limmewire doesn't install on my Hard Drive . Exclamation point surrounded by a red circle

You cannot install on this volume(null)

Help please

thanks

Ah--you missed the sticky in the OS X section (the Mac forum is usually for OS ( and earlier questions).

Anyway, here's the link to the sticky http://www.gnutellaforums.com/showth...threadid=36374

The fix is pretty easy--just one file (receipt) to delete

Didn't that help?

megimp October 10th, 2005 12:13 AM

i tried downloading the java standalone - didn't need it
tried to download an earlier version and couldn't get to the page
tried to download again same problem

i'd rather download the version prior to the new one anyway

please help
thanks

stief October 10th, 2005 12:25 AM

We'd be glad to help, but not sure why you haven't deleted the receipt that's causing the problem.

The receipt is called ""Install LimeWire.pkg" and is a file in the main library of your hard drive:
Quote:

* NOTE: You get the "Null error" message in the Apple installer when a OS X thinks a more recent version is installed. Double-click the harddrive icon, open the Library, open the Receipts folder, then find the file: Install LimeWire.pkg, delete it and try again
Once you delete "Install LimeWire.pkg" you won't get the "null" message.

the above quote is taken from the sticky http://www.gnutellaforums.com/showth...threadid=36374 and contains more details on the null message, thanks to LOTR

installing latest jum version

stief October 10th, 2005 12:49 AM

jums are good, but the bouncing reveals a problem with your OS X java that should also be fixed. Sounds like you are using OS X 10.3.9

here's the link to the fix from Apple http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301380

installing the JAVA UPDATE

hi

where does the java update install?

it's there , terminal doesn't see it the limewire square opening logo shows but program won't open

stief October 10th, 2005 06:11 PM

whew--your situation is really odd. Sounds like your OS X really is messed up. What version are you using, and what machine? (forum rules list all the typical info needed to help troubleshoot).

Time for a safe boot at least (instructions are in the stickies or search).

Java is part of the System/Library, but Iwouldn't toch any of the files there ;)

hi again

more info needed:

Click on the desktop, Go to the Go menu, and choose "Utilities" (or just use command-shift-u )

Find "Console", and double-click

This will open a window that reports on what happens.

Try starting LimeWire again, and copy the lines that show up when LW freezes on the splash screen.

Just paste the lines here, or if they seem private, use the PM button at the bottom of this post and I'll see if I can find someone who can interpret them.

(btw--I'm also looking for a decent duplicate finder, so let me know if you found a good one)

gnutella has a 4.7 version that installs

a version of limewire 4.7 installs with the err.txt and dialog box error you know the applications/war msg

it prompt me to download the new version if 4.7 aka client 3.35 is invoked and i try to install 4.9.33 the installer for 4.9.33 turns into an Excel doc

stief October 15th, 2005 06:09 PM

I give up :D I really have no idea why your setup is so bizarre. Are you getting your LW installers from the official site at http://www.limewire.com/english/content/download.shtml

Well, this might be interesting: try this LW installer http://www.mager.org/LimeWire/LimeWire.html

Only A Hobo October 15th, 2005 06:46 PM

Megimp .. If your installer is turning into an Excell Document it is probable you are not downloading the installer with Safari. IE cannot download the installer correctly. I only noticed that in your last post.. I haven't been following the Saga closely!

Stief. I have a programme called Disk Inventory X from http://www.derlien.com/
No 1 son recomended it to me and I have yet to work out exactly what to do with it, but it may be what you are looking for ... then you can tell me what I can do with it :).. since every time I ask my son I forget to ask him:)

some of it

Your java is not working (google "buckyball")

Shut down, wait two minutes, restart, then as soon as you hear the startup tone, hold down the shift key. Once you see the grey spinning cog, you can let go.

This is called "Safe Boot mode" and will do a file system repair and check.

Then run Software Update from the Apple Menu.

Repeat until software update says you are up to date, and don't do anything else until complete.

Then run Disk Utility (in your Utilities folder), click on the hard drive icon in Disk Utilities list, and select Repair Permissions. Let it run and don't worry about a dozen or so messages printed there.

Do another safe boot

Do a regular restart

Delete all LimeWire folders, installers, and then go to http://www.mager.org/LimeWire/LimeWire.html and use the http link to download the LimeWire CVS build (4.9.32jum433) with Safari

Open the .dmg and follow the instructions.

It should work now.

[Hobo--that DIX program is rather neat, but not for removing duplicates. Thanks to your son for the link; sounds like an intereting developer]
