cannot install limewire

running OS 10.4.11

when i install limewire and open it i get:

"This application requires Java 1.6 or later, but only the following Java versions are installed: 1.5.0, 1.4.2, 1.5, 1.4. Updating to a newer version of Mac OS X may resolve this."

when i download java release 6 for 10.4, it will not let me select a designation saying......."your computer does not need this update"

when i download version 4.18.8 for OSX tiger, it tells me there is nothing to install when i try to install.

can anyone help me?

thank you

john

LW 5 will only run using Java 1.6. That means only mac osx intel users running leopard 10.5 can run the beta 5. If you have an earlier osx then you are limited. With OSX 10.4 you are limited to LW 4.18. Only mac intel users can use LW 5 because Java 1.6 for mac is in 64 bit technology.

Please do NOT double-post, we are not blind. We do see all posts. duh ! (another who scrolled down from the forum rules staring them in the face & refused to read them before posting. That means the forum rules stared you in the face at least 3 times before posting.)

You will see from the LW download page only Leopard users are shown. Get your version from here http://www.limewire.com/download/oldversion.php

thank you for your quick response.

tried to download 4.18, but as i mentioned in my post i was not successful.

i DOUBLE POSTED in error. please forgive me.

Lord of the Rings January 30th, 2009 11:58 AM

I suspect you missed my later edit, I edited in where to get 4.18 ;)

I just sent a message to LW to ask them to change the wording to show only leopard intel users are able to use LW 5.

Other mac users need to click on the older version link. :)

jpm January 30th, 2009 12:15 PM

again.

thank you for your assistance.

unfortunately this is the link i mentioned in my post. i have watched the download more closely and noticed it is complete in less than 1 second.

when i install i get as far as picking destination, this 'install' and thin i get
'you cannot continue. there is nothing to install'.

its probably my fate to not use limewire.

Go to your OSX disk drive, open it then Library folder & Receipts folder. Remove the LW receipt file by trashing it. Then try installing again. Examples here Receipts folder sample image, sorry old examples.

jpm January 30th, 2009 12:33 PM

ok.

that worked.

thanks again

Exactly the same problem as John (nothing to install)

I've been looking all day for this solution. I'm having EXACTLY the same problem as John. I downloaded yesterday LW5 and then realized it was for Leopard users. I uninstalled it with Zapper and made a search to ensure that I had no other LW files.

I have checked the receipts and the preferences. (Found nothing)
I uninstalled and then reinstalled the pkg opening it with Pacifist (as read in another forum)

I still get the same problem "nothing to install".

I'm using MacBookPro, 10.4.11, 2.2.Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo

Please help!!!

Thanks in advance,

Maria

Not sure why you needed the utilities. I have an install package for LW yet I'm running LW 4.x & leopard on an intel mac.

You realise don't you you could install leopard & thus install Java 6 so you could run LW 5.
To be honest you are not missing a dramatic amount. The interface is quite different & some nice changes, but they have removed so many of the advanced features it seems like it's not meant for someone who uses the program like i do.

OSX -> Library -> Receipts

Arrange the folder alphabetically & look under i for install. ;)

I don't have Leopard... I guess I'm not understanding well your advice. Am I missing something? I mean, I have Tiger 10.4.11 and at this point NO limewire as LW5 will not work with Tiger and LW4 will not install.

Lord of the Rings January 30th, 2009 02:32 PM

Ask Stief, he might know your problem. :)

LW 4.16 runs fine on both my G4 with Tiger & Leopard intel. LW 5 runs on a different OSX installation on my intel.

You could always try LW 4.16 since I was unable to run 4.18, however was able to install it.

stief January 30th, 2009 04:18 PM

No idea why 4.18.8 won't install, unless the receipt in the hard drive's Library (not the Home folder's Library) wasn't deleted.

Still, delete the old installer(s) and download a fresh one from Lime Wire » Official Website & Free Download, BitTorrent «

I had the same problem.

When I tried to run LW 4.16, I got a message from the limewire site to upgrade and that the upgrade was for Tiger or Leopard, but no mention of needing Intel hardware.

I installed it only to have it tell me that it needed Java 1.6. So I removed it and tried to run my old LW 4.16, but then it said it would not run without Java 1.6. But java 1.6 is only for Leopard.

So I trashed every file I could find manually or by Searchlight search that contained Limewire.

Then I downloaded LW 4.18.8 from the older versions page on LW site.

But when I went to install it, it first said that I had a new version when I selected the location to install and it would install the older version over it. I said OK and then tried to do the install, but then it said there was nothing to install and would not go further.

But thanks to LordOfTheRings, I finally found the LW package in the Receipts folder of my Library folder and trashed that along with everything else related to LW. That did the trick after struggling with this all afternoon and finally finding this forum and this topic.

Thanks again

I did contact LW & they have quickly changed the download name for OSX specifying 'Leopard - Intel' now. (They haven't yet done this for Pro yet.)

Hello. I too am experiencing the same problem, except when I went to Library/receipts, I found nothing Limewire related.

Is there anything else I can do? I've deleted everything Limewire related and it still says "there is nothing to download".

I've tried restarting my computer and stuff but nothing works.

Lord of the Rings April 6th, 2009 06:50 PM

The file is called install limewire.pkg, not limewire. :) Arrange Receipts folder in 'List' mode & look under i. :) The folder is in OSX -> Library, not your account folder. :) So you're trying to install LW 4?

Confetti April 17th, 2009 05:22 PM

Lord, Had the same problem as the others. Your solution solved it. THANKS.
One only has to wonder though about the IDIOT webmasters at limewire. You contacted them 3 months ago, and STILL going to Limewire it says "Download for OSX" I did and they wasted an hour of my time dicking around with there bad code. 1. Website not specific. 2. Download does not check OS Version 3. Install does not check OS Version 4. Error messages talks about Java 1.6 and not OS Version. 5. NO uninstall. 6. After realizing wrong version, download and install 7. Installer says "Nothing to Install" 8. No Tech support. 9 Forced to register to get answer. and #10The Limewire CREW needs to get there heads out of the programming books and hire some actual USERS. Idiots. (But THANK YOU LORD!!!!)

Glad to hear you sorted your problem out. :)

I have the same problem as the above and have deleted all traces of limewire. I CANT FIND this magic receipt everyone is talking about. my receipts are already in alphabetical order and i have check 1000 times. I dont have limewire installed on bootcamp or another user and I have up to date java.

PLEASE help. Frostwire etc. are so much slower.

stief April 21st, 2009 03:37 PM

There are three Libraries on OS X.

Double-click the hard drive (not the home folder) to get the Library that contains the receipts folder. The file you need to delete is "Install LimeWire.pkg"

And, btw, LOTR has detailed examples of how to find the file, and Frostwire shouldn't run slower than LimeWire, since FW is based on the same code.
