TRouble with Acquisition, trying to re-install.

Hi, Stefan Kopec here in Australia, I hope I am in the right place. I purchase Acquisition some time ago (15months) it suddenly stopped working, I tried the latest upgrade but still to no avail. I was told by a colleague to uninstall it and re-install Acquisition, well do you think I can just re-install! no way. Does anyone know how to do this. I still have my e-mail with the activation code but can't do anything with it. Can anyone please help!!! I am lost.

Lord of the Rings November 1st, 2010 02:38 AM

You don't still have the Acquisition installer? I'm not sure how long Acquisition's support for their paid version lasts for. Your support may have finished which is why you can't access the paid version from the site any more.

What do you mean it just stopped working? Would not connect or would not open?

If you were unable to re-install, it may be due to the Acquisition receipt file. Try removing it from the Receipts folder. ie: main OSX Library -> Receipts, and I guess it will either be called Acquisition.pkg or Install Acquisition.pkg. After removing, try installing again. However this process is usually only needed if downgrading in version, not upgrading.

Hi Lord of the Rings, many thanks for your prompt reply. When I said that I can't re-install I meant to say that there is no way within the Acquisition page on the net that allows you to install without re-purchasing the whole package again. I have tried e-mailing their feedback address, but as always (have tried before) I never get a reply. When I first purchased FEb2009, I paid for a lifetime of upgrades, all was working until a couple of months ago and the suddenly I could not get any downloads at all. But I am in a pickle as to how to re-install without having to buy again. Somehow I kept the activate code e-mail but not the one with the route to take to where I put the code.

Lord of the Rings November 1st, 2010 03:09 AM

Looks like with the upgrade to Acquisition 2, new codes were needed. Have you tried redelivery of your activation code via entering your email address? Acquisition Activation Code Redelivery Tool

Their Release notes do not give dates which is not very helpful. You may need to obtain a new activation code. ;)

Sounds like a Scam, never heard of paid for liftime membership/upgrades with out get riped off... Stefan Kopec sorry to say it seems you got Scamed... If this so, try to get refound!

Stefan Kopec November 1st, 2010 04:37 AM

Hi Lord of the Rings, thanks for that but I was already on version 2.10, I did upgrade to 2.21 but it still would not work. I am trying to find someone who might know how I can get back in with my existing activate code, and as mentioned Acquisition do not reply to e-mails for some reason.

Stefan Kopec November 1st, 2010 05:38 AM

Hi Lord of the Rings, my son just mentioned that maybe the fact that Limewire is off air and Acquisition is limewire based maybe that is why we both can't get any downloads?? any views on that! Stefan Kopec

Lord of the Rings November 1st, 2010 08:12 AM

LW is working fine if we use the connection fixes. As far as the LW company being put on hold due to a court injunction, well the Acquisition developer gets a lot of his code from the LW code. So yes, he will probably be a little stuck for development unless he starts stealing code from FrostWire instead. :D

But in years past I heard a lot of complaints about the Acquisition Dev. Very arrogant. Does not acknowledge on his site the code he uses from LW. But it's been known for many years.

There are 3 packages that he sells at the site. One is lifetime, are you sure you chose that option?

Acquisition not connecting to network...

Hi everyone,
I am having the same exact problem with Acquisition! It started about a week ago & have tried connecting several times a day, every day since then. I even tried going to a friend's house & connecting via his WiFi, but to no avail... I'm also a paid user of Acquisition & still have my activation code, but it seems useless at this point?

Lord of the Rings November 2nd, 2010 08:48 PM

Have you tried the LimeWire Fix created by File_Girl71? :)
Have a look at Birdy's post http://www.gnutellaforums.com/connec...t-connect.html
Oh sorry File_Girl's fix is windows only presently though she's going to work on a Mac one. Use Birdy's advice lower down about replacing the Gnutella.net file. ;)

I'm not sure what's happening with Acquisition. Their site is still active. But perhaps the developer used the codes of LW after LW 5.5.10 which may mean problems of it running.

Stefan Kopec November 3rd, 2010 05:37 AM

Hi everyone, looks like Acquisition and Limewire are out, so I will try File girls suggestion of Frostwire, any positives or negatives here? any comments would be greatly welcome.

Re: Acquisition problems

Thanks Lord of the Rings...

File_Girl71 November 3rd, 2010 02:45 PM

Have you try this one called Acquisition Lite or as it's name is now Acqlite and it's free opensource software for Mac... Here is the link to it: http://acqlite.sourceforge.net/ Only thing i don't like about FrostWire is it comes bundled with extra stuff, and it set your home page to ask dot com with out ask your permission to do so!

Sleepless November 3rd, 2010 04:40 PM

Ask.com is so incredibly FAIL!! I typed Google into it on one PC and it actually had a text pop up saying the Ask.com was a good search engine as well, so why not use it? :lmao:

Lord of the Rings November 3rd, 2010 09:46 PM

I have tried a few versions of Acquisition Lite in years past. Never tried the Pro version.

File_Girl71 November 4th, 2010 02:06 PM

If people wanna use Adware bundel Ask fine for me...I don't so i have cleaned out the FrostWire version i use and no bundled stuff is in it...And a another thing is the devs of FrostWire follows the same mistake as LimeWire with Autoupdate for they last version 4.21.1! I never ever gona update from 4.20.9 to 4.21.1...

Stefan Kopec November 4th, 2010 05:17 PM

Hi File Girl,
Many thanks for ACQ lite, but it appears to have the same problem as Limewire / Acqusition....nothing downloads!! is it me or is anyone having these problems? As mentioned Limewire is out of action so anything that is Limewire based is most likely out of action as well. Any other programmes out there that are not? Any assistance would be most welcome.

