programming hasn't caught up yet? I have come across this alot with other downloads where the program is clearly not yet compatible with the new Intel Mac. The basic LW worked beautifully, so I'm probably wrong; also I am almost completely computer illiterate, hence me using Mac for the last 10 yrs or so… things don’t often go wrong! Can anyone help? Many thanks….

amyturtle May 8th, 2007 06:57 AM

This all worked for me before

All of a sudden limewire pro just 'unexpectedly quits' at startup

have tried EVERTHING I can find on the forums to fix it but nothing works

feel like crying - why does this happen?? :(

Lord of the Rings May 8th, 2007 11:27 AM

1. What I'd suggest is SAFE Boot & Repair Permissions

2. Delete the LW Prefs folder found here: /Users/your_username/Library/Preferences/LimeWire

* If that doesn't fix it, create a new virgin account. Then try opening LW from that account. If it doesn't work, then it looks like probably a problem with the java. I think there was a reasonably recent Panther security update (I rarely use Panther now) which may have mucked up the Java. Else something else has affected it.

System Preferences -> Accounts -> click the padlock & then put in your password in the window that appears. You will then see option to add or remove accounts. Press the + to create a new account & name it something like Test. A window will open giving you options to name the account, a password, etc. After doing that, log out, then log into the new account & try to run LW.

If LW doesn't work then it looks like a re-installation of Java is needed (question is which one.) Let us know how you go. ;)
