cant open limewire

hey hope someone can help me...
I use to have limewire then when i did an upgrade for OS X limewire stopped working. When I tried to re-install it would not let me. I have about 20gig left on harddrive.

I have upgraded java, made sure file sharing is on in system prefs, re-started in safe mode and all the stuff that has worked for other users. When I try to install to hard drive it says "cannot install on this volume (null)"
I dont know what this means as I am basically computer illiterate. PLEASE HELP:confused:

Someone else had a similar problem but were using a G3 or something. What model computer do you have? Which OSX version are you running now? I presume you have a dual startup disk right? OS 9 & OSX. Make sure Classic environment is CLOSED before you try to install LW. Command-Option-ESC will bring up a window that shows which programs are running & whether you're running Classic. If you are, force-quit it.

BTW cannot install on this volume - generally means you're lacking permissions to install on that volume.

ummm Its an emac and i bought it in 2003, so it might be a g3. I am running OS X 10.3.9

Ok thanks. emac ... go to the apple icon in the far top left hand corner, click it, then choose About this computer. It will tell you more details about your computer.

Did you reformat your computer before installing OSX?

annie21sydney July 6th, 2006 06:00 AM

i only reformatted my comp yesterday, so yes it was after installing OSX Machine Model: eMac
CPU Type: PowerPC G4 (3.3)
Number Of CPUs: 1
CPU Speed: 1 GHz
L2 Cache (per CPU): 256 KB
Memory: 512 MB
Bus Speed: 133 MHz
Boot ROM Version: 4.6.4f1

Specifics look fine!

When you try to install it, are you choosing the location or does it find the location itself?

annie21sydney July 6th, 2006 06:05 AM

it only has the one location to choose from which is my hard drive

annie21sydney July 6th, 2006 06:06 AM

thank you so much for helping me by the way

Go to your HDD, Library -> Open up the Receipts folder. See if you can find install limewire.pkg there. Receipts folder sample image If you can, delete it & try to install again.

annie21sydney July 6th, 2006 06:13 AM

ok, i deleted the limewire.pkg and re-installed which it let me do....but when i open the limewire icon it bounces then disappears

Lord of the Rings July 6th, 2006 06:16 AM

Well that's a start. :D The answer is actually within that thread link I gave you. Chances are it will be Java. But the question is which Java to reinstall. Installing Java over the net can cause problems which is why we often suggest to reinstall it using the "Offline" standalone installer. Check step 1 at the top of that page.

Here's another option: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301380

i re-installed java and also followed what the page (you gave me the link for) told me to do at the terminal and the icon still bounces at the bottom before disappearing

Hmm it's annoying. I've had it happen but not with LW. For many people it tends to happen after OS updates. Well ... I guess there's the option of reinstalling the OS updates. This is going to be hit & miss if you're willing:

1. See QuickTime 7.0.4 bug stops LimeWire from opening!

2. Security Update

3. Java update fixer

4. 10.3.9 Combo installer

5. If all else fails, try using the Jum build which is a custom beta version of LW; try the nightly build! No installation necessary!

thank you so much, it started to work after the securtiy update when I DIDNT restart the computer afterwards. Not sure why, but hey its working so I am not asking questions. Thank you once again :-)