My LW works fine, haven't you tried it yet? LW 5.5.10 for me works like a charm in Windows. :) Posts all over the LW forum sections about using LW 5.5.10 or earlier & how to set them up. ;)

Using LW 5.5.9 Pro on MacOSX 10.6, connected into turbo charged within 20 seconds, downloaded audio file in 80 seconds less than one minute ago just to verify. ;) Sounded great in iTunes too. :)

Lord of the Rings November 4th, 2010 06:00 PM

And File_Girl71 responds with this ... * NOTE: to connect with any LW program, you will need to either run File_Girl71's LimeWireOSX-FiX. Unzip it, run the program (LW must be closed when you run this program.) Need to enter your admin password to begin the process. This will allow you to connect whether using LW 5 or LW 4 :) OR see Birdy's http://www.gnutellaforums.com/connec...t-connect.html. (Many thank yous to File_Girl71 for her program fix to help the LW community!)

This will probably also work for ACQ lite but no guarantees since FG71's fix is specifically designed for LW. ;)

File_Girl71 November 5th, 2010 12:18 AM

It will not work on Acq or Acqlite yet.....But i could make one that will work on Acq or Acqlite most likely!
I know the reason Acq and now Acqlite does not connect, i'ts because it use LimeWire's WebCache...And LimeWire's WebCache is now shutdown...My LimeWire Fix tell LimeWire where to find the Ultrapeers to connect too! FrostWire did work independent of LimeWire and use there own WebCache and still working when LimeWire was shutdown! Acq and Acqlite devs must now consider use of FrostWires WebCache instead of LimeWires, but i consider to make connection fix for Acq and Acqlite users!

LW & ACQ problems...

It is confirmed that LW is done, do to court proceedings...
However, I would like to thank 'File_Girl71' , 'Lord of the Rings' , & 'Stefan Kopac' for all their help & useful information (and more importantly, the accuracy of the info they posted)!!! Good stuff people!
Using the advice/recommendation of another member (I apologize for forgetting who it was), I downloaded Frostwire and it's working great! Not as awesome as Acquisition was, but I'll deal!
Thanks again everyone and have a great weekend!

Thanks for the answer I've been looking for! Frostwire it is, gotta roll with the punches.:bangh:

Acq/LW Out, Frostwire In...

So everyone . . . now that we all know & have confirmed the cessation of Acquisition/Limewire, I'm sure you are asking yourself, "What program do I use now!?"...
I have started using Frostwire as a result of suggestions from others.
So far I have not encountered any problems or glitches, buuuuuuut . . . I must say, if like me, you have been spoiled for years using Acquisition & are used to successfully finding almost every music search you attempt (whether they be a rare artist/song/album), you are going to be somewhat disappointed with the results Frostwire produces :(
I'm assuming there aren't as many members/sharers on FW compared to LW/Acq?
If anyone has more suggestions on a replacement program for Limewire, please let me know! Frostwire will have to suffice for now, but hopefully I can find another program which is equally successful at finding rare searches like Acquisition WAS :bangh:

Lord of the Rings November 7th, 2010 08:39 PM

For rarer files, I use Phex for gnutella network.
Whilst LW is no longer being developed, versions up to 5.5.10 work fine.
.

File_Girl71 November 8th, 2010 01:51 AM

I do not know mutch about Acq/Acqlite P2P software...I assume they cannot connect to the Gnutella Network and there for do not give enny search result!!! I do not have Mac my self but i think it is possible to make a fix for Acq or Acqlite! So here we go where is the preferences folder to Acq on Mac? If Acq have that folder i need the full path and name of the folder before i can do somthing about it...Acq is build on the source code off LimeWire so i guess mutch will be the same for Acq as for LimeWire the way i see it!

I tried Acquisition trial & it would not connect at all including with added gnut.net file. It seemed to use both the LW prefs folder & a file of its own. OMG I HATE trialware !!!! Now I know why I did not follow with Acquisition with a program that's continually pushing you to 'pay' money, that caps your download speeds after 60 seconds. lol :D Even LW never resorted to that kind of trick. Now i know why the Acquisition developer was so unpopular in the Gnutella community. Well I do know other reasons, no need to publicise them.

I tried Acquilite & it immediately connected to 4 ultrapeers. All of them LW 5.5.8. All search results were junk spam though. Removing ultrapeers definitely helped. Making sure I had either FrostWire, LW 4 or earlier LW 5 ultrapeers connected to me.

Downloads were fine once I got passed the spam in search results. :)

Acquilite does not appear to use LW's prefs folder but a file of it's own. No idea what connection file it uses. It may be hidden, I will need to explore.
I've opened both of Acquisition & Acquilite separate pref files, they only seem to list the download & shared files & locations & program settings, etc.

Have Acqlite enny filters to filter out spam, like Word filter as LW had where you can filter out extension like wma, wmv, au etc...If not i am afaid it is usless for use on Gnutella Network!:D

Lord of the Rings November 8th, 2010 12:05 PM

It does have filters yes. :) Keyword filter is of course very important. I was purely using the program from scratch. There's also an ip blocklist option. The bult in spam filter is next to useless. Probably another learning filter based on LW's. But I have not explored the option yet.

BTW the person who designed the spam filter for LW joined Frostwire in it's early days but then took a several year break. Not sure where he is now. Torrents in LW variants was also his concept. He had his own version of LW that had a lot of new ideas in it. But that was 5-6 years ago. Well before LW ever added them. That was back in the days where a lot of LW's ideas came from users like him, experimenting with their own concepts & adding code to the official code & fixing bugs, etc.
